A model for enhanced and selective transport through biological membranes with alternating pores
We investigate the outflux of ions through the channels in a cell membrane.
The channels undergo an open/close cycle according to a periodic schedule. Our
study is based both on theoretical considerations relying on homogenization
theory, and on Monte Carlo numerical simulations. We examine the onset of a
limiting boundary behavior characterized by a constant ratio between the
outflux and the local density, in the thermodynamics limit. The focus here is
on the issue of selectivity, that is on the different behavior of the ion
currents through the channel in the cases of the selected and non-selected
species.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1307.418
Relaxation Height in Energy Landscapes: an Application to Multiple Metastable States
The study of systems with multiple (not necessarily degenerate) metastable
states presents subtle difficulties from the mathematical point of view related
to the variational problem that has to be solved in these cases. We introduce
the notion of relaxation height in a general energy landscape and we prove
sufficient conditions which are valid even in presence of multiple metastable
states. We show how these results can be used to approach the problem of
multiple metastable states via the use of the modern theories of metastability.
We finally apply these general results to the Blume--Capel model for a
particular choice of the parameters ensuring the existence of two multiple, and
not degenerate in energy, metastable states
Coupling of Josephson flux-flow oscillators to an external RC load
We investigate by numerical simulations the behavior of the power dissipated
in a resistive load capacitively coupled to a Josephson flux flow oscillator
and compare the results to those obtained for a d.c. coupled purely resistive
load. Assuming realistic values for the parameters R and C, both in the high-
and in the low-Tc case the power is large enough to allow the operation of such
a device in applications.Comment: uuencoded, gzipped tar archive containing 11 pages of REVTeX text + 4

Lunar Exploration Architecture Level Key Drivers and Sensitivities
Strategic level analysis of the integrated behavior of lunar transportation and lunar surface systems architecture options is performed to assess the benefit, viability, affordability, and robustness of system design choices. This analysis employs both deterministic and probabilistic modeling techniques so that the extent of potential future uncertainties associated with each option are properly characterized. The results of these analyses are summarized in a predefined set of high-level Figures of Merit (FOMs) so as to provide senior NASA Constellation Program (CxP) and Exploration Systems Mission Directorate (ESMD) management with pertinent information to better inform strategic level decision making. The strategic level exploration architecture model is designed to perform analysis at as high a level as possible but still capture those details that have major impacts on system performance. The strategic analysis methodology focuses on integrated performance, affordability, and risk analysis, and captures the linkages and feedbacks between these three areas. Each of these results leads into the determination of the high-level FOMs. This strategic level analysis methodology has been previously applied to Space Shuttle and International Space Station assessments and is now being applied to the development of the Constellation Program point-of-departure lunar architecture. This paper provides an overview of the strategic analysis methodology and the lunar exploration architecture analyses to date. In studying these analysis results, the strategic analysis team has identified and characterized key drivers affecting the integrated architecture behavior. These key drivers include inclusion of a cargo lander, mission rate, mission location, fixed-versus- variable costs/return on investment, and the requirement for probabilistic analysis. Results of sensitivity analysis performed on lunar exploration architecture scenarios are also presented
-kinks in strongly ac driven sine-Gordon systems
We demonstrate that -kinks exist in non-parametrically ac driven
sine-Gordon systems if the ac drive is sufficiently fast. It is found that, at
a critical value of the drive amplitude, there are two stable and two unstable
equilibria in the sine-Gordon phase. The pairwise symmetry of these equilibria
implies the existence of a one-parameter family of -kink solutions in the
reduced system. In the dissipative case of the ac driven sine-Gordon systems,
corresponding to Josephson junctions, the velocity is selected by the balance
between the perturbations. The results are derived from a perturbation analysis
and verified by direct numerical simulations.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, revte
MIRU-VNTR genotyping of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains using QIAxcel technology: a multicentre evaluation study
Molecular genotyping of M.tuberculosis is an important laboratory tool in the context of emerging drug resistant TB. The standard 24-loci MIRU-VNTR typing includes PCR amplification followed by the detection and sizing of PCR fragments using capillary electrophoresis on automated sequencers or using agarose gels. The QIAxcel Advanced system might offer a cost-effective medium-throughput alternative.Performance characteristics of the QIAxcel Advanced platform for the standard 24 VNTR loci panel was evaluated at two centres on a total of 140 DNA specimens using automated capillary electrophoresis as a reference method. Additionally 4 hypervariable MIRU-VNTR loci were evaluated on 53 crude DNA extracts. The sizing accuracy, interlaboratory reproducibility and overall instrument's performance were assessed during the study. An overall concordance with the reference method was high reaching 98.5% and 97.6% for diluted genomic and crude DNA extracts respectively. 91.4% of all discrepancies were observed in fragments longer than 700bp. The concordance for hypervariable loci was lower except for locus 4120 (96.2%). The interlaboratory reproducibility agreement rates were 98.9% and 91.3% for standard and hypervariable loci, respectively. Overall performance of the QIAxcel platform for M.tuberculosis genotyping using a panel of standard loci is comparable to that of established methods for PCR fragments up to 700bp. Inaccuracies in sizing of longer fragments could be resolved through using in-house size markers or introduction of offset values. To conclude, the QiaXcel system could be considered an effective alternative to existing methods in smaller reference and regional laboratories offering good performance and shorter turnaround times
Evidence for a first order transition in a plaquette 3d Ising-like action
We investigate a 3d Ising action which corresponds to a a class of models
defined by Savvidy and Wegner, originally intended as discrete versions of
string theories on cubic lattices. These models have vanishing bare surface
tension and the couplings are tuned in such a way that the action depends only
on the angles of the discrete surface, i.e. on the way the surface is embedded
in . Hence the name gonihedric by which they are known. We show that
the model displays a rather clear first order phase transition in the limit
where self-avoidance is neglected and the action becomes a plaquette one. This
transition persists for small values of the self avoidance coupling, but it
turns to second order when this latter parameter is further increased. These
results exclude the use of this type of action as models of gonihedric random
surfaces, at least in the limit where self avoidance is neglected.Comment: 4 pages Latex text, 4 postscript figure
Novel glassy behavior in a ferromagnetic p-spin model
Recent work has suggested the existence of glassy behavior in a ferromagnetic
model with a four-spin interaction. Motivated by these findings, we have
studied the dynamics of this model using Monte Carlo simulations with
particular attention being paid to two-time quantities. We find that the system
shares many features in common with glass forming liquids. In particular, the
model exhibits: (i) a very long-lived metastable state, (ii) autocorrelation
functions that show stretched exponential relaxation, (iii) a non-equilibrium
timescale that appears to diverge at a well defined temperature, and (iv) low
temperature aging behaviour characteristic of glasses.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
