Deathscapes of Settler Colonialism : The necro-settlement of Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada

The Accepted Manuscript is under embargo until 23 January 2019.This article considers the influence of burials and memorials to colonial soldiers from an earlier era on contemporary social and cultural landscapes in Canada. Through the example of a landscape centered on Smith’s Knoll, a burial ground for war dead from the British-American War of 1812, it explores the process of necro-settlement: the strengthening of settler colonial claims to land based on the development of complex, meaningladen landscapes of dead and memory. This article consists of three parts: The first situates geographical studies of deathscapes alongside theories about settler colonialism through intersecting discourses of land use. The second includes a settler colonial microhistorical geography of Smith’s Knoll and the local deathscape that surrounds it. The third section draws on this case study to reveal new perspectives on the role of burial and memorial in settler colonial place-making and the erasure of Indigenous histories and peoples.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

S-adenosylmethionine (SAM-e) for the treatment of depression in people living with HIV/AIDS

BACKGROUND: This study reports on clinical data from an 8-week open-label study of 20 HIV-seropositive individuals, diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (DSM-IV), who were treated with SAM-e (S-Adenosylmethionine). SAM-e may be a treatment alternative for the management of depression in a population reluctant to add another "pill" or another set of related side effects to an already complex highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) regimen. METHODS: The Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were used to assess depressive symptomatology from 1,2,4,6 and 8 weeks after initiation of treatment with SAM-e. RESULTS: Data show a significant acute reduction in depressive symptomatology, as measured by both the HAM-D and the BDI instruments. CONCLUSIONS: SAM-e has a rapid effect evident as soon as week 1 (p < .001), with progressive decreases in depression symptom rating scores throughout the 8 week study

Urban consolidation and the inadequacy of local open space provision in Sydney

This article analyses the recent provision of local open space in urban consolidation developments in Sydney. In particular, it looks at the extent to which local open space areas required to meet new residents' needs under the NSW Environmental Planning and Assessment Act are not being provided in such developments, and the reasons for this. Under-provision is shown to be greatest in existing higher density areas where the state government has targeted significantly increased urban consolidation. Reasons for under-provision include reluctance to pass on the cost to developers of funding the required open space given existing housing market prices, local council plans allowing developers' contributions to be diverted to embellishing existing open space, and the lack of local government revenue to maintain new open space. The result is intensified pressure on existing open space
