This thesis is structured as follows. After a first chapter of introduction, Chapter
2 exposes as simply as possible different notions that are going to be used in
the two first papers. First, we discuss the main steps required to build stochastic
integrals for semimartingales with space parameters. Secondly, we describe
the main results of risk neutral evaluation theory and, finally, we give a short
description of an optimization method known as duality.
Chapters 3 and 4 consider the problem of modelling illiquidity, which is covered
by two papers. The first one proposes a continuous time model for the
structure and the dynamic of the limit order book. The dynamic of a portfolio
for an investor using market orders is deduced and conditions to rule out arbitrage
are given. With the help of Itô’s generalized formula, it is also possible to
write the value of the portfolio as a stochastic differential equation. A complete
example of market model along with a calibration method is also given.
In the second paper, written in collaboration with Bruno RĂ©millard, we propose
a similar model with discrete time trading. We study the problem of derivatives
pricing and give explicit formulas for European option prices. Specific
conditions to rule out arbitrage are also provided. Using the dual optimization
method, we show that the price of European options can be written as the optimization
of an expectation over a set of probability measures.
Chapter 5 contained the third paper and studies a different topic. In this
paper, also written with Bruno RĂ©millard, we propose a forecasting method for
time series based on multivariate copulas. To provide a better understanding of
the proposed method, with the help of numerical experiments, we study the effect
of the strength and the structure of the different dependencies on predictions
performance. Since copulas allow to isolate the dependence structure and marginal
distributions, we study the impact of different marginal distributions on
predictions performance. Finally, we also study the effect of estimation errors on
the predictions. In all the cases, we compare the performance of predictions by using predictions based on a bivariate series and predictions based on a univariate
series, which allows to illustrate the advantage of the proposed method. For
practical matters, we provide a complete example of application on financial data
An optimization dichotomy for capital injections and absolutely continuous dividend strategies
We consider an optimal stochastic control problem in which a firm's
cash/surplus process is controlled by dividend payments and capital injections.
Stockholders aim to maximize their dividend stream minus the cost of injecting
capital, if needed. We consider absolutely continuous dividend policies subject
to a level-dependent upper bound on the dividend rate while we allow for
general capital injections behavior. We prove that the optimal strategy can
only be of two types: dividends are paid according to a \textit{mean-reverting}
strategy with capital injections performed each time the cash process reaches
zero; or, dividends are paid according to another \textit{mean-reverting}
strategy and no injection of capital is ever made, until ruin is reached. We
give a complete solution to this problem and characterize this dichotomy by
comparing (the derivatives of) the value functions at zero of two sub-problems.
The first sub-problem is concerned solely with the maximization of dividends,
while the second sub-problem is the corresponding bail-out optimal dividend
problem for which we provide also a complete solution
Abdominal obesity and its associated metabolic disturbances are associated with lower cardiorespiratory fitness as well as a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and heart failure. Obesity is frequently associated with abnormalities in cardiac structure and function that can be recognized by imaging in the asymptomatic phase of the cardiac involvement (e.g.: subclinical cardiac function) using advanced cardiac imaging. Both a low cardiorespiratory fitness and an abnormal subclinical cardiac function are independently associated with increased risk of heart failure and adverse outcomes. However, little is known about the relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness and subclinical cardiac function in adults characterized by abdominal obesity and without cardiovascular disease. This Master's degree project therefore aims at describing the associations between visceral adipose tissue, cardiorespiratory fitness and subclinical cardiac function among men and women with abdominal obesity who are free of cardiovascular disease. Body composition and fat distribution of participants (69 women and 23 men) were assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Cardiorespiratory fitness (VO₂[subscript max]) and subclinical cardiac function (global longitudinal strain) were measured using a maximal treadmill exercise test combined with ventilatory gas exchange analysis and speckle-tracking echocardiography imaging, respectively. Results show that compared to individuals with a higher cardiorespiratory fitness, those with a low cardiorespiratory fitness had greater abnormalities of subclinical cardiac function, more visceral adipose tissue accumulation, an adverse metabolic profile and engaged in less physical activity. This work highlights that a higher cardiorespiratory fitness may partially mitigate the subclinical cardiac dysfunction observed in individuals with excessive visceral fat accumulation
A profitable modification to global quadratic hedging
Recent research has shown that global quadratic hedging, also known as variance-optimal hedging and mean-variance hedging, can significantly reduce the risk of hedging call and put options with long-term maturities (one year or more), such as Long-Term Equity AnticiPation Securities (LEAPS). We propose a modification to global quadratic hedging that is more profitable on average to the hedger without substantially increasing his downside hedging risk, if at all. We prove mathematically that the expected terminal hedging gain of our modified strategy is greater than that of the global quadratic hedging strategy. The performance of our strategy is evaluated under simulated return paths from GARCH, regime-switching and jump-diffusion models, and under empirical S&P 500 return paths
