    Mediation effect of students’ perception of accounting on the relationship between game-based learning and learning approaches

    This study explores the mediation effect of students’ perceptions toward accounting to enhance their adoption of the deep learning approach. We adopt game-based learning (GBL) using a self-developed LEGO® simulation game as the active learning material. Participants of this study comprised undergraduate students majoring in accounting from a northern university in Italy. This study contributes to the literature by providing several new insights. First, we present statistical evidence of a mediation effect of students’ perceptions toward accounting on their learning approach, although the course offers a short-time activity. Second, we did not confirm the significance of students’ strong image of conformity in accounting as a mediator in the relationship between GBL and a surface approach to learning. We interpret that students hold more favorable images of conformity to accounting than before taking the GBL course, possibly fostering them to engage with deep approach processes while adopting appropriate facilitation of active learning

    Iron Chelation Therapy in Myelodysplastic Syndromes

    Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a heterogeneous disorder of the hematopoietic stem cells, frequently characterized by anemia and transfusion dependency. In low-risk patients, transfusion dependency can be long lasting, leading to iron overload. Iron chelation therapy may be a therapeutic option for these patients, especially since the approval of oral iron chelators, which are easier to use and better accepted by the patients. The usefulness of iron chelation in MDS patients is still under debate, mainly because of the lack of solid prospective clinical trials that should take place in the future. This review aims to summarize what is currently known about the incidence and clinical consequences of iron overload in MDS patients and the state-of the-art of iron chelation therapy in this setting. We also give an overview of clinical guidelines for chelation in MDS published to date and some perspectives for the future

    Serosurvey of antibody to highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) in pigs, north central Nigeria

    Avian influenza is a disease of economic and public health importance that has been described in most domestic animals and humans. Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 epidemic in Nigeria was observed in agro-ecological zones where pigs and chickens are raised in shared environment with chances of interspecies transmission. We investigate the likelihood of transmission of the disease to pigs in North Central Nigeria where there were several cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 in both commercial and free range poultry. Two hundred and twenty swine sera collected in Kaduna and Plateau states were screened for influenza A/H5N1 antibody by haemagglutination inhibition test according to standard protocol. All the sera tested were negative for influenza A/H5 antibody (HA titre < 22). Our inability to detect appreciable antibody level to avian influenza A/H5N1 therefore may be due to lack of infection because of low susceptibility of pigs to Influenza A/H5N1. We recommend wider serological and virological studies to identify other circulating influenza virus in pigs in different agro-ecological zones to provide useful epidemiological data on evolving influenza virus.&#160

    SF3B1 Mutations in Hematological Malignancies

    Recently, mutations in the genes involved in the spliceosome have attracted considerable interest in different neoplasms. Among these, SF3B1 mutations have acquired great interest, especially in myelodysplastic syndromes, as they identify a subgroup of patients who can benefit from personalized therapy. The SF3B1 gene encodes the largest subunit of the splicing factor 3b protein complex and is critical for spliceosome assembly and mRNA splicing. The mutated SF3B1 gene encodes for a protein with a different mRNA processing mechanism that results in the aberrant splicing of many mRNAs, which can be downregulated. Although there are many mRNAs affected by a splicing alteration, only a few of these have been directly related to the pathogenesis of several diseases.     Multi-scale, class-generic, privacy-preserving video

    In recent years, high-performance video recording devices have become ubiquitous, posing an unprecedented challenge to preserving personal privacy. As a result, privacy-preserving video systems have been receiving increased attention. In this paper, we present a novel privacy-preserving video algorithm that uses semantic segmentation to identify regions of interest, which are then anonymized with an adaptive blurring algorithm. This algorithm addresses two of the most important shortcomings of existing solutions: it is multi-scale, meaning it can identify and uniformly anonymize objects of different scales in the same image, and it is class-generic, so it can be used to anonymize any class of objects of interest. We show experimentally that our algorithm achieves excellent anonymity while preserving meaning in the visual data processed
