Validation Methods Research for Fault-Tolerant Avionics and Control Systems: Working Group Meeting, 2
The validation process comprises the activities required to insure the agreement of system realization with system specification. A preliminary validation methodology for fault tolerant systems documented. A general framework for a validation methodology is presented along with a set of specific tasks intended for the validation of two specimen system, SIFT and FTMP. Two major areas of research are identified. First, are those activities required to support the ongoing development of the validation process itself, and second, are those activities required to support the design, development, and understanding of fault tolerant systems
Mountain Meadow Response to Riparian Grazing Strategies in Western USA
The purpose of this grazing study was to examine the response of a mountain meadow riparian system to different levels of livestock use in late June. Six pastures were used to evaluate three levels of grazing. Over an 8-year period there was a general trend of increased plant species and biomass. The largest increases in species number occurred in pastures receiving the most grazing use. The opposite was true for plant biomass. Total plant cover decreased on all dry meadows, but increased on grazed streamside locations. Shrub cover, including streamside willows, increased under all grazing treatments. Streambank stability increased and stream width decreased in all pastures. Although changes were slow in this cold mountain valley, we concluded that these early season grazing regimes allowed development of increased biomass and cover of herbaceous and woody streamside vegetation and measureable improvements in some stream channel conditions
Cooperative program for design, fabrication, and testing of graphite/epoxy composite helicopter shafting
The fabrication of UH-1 helicopter tail rotor drive shafts from graphite/epoxy composite materials is discussed. Procedures for eliminating wrinkles caused by lack of precure compaction are described. The development of the adhesive bond between aluminum end couplings and the composite tube is analyzed. Performance tests to validate the superiority of the composite materials are reported
Patellar mechanics during simulated kneeling in the natural and implanted knee
AbstractKneeling is required during daily living for many patients after total knee replacement (TKR), yet many patients have reported that they cannot kneel due to pain, or avoid kneeling due to discomfort, which critically impacts quality of life and perceived success of the TKR procedure. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of component design on patellofemoral (PF) mechanics during a kneeling activity. A computational model to predict natural and implanted PF kinematics and bone strains after kneeling was developed and kinematics were validated with experimental cadaveric studies. PF joint kinematics and patellar bone strains were compared for implants with dome, medialized dome, and anatomic components. Due to the less conforming nature of the designs, change in sagittal plane tilt as a result of kneeling at 90° knee flexion was approximately twice as large for the medialized-dome and dome implants as the natural case or anatomic implant, which may result in additional stretching of the quadriceps. All implanted cases resulted in substantial increases in bone strains compared with the natural knee, but increased strains in different regions. The anatomic patella demonstrated increased strains inferiorly, while the dome and medialized dome showed increases centrally. An understanding of the effect of implant design on patellar mechanics during kneeling may ultimately provide guidance to component designs that reduces the likelihood of knee pain and patellar fracture during kneeling

Evidence for Reciprocal Interaction Effects Among Adults with Self-Injury and Their Caregivers
Patterns of caregiver responses to client adaptive behavior were compared between adults with intellectual disabilities with and without self-injurious behavior. Participants with moderate to profound intellectual disability and self-injury (n = 89) and age/IQ matched control participants (n = 20) were selected from a large sample of adults living in a regional residential center. Approximately 45 minutes of direct observation data were collected for each participant during unstructured leisure time. Data were sequentially analyzed and Yule’s Q scores derived and compared among groups. Results indicated that caregivers were more responsive to prosocial initiations and adaptive engagement among individuals with severe self-injurious behavior than to those with mild or no self-injurious behavior and that these responses were more likely to be in the form of a demand
Correlative analyses of RET and RAS mutations in a phase 3 trial of cabozantinib in patients with progressive, metastatic medullary thyroid cancer
BACKGROUND: Cabozantinib significantly prolonged progression-free survival (PFS) versus a placebo in patients with progressive, metastatic medullary thyroid cancer (MTC; P <.001). An exploratory analysis of phase 3 trial data evaluated the influence of rearranged during transfection (RET) and RAS (HRAS, KRAS, and NRAS) mutations on cabozantinib clinical activity. METHODS: Patients (n = 330) were randomized to cabozantinib (140 mg/day) or a placebo. The primary endpoint was PFS. Additional outcome measures included PFS, objective response rates (ORRs), and adverse events in RET and RAS mutation subgroups. RESULTS: Among all study patients, 51.2% were RET mutation–positive (38.2% with RET M918T), 34.8% were RET mutation–unknown, and 13.9% were RET mutation–negative. Sixteen patients were RAS mutation–positive. Cabozantinib appeared to prolong PFS versus the placebo in the RET mutation–positive subgroup (hazard ratio [HR], 0.23; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.14-0.38; P <.0001), the RET mutation–unknown subgroup (HR, 0.30; 95% CI, 0.16-0.57; P =.0001), and the RAS mutation–positive subgroup (HR, 0.15; 95% CI, 0.02-1.10; P =.0317). The RET M918T subgroup achieved the greatest observed PFS benefit from cabozantinib versus the placebo (HR, 0.15; 95% CI, 0.08-0.28; P <.0001). The ORRs for RET mutation–positive, RET mutation–negative, and RAS mutation–positive patients were 32%, 22%, and 31%, respectively. No PFS benefit was observed in patients lacking both RET and RAS mutations, although the ORR was 21%. The safety profile for all subgroups was similar to that for the overall cabozantinib arm. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that cabozantinib provides the greatest clinical benefit to patients with MTC who have RET M918T or RAS mutations. However, a prospective trial is needed to confirm the relation between genetic variation and the response to cabozantinib. Cancer 2016;122:3856–3864. © 2016 American Cancer Society
Evaluating a Sham-Controlled Sensory-Testing Protocol for Nonverbal Adults With Neurodevelopmental Disorders: Self-Injury and Gender Effects
Ambiguous or blunted responses to sensory and painful stimuli among individuals with severe intellectual disabilities and co-morbid communicative impairments put them at risk for having their experience of pain discounted and their expression of pain misinterpreted. Valid measurement procedures of behavioral expression are critical for this vulnerable group of individuals. We investigated a sham-controlled sensory testing protocol as an approach to guard against observer bias during non-verbal behavioral recording for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Participants were 44 (52% male) adults (mean age = 46, sd = 10) with moderate (14%) and severe to profound (86%) intellectual impairment. The facial behavior of the participants before, during, and after five sensory stimulation modalities (pin prick, light touch, deep pressure, cool, warm) was coded by three raters using the Facial Action Coding System (FACS). For each participant, their 5 active sensory trials were randomized with sham trials during which no stimulation was applied. Observers were blinded to active vs. sham stimulation status. FACS scores increased significantly during active sensory trials (p < 0.05) compared with sham trials. There were significant effects for gender with females more expressive than males (p < 0.05). There were also significant effects for the presence of self-injurious behavior (SIB) with individuals with SIB more expressive than individuals without SIB (p < 0.05). The results suggest that the procedure was valid (i.e., distinguished between active vs. sham sensory stimulation) and provides additional evidence that individuals with significant intellectual impairments are sensitive to tactile stimulation consistent with quantitative sensory testing protocols
Land Stewardship for the 21\u3csup\u3est\u3c/sup\u3e Century: Pasture and Livestock Management Workshop for Novices
Land ownership patterns in Texas and the southern USA are changing. Since 1994 (Wilkins et al., 2000) consumers interested primarily in recreational purposes have become the predominant owners of rural land. This land ownership change has created potential land stewardship problems associated with natural resource management. Few, if any, new landowners have any training related to the soil-plant-animal interface. New land owners need linkage with subject matter experts from land grant universities in a relaxed instructional setting while providing the opportunity for question and answer sessions. Thus, a programme was developed by a multi-disciplinary, multi-agency team at the Texas A&M University (TAMU) Agricultural Research & Extension Centre at Overton targeting novice landowners. The main goals in developing the programme were to a) provide basic information regarding management of soil-plant-animal resources that leads to sound, economic decisions and good land stewardship; and b) introduce the programme participants to the educational resources available to them through the land grant university system
