On the definition of temperature in FPU systems
It is usually assumed, in classical statistical mechanics, that the
temperature should coincide, apart from a suitable constant factor, with the
mean kinetic energy of the particles. We show that this is not the case for
\FPU systems, in conditions in which energy equipartition between the modes is
not attained. We find that the temperature should be rather identified with the
mean value of the energy of the low frequency modes.Comment: 12 pages, 4 Figure
Biodisponibilidade de Arsênio em Dois Solos de Granulometrias Distintas sob Adição de Fosfato e Arsenato.
Differences in gene expression profiles of seven target proteins in third-stage larvae of anisakis simplex (Sensu stricto) by sites of infection in blue whiting (micromesistius poutassou)
The third-stage larvae of the parasitic nematode genus Anisakis tend to encapsulate in different tissues including the musculature of fish. Host tissue penetration and degradation involve both mechanic processes and the production of proteins encoded by an array of genes. Investigating larval gene profiles during the fish infection has relevance in understanding biological traits in the parasite’s adaptive ability to cope with the fish hosts’ defense responses. The present study aimed to investigate the gene expression levels of some proteins in L3 of A. simplex (s.s.) infecting different tissues of blue whiting Micromesistius poutassou, a common fish host of the parasite in the NE Atlantic. The following genes encoding for Anisakis spp. proteins were studied: Kunitz-type trypsin inhibitor (TI), hemoglobin (hb), glycoprotein (GP), trehalase (treh), zinc metallopeptidase 13 (nas 13), ubiquitin-protein ligase (hyd) and sideroflexin 2 (sfxn 2). Significant differences in gene transcripts (by quantitative real-time PCR, qPCR) were observed in larvae located in various tissues of the fish host, with respect to the control. ANOVA analysis showed that relative gene expression levels of the seven target genes in the larvae are linked to the infection site in the fish host. Genes encoding some of the target proteins seem to be involved in the host tissue migration and survival of the parasite in the hostile target tissues of the fish host
Long-term investigation of the ‘soft flesh’ condition in Northeast Atlantic mackerel induced by the myxosporean parasite Kudoa thyrsites (Cnidaria, Myxozoa). Temporal trends and new molecular epidemiological observations
Northeast Atlantic (NEA) mackerel (Scomber scombrus, Scombridae) represents an economically important target for the Norwegian pelagic fishing industry. Despite the commercial significance of NEA mackerel, little is known about the infections with the myxosporean parasite Kudoa thyrsites (Kudoidae). The parasite may cause post-mortem myoliquefaction of the fish skeletal muscle and therefore reduce the quality of the fish product. In this study, we examined 'soft flesh' occurrence in commercial size groups of NEA 'autumn mackerel' caught between 2007 and 2020, and investigated the prevalence and density of K. thyrsites (qPCR) and how they related to the occurrence of 'soft flesh'. The present study is the first long-term investigation of the occurrence of K. thyrsites-induced 'soft flesh' in NEA mackerel. After appearing stable for over a decade, the 'soft flesh' occurrence increased three-to six-fold in 2019 and 2020. This increase, together with the findings that 'soft flesh' seems primarily to affect the commercially most valuable mackerel size group (>400 g), may have important implications for the fishing industry and the fishery management. Molecular analysis (qPCR) suggests that the prevalence of K. thyrsites is substantially higher than 'soft flesh' occurrence. The majority (87.4%, n = 76/87) of infected mackerel did not develop 'soft flesh' and only individuals with high parasite density in the musculature (12.6%, n = 11/87) showed the condition. Therefore, qPCR analyses should be used for estimating the prevalence of K. thyrsites in fish. The method may also be used to assess the risk of NEA mackerel to develop post-mortem 'soft flesh'
From non-symmetric particle systems to non-linear PDEs on fractals
We present new results and challenges in obtaining hydrodynamic limits for
non-symmetric (weakly asymmetric) particle systems (exclusion processes on
pre-fractal graphs) converging to a non-linear heat equation. We discuss a
joint density-current law of large numbers and a corresponding large deviations
principle.Comment: v2: 10 pages, 1 figure. To appear in the proceedings for the 2016

Building a Prediction Model for Vacuum-Assisted Operative Vaginal Delivery Risk
Aim: The objective of this study was to evaluate the risk factors
for operative vaginal delivery and to propose a new nomogram
for predicting the risk. Methods: We retrospectively
analyzed the data of 1,955 pregnancies that occurred in
our clinic between the years 2007 and 2008. Included were
singleton pregnancies with labor diagnosis after the 36th
gestational week in which spontaneous or operative vaginal
deliveries occurred. In this study, the operative delivery was
carried out exclusively by vacuum extraction. Results: After
univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression stepwise
model selection, maternal age, nulliparity, medically assisted
procreation, gestational age at birth, male fetus, epidural
analgesia and medical induction of labor were found
to be the most predictive variables for operative vaginal delivery.
Considering these factors we propose a new nomogram
for an objectified determination of the risk of operative
vaginal delivery. Conclusions: The new nomogram we propose
could be an important tool for an objectified determination
of the risk of operative vaginal delivery by vacuum
extraction in individualized patient counseling
High H2O content in Pyroxenes of residual mantle Peridotites at a Mid Atlantic ridge segment
Global correlations of mid-ocean-ridges basalt chemistry, axial depth and crustal thickness have been ascribed to mantle temperature variations affecting degree of melting. However, mantle H2O content and elemental composition may also play a role. How H2O is distributed in the oceanic upper mantle remains poorly constrained. We tackled this problem by determining the H2O content of orthopyroxenes (opx) and clinopyroxenes (cpx) of peridotites from a continuous lithospheric section created during 26 Ma at a 11°N Mid-Atlantic Ridge segment, and exposed along the Vema Transform. The H2O content of opx ranges from 119 ppm to 383 ppm; that of cpx from 407 ppm to 1072 ppm. We found anomalous H2O-enriched peridotites with their H2O content not correlating inversely with their degree of melting, although H2O is assumed to be incompatible during melting. Inverse correlation of H2O with Ce, another highly incompatible component, suggests post-melting H2O enrichment. We attribute a major role to post-melting temperature-dependent diffusion of hydrogen occurring above the melting region, where water-rich melt flows faster than residual peridotites through dunitic conduits cross-cutting the uprising mantle. Accordingly, estimates of the H2O content of the MORB mantle source based on H2O in abyssal peridotites can be affected by strong uncertainties
Ultraconformable Temporary Tattoo Electrodes for Electrophysiology
Electrically interfacing the skin for monitoring personal health condition is the basis of skin-contact electrophysiology. In the clinical practice the use of stiff and bulky pregelled or dry electrodes, in contrast to the soft body tissues, imposes severe restrictions to user comfort and mobility while limiting clinical applications. Here, in this work dry, unperceivable temporary tattoo electrodes are presented. Customized single or multielectrode arrays are readily fabricated by inkjet printing of conducting polymer onto commercial decal transfer paper, which allows for easy transfer on the user's skin. Conformal adhesion to the skin is provided thanks to their ultralow thickness (<1 µm). Tattoo electrode–skin contact impedance is characterized on short- (1 h) and long-term (48 h) and compared with standard pregelled and dry electrodes. The viability in electrophysiology is validated by surface electromyography and electrocardiography recordings on various locations on limbs and face. A novel concept of tattoo as perforable skin-contact electrode, through which hairs can grow, is demonstrated, thus permitting to envision very long-term recordings on areas with high hair density. The proposed materials and patterning strategy make this technology amenable for large-scale production of low-cost sensing devices
