    Study on fatigue experiment for transverse butt weldsunder 2G and 3G weld positions

    ABSTRACTAlthough the transverse butt weld method with ceramic backing strip has been widely used in various industrial fields for its fabricational convenience, it is rarely used in offshore industries since the fatigue strength of the weld joint has not been proved sufficiently. This study conducted fatigue tests for series of butt weld specimens with horizontal (2G) and vertical (3G) welding positions in order to verify the fatigue strength compared to S-N curve by DNV (Det Norske Veritas), IIW (International Institute of Welding) and Eurocode 3. The difference of the 2G specimens and the 3G specimens are investigated in terms of angular distortion and the effect on the fatigue strength are analyzed

    The title compound, [Ni(C11H10N2O2)2](NO3)2, consists of an NiII atom coordinated by two tridentate chelating di-2-pyridylmethane­diol [(2-py)2C(OH)2] ligands. The NiII atom is located on an inversion center. The geometry around the NiII atom is distorted octa­hedral. The gem-diol (2-py)2C(OH)2 ligand adopts the coordination mode η1:η1:η1. The Ni—N and Ni—O bond lengths are typical for high-spin NiII in an octa­hedral environment [Ni—N = 2.094 (2) and 2.124 (3) Å, and Ni—O = 2.108 (3) Å]. One of the hydr­oxy H atoms is split over two positions which both inter­act with the nitrate anion. The occurence of different O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds leads to the formation of a layer parallel to the (101) plane

    Suggested Indications for Enucleation of Solid Pseudopapillary Neoplasms in Pediatric Patients

    Background: Solid pseudopapillary neoplasms (SPNs) are rare, low-grade, malignant neoplasms that can occur in pediatric patients. Although complete resection of the tumor is the principle treatment, SPN enucleation (EN) has been reported to be effective in children. This study aimed to examine the feasibility and safety of EN by comparing it with conventional pancreatectomy (CP), and to present the indications for its use in pediatric patients.Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 66 patients who underwent surgery for SPN at our institution from October 1992 to April 2018. Surgical methods, postoperative complications, hospital stay, and recurrence were compared.Results: Of the 66 patients, 15 (22.7%) were treated with EN and 51 (77.3%) were treated with CP. The mean duration of EN operation was 262 min (±145 min) and of CP was 345 min (±195 min). There was no statistically significant difference between the two methods (P = 0.13). To objectively compare the mass size between patients, we introduced a tumor size/intraperitoneal width ratio, which also revealed no significant difference between the 2 surgery groups (P = 0.21). The EN group had one case of recurrence at the resection site. The complications observed were fluid collection, splenic infarctions, hematomas, pancreatic fistulas, portal vein thromboses, and chylous drainage, among which pancreatic fistulas were the most frequent followed by moderate-severe fistulas in the EN group (P < 0.001). The mean postoperative fasting time (EN 17.0 ± 8.7 days vs. CP 5.1 ± 3.3 days, P < 0.001) and mean hospital stay (EN 23.4 ± 10.0 days vs. CP 13.2 ± 6.5 days, P = 0.002) showed statistically significant differences.Conclusion: Compared with CP treatment, EN of SPNs in children has the disadvantages of prolonged fasting times and hospital stays to recover from moderate pancreatic fistulas. However, if appropriate indications are applied, EN can be considered a safe and effective surgical procedure for children

    Macrophage Activation Syndrome in a Child with Systemic Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis

    Macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) is a rare and potentially fatal complication of rheumatic disorders in children. We describe a 13-month-old boy in whom MAS developed as a complication of systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (S-JRA). He suffered from fever and generalized rash followed by multiple joints swelling for four months before admission. Physical examination revealed cervical lymphadenopathy and hepatosplenomegaly. Laboratory findings were: abnormal liver enzymes, increased triglyceride and ferritin levels, coagulopathies resembling disseminated intravascular coagulation, anemia and thrombocytopenia. Hyperplasia of hemophagocytic macrophages was remarkable in his bone marrow. Methylprednisolone and cyclosporin therapy resulted in clinical and laboratory improvements. This is the third case of MAS associated with S-JRA in Koreans, and the first one, in which hemophagocytic macrophages were proven in bone marrow

    Identification of a novel ubiquitin binding site of STAM1 VHS domain by NMR spectroscopy

    AbstractInteraction between the signal-transducing adapter molecule 1 (STAM1) Vps27/Hrs/Stam (VHS) domain and ubiquitin was investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. NMR evidence showed that the structure of STAM1 VHS domain resembles that of other VHS domains, especially the homologous domain of STAM2. We found that the VHS domain binds to ubiquitin via its hydrophobic patch consisting of N-terminus of helix 2 and C-terminus of helix 4 in which Trp26 on helix 2 plays a pivotal role in the binding. The binding between VHS and ubiquitin seems to be very similar to that between ubiquitin associated domain (UBA) and ubiquitin, however, the direction of α-helices involved in the ubiquitin binding is opposite.     Recombinant Influenza Virus Carrying the Conserved Domain of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) G Protein Confers Protection Against RSV Without Inflammatory Disease

    Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is one of the most important causes for viral lower respiratory tract disease in humans. There is no licensed RSV vaccine. Here, we generated recombinant influenza viruses (PR8/RSV. HA-G) carrying the chimeric constructs of hemagglutinin (HA) and central conserved-domains of the RSV G protein. PR8/RSV.HA-G virus showed lower pathogenicity without compromising immunogenicity in mice. Single intranasal inoculation of mice with PR8/RSV.HA-G induced IgG2a isotype dominant antibodies and RSV neutralizing activity. Mice with single intranasal inoculation of PR8/RSV.HA-G were protected against RSV infection as evidenced by significant reduction of lung viral loads to a detection limit upon RSV challenge. PR8/RSV.HA-G inoculation of mice did not induce pulmonary eosinophilia and inflammation upon RSV infection. These findings support a concept that recombinant influenza viruses carrying the RSV G conserved-domain can be developed as a promising RSV vaccine candidate without pulmonary disease

    Abstract In structural health monitoring, crack identification using scattered ultrasonic waves from a crack is one of the most active research areas. Crack size estimation is important for judging the severity of the damage. If measurements are frequently performed as the crack grows, then a better estimation of crack size may be possible by analyzing sensor signals for the same crack location with different sizes. The objective of this article is to explore the relationship between the sensor signal amplitude and crack size through experiments and simulation for estimating the size. Cracks are machined into an aluminum plate and measurements are carried out with ultrasound excitation using piezoelectric transducer arrays that alternate their role as actuators or sensors. Initially, a hole of 2.5 mm diameter is drilled in the plate, and it is gradually machined to a crack with a size up to 50 mm. Signal amplitude is measured from the sensor arrays. The migration technique is used to image the crack and to find the crack location. The maximum received signal amplitude is found to vary linearly with size from simulation and this agrees with measurements with crack size up to 30 mm. The deviation between the simulation and experiment increases as the crack grows
