    A Generalized Wine Quality Prediction Framework by Evolutionary Algorithms

    Wine is an exciting and complex product with distinctive qualities that makes it different from other manufactured products. Therefore, the testing approach to determine the quality of wine is complex and diverse. Several elements influence wine quality, but the views of experts can cause the most considerable influence on how people view the quality of wine. The views of experts on quality is very subjective, and may not match the taste of consumer. In addition, the experts may not always be available for the wine testing. To overcome this issue, many approaches based on machine learning techniques that get the attention of the wine industry have been proposed to solve it. However, they focused only on using a particular classifier with a specific set of wine dataset. In this paper, we thus firstly propose the generalized wine quality prediction framework to provide a mechanism for finding a useful hybrid model for wine quality prediction. Secondly, based on the framework, the generalized wine quality prediction algorithm using the genetic algorithms is proposed. It first encodes the classifiers as well as their hyperparameters into a chromosome. The fitness of a chromosome is then evaluated by the average accuracy of the employed classifiers. The genetic operations are performed to generate new offspring. The evolution process is continuing until reaching the stop criteria. As a result, the proposed approach can automatically find an appropriate hybrid set of classifiers and their hyperparameters for optimizing the prediction result and independent on the dataset. At last, experiments on the wine datasets were made to show the merits and effectiveness of the proposed approach

    Mobile Service Continuity for Edge Train Networks

In addition, edge networking have emerged as a solution for bringing services to the proximity of the users. However, deploying two-hop and edge networks do not guarantee a continuous service delivery for train users. When a large number of users transit from the train to the land, they experience service interruption due to control signalling storm and backhaul latency. In this paper, we propose a holistic edge service management system to provide mobile service continuity. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we develop an enhanced handover scheme that reduces control signals by handling user mobility at the edge. Second, we develop a pre-copy migration scheme that eliminates backhaul latency by relocating containerized applications to the user proximity across edge train networks. Our experimental results show that the two proposed solution can reduce the control signals and migration downtime by 50% and 36%, respectively.This work has been partially funded by the H2020 col-laborative Europe/Taiwan research project 5G-CORAL (grant no. 761586).     Exploring impacts of project leaders’ written expressions in virtual and fluid projects: The role of personality and emotion

    This paper aims to tackle challenges of managing projects in highly virtual and fluid contexts, characterized by diversity, dispersion, digital dependence, unstable membership, and dynamic coordination and configuration. We investigate project leaders’ personality and emotion expressed in written expression and examine their impacts on collaboration outcomes. IBM Watson Personality Insights and Tone Analyzer were adopted to assess the leader’s personality and emotion. A computation model to classify collaboration patterns into taskwork-related and teamwork-related communication is under development. We report preliminary findings based on 417 weekly meetings between October 2018 and February 2020 in 8 open-source software teams around WordPress. The research results have the potential to inform researchers and practitioners about what personality profiles and emotions should be considered to foster collaboration in virtual and fluid projects. It is possible to extend the boundary condition of the traits school of leadership for project management in the new context

    Increasing utilization of Internet-based resources following efforts to promote evidence-based medicine: a national study in Taiwan

    BACKGROUND: Since the beginning of 2007, the National Health Research Institutes has been promoting the dissemination of evidence-based medicine (EBM). The current study examined longitudinal trends of behaviors in how hospital-based physicians and nurses have searched for medical information during the spread of EBM. METHODS: Cross-sectional postal questionnaire surveys were conducted in nationally representative regional hospitals of Taiwan thrice in 2007, 2009, and 2011. Demographic data were gathered concerning gender, age, working experience, teaching appointment, academic degree, and administrative position. Linear and logistic regression models were used to examine predictors and changes over time. RESULTS: Data from physicians and nurses were collected in 2007 (n = 1156), 2009 (n = 2975), and 2011 (n = 3999). There were significant increases in the use of four Internet-based resources – Web portals, online databases, electronic journals, and electronic books – across the three survey years among physicians and nurses (p < 0.001). Access to textbooks and printed journals, however, did not change over the 4-year study period. In addition, there were significant relationships between the usage of Internet-based resources and users’ characteristics. Age and faculty position were important predictors in relation to the usage among physicians and nurses, while academic degree served as a critical factor among nurses only. CONCLUSIONS: Physicians and nurses used a variety of sources to look for medical information. There was a steady increase in use of Internet-based resources during the diffusion period of EBM. The findings highlight the importance of the Internet as a prominent source of medical information for main healthcare professionals

    Identification and characterization of 3-substituted pyrazolyl esters as alternate substrates for cathepsin B: The confounding effects of DTT and cysteine in biological assays

    Substituted pyrazole esters were identified as hits in a high throughput screen (HTS) of the NIH Molecular Libraries Small Molecule Repository (MLSMR) to identify inhibitors of the enzyme cathepsin B. Members of this class, along with functional group analogs, were synthesized in an effort to define the structural requirements for activity. Analog characterization was hampered by the need to include a reducing agent such as dithiothreitol (DTT) or cysteine in the assay, highlighting the caution required in interpreting biological data gathered in the presence of such nucleophiles. Despite the confounding effects of DTT and cysteine, our studies demonstrate that the pyrazole 1 acts as alternate substrate for cathepsin B, rather than as an inhibitor
