    An Economic Approach to Size of a Renewable Energy Mix in Small Islands

    The importance of renewable energy exploitation reduces the energy dependence on fossil fuels. Despite technological progress, in several remote areas and small islands the energy production is nowadays dominated by the utilization of fossil fuels. With new, increasingly stringent laws on polluting emissions and the need to lower production costs, it is necessary to exploit as many renewable sources as possible. In order to implement these considerations, it was decided to study renewable energy production. The study was carried out by estimating the energy production on a monthly and annual basis considering a mix of three plants, namely marine, solar, and wind. Simulations on wave production were carried out on a new device developed by the research team at the University of Palermo. In order to be able to perform these simulations, input climate data are required. These data are normally available in literature or obtainable by using specific GIS tools. As criterium, the Levelized Cost of Energy, normally applied to a single technology, is extended to the entire energy mix. Minimizing this parameter, the best solution is individuated, and capable of supplying 50% of the summer electrical load with renewable energy sources. The results carried out from a case study based in aeolian islands show that the solar production reaches 10.2%, the wind production reaches 45.47% and sea wave production reaches 3.04%. In this way, the diesel production decreases to 41.29%. This method can be easily applied for several small islands, estimating for several sites the ability to reduce the energy production from fossil fuels

    Bacterial strains responsible for antibiotic resistant infections are increasing in an alarming way and the evolution of resistance mechanisms seems to be unstoppable. In the past decade, many efforts have been made in order to counteract this phenomenon but very few compounds have reached clinical trials. The development of new classes of antibiotics able to overcome the main bacterial drug resistance mechanisms is urgently required to counter the imminent danger of a postantibiotic era

    In questo articolo presenteremo e discuteremo della catalogazione e restauro e di alcuni strumenti scientifici di particolare interesse storico-didattico appartenenti alla Collezione Storica degli Strumenti di Fisica dell’Università di Palermo. La catalogazione è stata effettuata secondo le indicazioni fornite dell’Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo e la Documentazione, per mezzo della scheda per il patrimonio scientifico-tecnologico. Nell’articolo saranno discussi gli aspetti tecnici degli interventi di restauro effettuati e saranno indicate le linee guida generali per il proseguimento dell’attività avviata.The article deals with the cataloguing and restoration of some scientific instruments of particular historical and didactic interest belonging to the Historical Collection of the Physics Instruments of the University of Palermo. The restoration activities have been carried out side by side the cataloguing, which has been done following the instructions supplied by the Central Institute for Cataloguing and Documentation with the official form for the scientific and technological heritage. In the article, we will discuss the technical aspects of the work carried out and basic guidelines will be given for the continuation of the activity

    Towards an open database of assessment material for STEM subjects: requirements and recommendations from early field trials

    If appropriately implemented, open databases of instruction material may help teaching and learning by providing content for teaching activities, scaffolding, and self-assessment. The paper presents the current results of the development and implementation of a database that is expressly built for promoting exchange of questions and exercises, together with the associated solutions among teachers for STEM subjects. Besides presenting and motivating the initiative (together with reporting its current status), the manuscript lists a series of lessons that have been learned while executing the project - including the need for proper management of authorship and version control of the uploaded material. Moreover, the manuscript describes which features any open database of instruction material should implement to aid improved usability, together with a series of nontrivial theoretical and practical problems for future scientific investigations (e.g., developing taxonomies for indexing the difficulty levels of the instruction material uploaded in the database that do not suffer from the subjective interpretability associated with the existing taxonomies)

    A Win-Win Scheme for Improving the Environmental Sustainability of University Commuters’ Mobility and Getting Environmental Credits

    European Union Member States are called upon to meet internationally proposed environmental goals. This study is based, in particular, on the recommendation of the European Union (EU), which encourages Member States to pursue effective policies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions, including through appropriate changes in the behavioral habits of citizens. In this respect, among the main sectors involved, transport and mobility should certainly be mentioned. National institutions should be adequately involved in order to achieve the objectives set; in this regard, universities must certainly be considered for their educational value. These latter, for instance, could commit to improving the environmental performance of the mobility of their commuter students (to a not insignificant extent), since commuting modes are often the cause of high CO2 emissions; indeed, they still largely involve the use of internal combustion engines based on fossil fuels. In this paper, the effectiveness of a smartphone-app-based method to encourage commuter students to adopt more sustainable transport modes is evaluated. In more detail, starting from a statistical analysis of the status quo of mobility habits of a sample of students at the University of Palermo (Italy), an improvement of current habits toward a more sustainable path is encouraged through a new application (specifically created for this purpose) installed on students’ smartphones. Then, the daily and annual distances traveled by commuters with the new mobility modes are calculated, and the resulting savings in energy and CO2 emissions are estimated. Finally, it is proposed that the reduced emissions could be converted into energy-efficiency credits that the University could use to enter the emission trading system (ETS), here contextualized within the Italian “TEE” (“Energy Efficiency Credits”) scheme, while the benefits for students participating in the program could consist of reduced fees and free access to university services. The results obtained show the feasibility of the proposal. This approach can be considered a useful model that could be adopted by any other public institutions—not only universities—to facilitate their path toward decarbonization

    Disposal of green roofs: A contribution to identifying an “Allowed by legislation” end–of–life scenario and facilitating their environmental analysis

    The rapid and widespread deployment of green roofs requires the need to address their disposal and to assess the environmental impact of this phase of their life cycle to understand whether their current large-scale application may pose a problem. A review of the literature on green roofs environmental performance (particularly Life Cycle Assessment studies) has highlighted the lack of a standardized, commonly adopted, procedure for determining the treatments, recovery and/or disposal, to be assigned to waste from the removal of green roofs. In this regard, it should be mentioned that there is a lack of ad hoc legislation on the disposal of this technology (to the best of the authors’ knowledge, even at the international level). In this paper, an attempt procedure is introduced to identify the end-of-life scenario of green roofs that does not conflict with the current regulations regarding wastes. Specifically, the procedure relies on an “attempt classification” of the waste from individual green roof elements and the priority criterion for intervention. This procedure might thus be used temporarily by technicians, pending the issuance of guidelines specifically dedicated to green roofs disposal, to model their end-of-life and thus assess the environmental impact of this phase of the life cycle. The feasibility of this proposal was verified through a field application. Besides the methodological proposal, the results of the work indicated the need to review the current waste legislation and update it -at least the Italian one - to also consider new materials used in green transition technologies

    Client Oriented Scale of Improvement in First-Time and Experienced Hearing Aid Users: An Analysis of Five Predetermined Predictability Categories through Audiometric and Speech Testing

    Objectives: The aim of our investigation was to explore the relationship between unaided pure-tone and speech audiometry and self-reported aided performance measured according to five predetermined COSI categories among first-time hearing aid users and experienced hearing aid users. Methods: Data from 286 patients were retrospectively evaluated. We divided the sample into first-time hearing aid users (G1) and experienced hearing aid users (G2). The correlation between unaided tonal and speech audiometry and five preliminary selected client-oriented scale of improvement (COSI) categories was studied. Results: A greater percentage of hearing aid users aged >80 years and a higher prevalence of severe-to-profound hearing loss in G2 group were observed (p < 0.05). For the total cohort, a mean hearing threshold of 60.37 ± 18.77 db HL emerged in the right ear, and 59.97 ± 18.76 db HL was detected in the left ear (p > 0.05). A significant statistical difference was observed in the group of first-time hearing aid users for the “Television/Radio at normal volume” item, where patients with a lower speech intellection threshold (SIT) were associated with higher COSI scores (p = 0.019). Studying the relationship between the speech reception threshold (SRT) and the COSI item “conversation with 1 or 2 in noise” evidenced worse speech audiometry in patients who scored ≤2 among experienced hearing aid users (p = 0.00012); a higher mean 4–8 kHz frequencies threshold for the better ear was found within the G2 group among those who scored ≤2 in the COSI item “conversation with 1 or 2 in quiet” (p = 0.043). Conclusions: Our study confirms a poor correlation between unaided tonal and speech audiometry and self-reported patient assessment. Although we included only five COSI categories in this study, it is clear that unaided audiometric tests may drive the choice of proper hearing rehabilitation, but their value in predicting the benefit of hearing aids remains limited

    Alcohol abuse and insomnia disorder: Focus on a group of night and day workers

    The sleep-wake cycle plays a fundamental role in maintaining the physiological balance of our body. Its alteration favours the genesis of several organic alterations and diseases including sleep disorders and the consumption of several substances of abuse. It has been reported that the work activity, especially that carried out during the night, is able to influence the sleep-wake cycle, promoting the development of insomnia, which, in turn, would subject the worker to a stressful condition such as to encourage adverse behaviour such as the use/abuse of psychotropic substances. Based on the above premises, the aim of our research was to evaluate, in night workers: (i) the pattern of consumption of alcoholic beverages; (ii) the presence of insomnia; and (iii) the possible correlation between alcohol consumption and insomnia disorder. We used the AUDIT-C test (the abbreviated version of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test) and the Insomnia Severity Index to assess alcohol consumption and insomnia disorder, respectively. All questionnaires were completed by workers of both sexes belonging to different types of work activities, exclusively day or night. The results of our research show a higher propensity of night workers to consume alcoholic beverages than those who work during daytime hours, often in binge-drinking mode. In addition, an increase in the amount of alcohol consumed was found to be related to insomnia disorder, especially in night workers. This study provides further awareness of the importance of the negative impact of alcohol consumption on sleep quality in night workers

    Improving Power Delivery of Grid-Connected Induction Machine Based Wind Generators under Dynamic Conditions Using Feedforward Linear Neural Networks

    In the conventional grid-connected Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS), the generator side inverter is typically controlled via Field Oriented Control (FOC), while Voltage Oriented Control (VOC) controls the grid side inverter. However, robust operation cannot be guaranteed during sudden changes in wind speeds and weak grid connections. This paper presents a novel method to improve the overall dynamic performance of on-grid induction machine-based wind generators. An online mechanical parameter estimation technique is devised using Recursive Least Squares (RLS) to compute the machine inertia and friction coefficient iteratively. An adaptive feedforward neural (AFN) controller is also proposed in the synchronous reference frame, which is constructed using the estimated parameters and the system's inverse. The output of the neural controller is added to the output of the speed PI controller in the outer loop of the FOC to enhance the speed response of the wind generator. A similar approach is taken to improve the classical VOC structure for the grid-side inverter. In this case, the RLS estimates the equivalent Thevenin's grid impedance in real-time. As for the adaptive action, two identical neural networks are integrated with the inner loop direct and quadrature axis current PI controllers. Under nominal operating conditions, it is observed that the PI+AFN provides a faster settling time for the generator's speed and torque response. Upon being subjected to variations in the wind speed, the PI+AFN outperforms the classical PI controller and attains a lower integral-time error. In addition, the proposed PI+AFN controller has a better ability to maintain the grid-side inverter stability during stochastic variations in grid impedance. One significant advantage of the proposed control approach is that no data for training or validation is required since the neural network weights are directly the output of the RLS estimator. Hardware verification for the improved FOC for wind generators using the adaptive controller is also made using the DSPACE 1007 AUTOBOX platform
