Diverticular disease of the colon is a disease that gradually increases in frequency, which is why we have conducted a study to determine the incidence in the Hospital Teodoro Maldonado Carbo, based on the results obtained in the barium enema Colon (EBC), which performed in 100 patients over 40 years. It was found that 48% of patients enrolled in or beyond the fourth decade of life suffer from diverticulum in the colon. The age group most commonly performed in the EBC was in the sixth decade of life, the latter being the most affected by this disease by 66% and 67% eighth decade. Diverticulum were observed during this study were acquired and the sigmoid colon segment is its location the most common. From what I can conclude is that although colon diverticulum is a disease of developed countries, poor eating habits, Ecuador presents similar incidents and this grows with increasing longevity of populations and one of the factors responsible for the intake low in fiber has been replaced by foods that are placed on top of the food pyramid. We recommend a change in dietary habits as well as prevalence increases, the risks grow.

Lupus erythematosus: systemic autoimmune and organ specific disease. The immune system of patients with Lupus becomes activated and reacts against themselves, which is why it is considered an autoimmune disease. In the USA more than one million people have Lupus. The symptoms appear in a variety of forms, and half of the cases are lethal. The damage may appears in any organ of the body and can cause arthritis with inflammation, fatigue, facial o malar rash, oral ulcers, photosensitivity, serositis (inflammation of tissue around the lung and heart), renal disorders (proteinuria, cellular destruction), blood disorders (leukopenia, lymphopenia, thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia), immunological disorders (anti-DNA, anti-Sm antibodies), and abnormal antinuclear antibody titles. Using molecular biology techniques some factors that regulate the immune system and biochemistry mechanisms of tissues damage in lupus have been discovered. In addition some genes that appear to be involved in the generation of lupus have been identified.

Purpose: To perform serum microRNA expression profiling to identify members of chromosome 19 miRNA cluster involved in preeclampsia development. Methods: Serum chromosome 19 miRNA cluster microRNA expression profiling was evaluated at 12, 16, and 20 gestational weeks and at the time of preeclampsia diagnosis, in women who developed preeclampsia (WWD-PE; n = 16) and controls (n = 18) using TaqMan low density array plates. Results: A total of 51 chromosome 19 microRNA cluster members were evaluated. The circulating hsa-miRs 512-3p, 518f3p, 520c-3p, and 520d-3p, were differentially expressed between groups (P < 0.05). Compared with controls, serum levels of hsa-miR-518f-3p at 20 GW were useful for identifying WWD-Mild-PE (P = 0.035) and WWD-Severe-PE(P = 0.007). Conclusions: Serum hsa-miRs 512-3p, 518f-3p, 520c-3p, and 520d-3p, are differentially expressed between WWD-PE and controls and their role in the development of preeclampsia should be investigated further

    Definiteness across languages

Definiteness has been a central topic in theoretical semantics since its modern foundation. However, despite its significance, there has been surprisingly scarce research on its cross-linguistic expression. With the purpose of contributing to filling this gap, the present volume gathers thirteen studies exploiting insights from formal semantics and syntax, typological and language specific studies, and, crucially, semantic fieldwork and cross-linguistic semantics, in order to address the expression and interpretation of definiteness in a diverse group of languages, most of them understudied. The papers presented in this volume aim to establish a dialogue between theory and data in order to answer the following questions: What formal strategies do natural languages employ to encode definiteness? What are the possible meanings associated to this notion across languages? Are there different types of definite reference? Which other functions (besides marking definite reference) are associated with definite descriptions? Each of the papers contained in this volume addresses at least one of these questions and, in doing so, they aim to enrich our understanding of definiteness
