    Acupuncture for treatment of alcohol dependence - establishment of collaboration with St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust and Community Drug Service South London

    Alcohol dependence is an increasing social problem. In the UK, the NHS estimates that around 9% of men and 4% of women show signs of alcohol dependence. Acupuncture, as a treatment for addiction, can be integrated into a comprehensive programme to combat alcohol dependence. There have been research studies into the effectiveness of acupuncture to treat alcohol dependence and its related mental health disorders. However, although some findings are positive, they are still not sufficient or conclusive. Two questions need to be answered. The first is whether or not acupuncture is effective in treating alcohol addiction and its associated physiological and psychological symptoms, and the second is whether acupuncture is effective in preventing recidivism. We have established cooperation between our School, South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust and Community Drug Service South London (CDS). Since January 2015, some alcohol dependent clients have been given acupuncture, and their clinical records show that acupuncture may be effective in helping prevent recidivism. The hypothesis of this research is that acupuncture is effective in treating alcohol dependence by helping addicts quit alcohol drinking and maintain abstinence, and acupuncture has positive effects on symptoms of withdrawal and quality of life. This paper will present the aims and stages of this practical research and will demonstrate how we will measure the effect of treatment on the management of the clients’ addiction to alcohol

    Rapid, selective detection of biological analytes is necessary for early diagnosis, but is often complicated by the analytes being bound to proteins and the lack of fast and reliable systems available for their direct assessment. Here, a cheap, easily-assembled molecularly imprinted silica/graphene oxide hybrid is developed, which can selectively detect toxins linked to early-stage chronic kidney disease, down to femtomolar concentrations within 5 minutes.     The importance of particle dispersion in electrical treeing and breakdown in nano-filled epoxy resin

    The addition of nano-fillers has been widely proposed as a method to enhance the dielectric properties of high voltage polymeric insulation, though there are mixed reports in the literature. Here the potential of silica nano-particles to extend the time to failure specifically through resistance to electrical tree growth in epoxy resin is determined. The benefit of silane treating the nano-particles before compounding is clearly established with regard to slowing tree growth and subsequent time to failure. The growth of trees in needle-plane samples is measured in the laboratory with loadings of 1, 3 and 5 wt% nano-filler. In all cases the average times to failure are extended, but silane treatment of the nano-particles prior to compounding yields much superior results. The emergence of a pronounced inception time before tree growth is also noted for the higher-filled, silane-treated cases. The average time to failure of silane-treated 5 wt% filled material was 28 times that of the unfilled resin. The improvement in performance between the nanocomposites with untreated and treated fillers is attributed to fewer agglomerations and improved dispersion of the filler in the treated cases. Measurements of Partial Discharge (PD) indicated significant differences in PD patterns during the growth of trees in the treated and untreated cases. This distinction may provide a quality control method for monitoring materials. In particular, long periods in which PDs were not measured were observed in the silane-treated cases. Visual imaging of tree growth in the unfilled material allowed the changing nature of the tree from fine to tree to dark tree to be observed as it grew. Corresponding PD measurements suggest the dark tree is gradually becoming conductive, and that growth of maximum PD measured is dependent on the relative rates of the growth of the tree and its carbonization. X-ray computer tomography identified significant differences in average tree channel diameters (a reduction from 2.8 µm to 2.0 µm for 1 wt% and 3 wt% cases). This implies that in addition to tree length changes, evaporated tree volumes also change and may explain the change in partial discharge characteristics observed

    Structural Fluctuations in the Spin Liquid State of Tb2Ti2O7

    High resolution X-ray scattering measurements on single crystal Tb2Ti2O7 reveal finite structural correlations at low temperatures. This geometrically frustrated pyrochlore is known to exhibit a spin liquid, or cooperative paramagnetic state, at temperatures below ~ 20 K. Parametric studies of structural Bragg peaks appropriate to the Fd3ˉ\bar{3}m space group of Tb2Ti2O7 reveal substantial broadening and peak intensity reduction in the temperature regime 20 K to 300 mK. We also observe a small, anomalous lattice expansion on cooling below a density maximum at ~ 18 K. These measurements are consistent with the development of fluctuations above a cooperative Jahn-Teller, cubic-tetragonal phase transition at very low temperatures.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted for publicatio

    Magnetoelastics of a spin liquid: X-ray diffraction studies of Tb2Ti2O7 in pulsed magnetic fields

    We report high resolution single crystal x-ray diffraction measurements of the frustrated pyrochlore magnet Tb2Ti2O7, collected using a novel low temperature pulsed magnet system. This instrument allows characterization of structural degrees of freedom to temperatures as low as 4.4 K, and in applied magnetic fields as large as 30 Tesla. We show that Tb2Ti2O7 manifests intriguing structural effects under the application of magnetic fields, including strongly anisotropic giant magnetostriction, a restoration of perfect pyrochlore symmetry in low magnetic fields, and ultimately a structural phase transition in high magnetic fields. It is suggested that the magnetoelastic coupling thus revealed plays a significant role in the spin liquid physics of Tb2Ti2O7 at low temperatures.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted for publicatio

    Should Any Workplace Be Exempt from Smoke-Free Law: The Irish Experience

    Background. In 2004, the Irish Government introduced national legislation banning smoking in workplaces; with exemptions for “a place of residence”. This paper summarises three Irish studies of exempted premises; prisons, psychiatric hospitals and nursing homes. Methods. PM2.5 and nicotine were measured in nursing homes and psychiatric hospitals, in addition to ultrafine particles in the hospitals. In the prisons, officers (n = 30) completed exhaled breath Carbon Monoxide (CO) measurements. Questionnaires determined officers' opinion on introducing smoking prohibitions in prisons. Nursing home smoking policies were examined and questionnaires completed by staff regarding workplace secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure. Findings. Ultrafine particle concentrations in psychiatric hospitals averaged 130,000  cm3, approximately 45% higher than Dublin pub (35.5 μg/m3) pre ban. PM2.5 levels in psychiatric hospitals (39.5 μg/m3) were similar to Dublin pubs (35.5 μg/m3) pre ban. In nursing homes permitting smoking, similar PM2.5 levels (33 μg/m3) were measured, with nicotine levels (0.57 μg/m3) four times higher than “non-smoking” nursing homes (0.13 μg/m3). In prisons, 44% of non-smoking officers exhibited exhaled breath CO criteria for light to heavy smokers. Conclusions. With SHS exposure levels in some exempted workplaces similar to Dublin pubs levels pre ban, policies ensuring full protection must be developed and implemented as a right for workers, inmates and patients
