GeV Scale Asymmetric Dark Matter from Mirror Universe: Direct Detection and LHC Signatures
Mirror universe is a fundamental way to restore parity symmetry in weak
interactions. It naturally provides the lightest mirror nucleon as a unique
GeV-scale asymmetric dark matter particle candidate. We conjecture that the
mirror parity is respected by the fundamental interaction Lagrangian, and its
possible soft breaking arises only from non-interaction terms in the
gauge-singlet sector. We realize the spontaneous mirror parity violation by
minimizing the vacuum Higgs potential, and derive the corresponding Higgs
spectrum. We demonstrate that the common origin of CP violation in the visible
and mirror neutrino seesaws can generate the right amount of matter and mirror
dark matter via leptogenesis. We analyze the direct detections of GeV-scale
mirror dark matter by TEXONO and CDEX experiments. We further study the

Online Unsupervised Multi-view Feature Selection
In the era of big data, it is becoming common to have data with multiple
modalities or coming from multiple sources, known as "multi-view data".
Multi-view data are usually unlabeled and come from high-dimensional spaces
(such as language vocabularies), unsupervised multi-view feature selection is
crucial to many applications. However, it is nontrivial due to the following
challenges. First, there are too many instances or the feature dimensionality
is too large. Thus, the data may not fit in memory. How to select useful
features with limited memory space? Second, how to select features from
streaming data and handles the concept drift? Third, how to leverage the
consistent and complementary information from different views to improve the
feature selection in the situation when the data are too big or come in as
streams? To the best of our knowledge, none of the previous works can solve all
the challenges simultaneously. In this paper, we propose an Online unsupervised
Multi-View Feature Selection, OMVFS, which deals with large-scale/streaming
multi-view data in an online fashion. OMVFS embeds unsupervised feature
selection into a clustering algorithm via NMF with sparse learning. It further
incorporates the graph regularization to preserve the local structure
information and help select discriminative features. Instead of storing all the
historical data, OMVFS processes the multi-view data chunk by chunk and
aggregates all the necessary information into several small matrices. By using
the buffering technique, the proposed OMVFS can reduce the computational and
storage cost while taking advantage of the structure information. Furthermore,
OMVFS can capture the concept drifts in the data streams. Extensive experiments
on four real-world datasets show the effectiveness and efficiency of the
proposed OMVFS method. More importantly, OMVFS is about 100 times faster than
the off-line methods
Research on flow-sound separation algorithm of aerodynamic noise based on immersed boundary method
With the development of theoretical models, numerical algorithms and available computational power, numerical aero-acoustics presents a huge prospect for solving the actual problems of aerodynamic noises. Under low Mach number, structures with a complicated geometric shapes were selected as the research objects to analyze their aerodynamic noises by means of flow-sound separation algorithm based on immersed boundary method. Firstly, the incompressible complicated flow field was solved on the basis of immersed boundary method, and the flow field parameters were obtained as the input values. Then, the linear compressible perturbation equation was solved to simulate generation and travel of acoustic waves. This method was used to predict the noise of flow past two circular cylinders in tandem arrangements and the aerodynamic noise of the rudimentary landing gear. The numerical simulation was then compared with the corresponding experiments, and results were consistent. That showed the algorithm proposed was feasible
A FRACTAL-BASED APPROACH TO THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF RECYCLED AGGREGATE CONCRETES
The mechanical properties of porous concrete, such as strength and durability, are significantly influenced by moisture transport, particularly in the case of recycled aggregate concretes. The pore distribution and pore size of the concrete, as well as the ambient temperature in the surrounding environment, exert a significant influence on the moisture transport. This paper establishes the fractal Fick’s law, the fractal Darcy law, and the fractal Richards equation. In conclusion, a fractal model for the diffusion and permeability in porous concrete is established. This study examines the mechanisms of moisture diffusion and water permeability in concrete. The comparison of the theoretical prediction with the experimental data indicates a high degree of congruence, thereby suggesting that the concrete’s relative humidity response can be predicted by the established model. This provides a foundation for the optimal design of concrete with required mechanical properties in special applications
The polarity protein VANG-1 antagonizes Wnt signaling by facilitating Frizzled endocytosis
Signaling that instructs the migration of neurons needs to be tightly regulated to ensure precise positioning of neurons and subsequent wiring of the neuronal circuits. Wnt-Frizzled signaling controls neuronal migration in metazoans, in addition to many other aspects of neural development. We show that Caenorhabditis elegans VANG-1, a membrane protein that acts in the planar cell polarity (PCP) pathway, antagonizes Wnt signaling by facilitating endocytosis of the Frizzled receptors. Mutations of vang-1 suppress migration defects of multiple classes of neurons in the Frizzled mutants, and overexpression of vang-1 causes neuronal migration defects similar to those of the Frizzled mutants. Our genetic experiments suggest that VANG-1 facilitates Frizzled endocytosis through β-arrestin2. Co-immunoprecipitation experiments indicate that Frizzled proteins and VANG-1 form a complex, and this physical interaction requires the Frizzled cysteine-rich domain. Our work reveals a novel mechanism mediated by the PCP protein VANG-1 that downregulates Wnt signaling through Frizzled endocytosis
Eliminating Plasmodium falciparum in Hainan, China: a study on the use of behavioural change communication intervention to promote malaria prevention in mountain worker populations
BACKGROUND: In the island of Hainan, the great majority of malaria cases occur in mountain worker populations. Using the behavioral change communication (BCC) strategy, an interventional study was conducted to promote mountain worker malaria prevention at a test site. This study found the methods and measures that are suitable for malaria prevention among mountain worker populations. METHODS: During the Plasmodium falciparum elimination stage in Hainan, a representative sampling method was used to establish testing and control sites in areas of Hainan that were both affected by malaria and had a relatively high density of mountain workers. Two different methods were used: a BCC strategy and a conventional strategy as a control. Before and after the intervention, house visits, core group discussions, and structural surveys were utilized to collect qualitative and quantitative data regarding mountain worker populations (including knowledge, attitudes, and practices [KAPs]; infection status; and serological data), and these data from the testing and control areas were compared to evaluate the effectiveness of BCC strategies in the prevention of malaria. RESULTS: In the BCC malaria prevention strategy testing areas, the accuracy rates of malaria-related KAP were significantly improved among mountain worker populations. The accuracy rates in the 3 aspects of malaria-related KAP increased from 37.73%, 37.00%, and 43.04% to 89.01%, 91.53%, and 92.25%, respectively. The changes in all 3 aspects of KAP were statistically significant (p < 0.01). In the control sites, the changes in the indices were not as marked as in the testing areas, and the change was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Furthermore, in the testing areas, both the percentage testing positive in the serum malaria indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) and the number of people inflicted decreased more significantly than in the control sites (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The use of the BCC strategy significantly improved the ability of mountain workers in Hainan to avoid malarial infection. Educational and promotional materials and measures were developed and selected in the process, and hands-on experience was gained that will help achieve the goal of total malaria elimination in Hainan
Mutant spectrum of dengue type 1 virus in the plasma of patients from the 2006 epidemic in South China
SummaryThe aim of the present study was to explore the mutant spectrum of dengue type 1 virus (DENV-1) within individuals during the 2006 dengue epidemic in South China. A 513-bp fragment including most of domain III of the envelope (E) gene was amplified directly from clinical samples, then cloned and sequenced. A total of 89 clones from six patients (range 11–17 clones per patient) were sequenced. Genetic diversity was calculated using MEGA 4 package. The total number of nucleotide mutations was 113 (3.7%) within the sequenced 513-bp E gene, with a range of 15 (3%) to 24 (4.7%) within individual viral populations, harboring more non-synonymous than synonymous mutations. The extent of sequence diversity varied among patients, with the mean diversity ranging from 0.19% to 0.32%, and the mean pairwise p-distance ranging from 0.34% to 0.65%. No genome-defective virus was detected in any clone in this study. Purifying selection may be the main driving force for the intrahost evolution: the mean dN/dS ratio was 0.532.
