Exclusive production observed at the CMS experiment
Exclusive WW pair production in photon-photon collisions during
the pp runs at 7 and 8 TeV are observed and used to put constraints on the
Anomalous Quartic Gauge Couplings. During the proton lead collisions in
photon-induced vector meson production is observed via the decay of upsilon
into two muons. The slope of the squared p distribution is measured
to determine the size of the production region.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, to appear in the proceedings of DIS201
Measurement of Diffractive and Exclusive processes
With excellent performance the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment has
made a number of key observations in the diffractive and exclusive processes
and hence in probing the Standard model in a unique way. This presentation will

Study of Early Predictors of Fatality in Mechanically Ventilated Neonates in NICU
Objective: To evaluate the risk factors associated with fatality in mechanically ventilated neonates using multiple regression analysis. Design & settings: Prospective study conducted at Neonatal ICU at New Civil Hospital, Surat – a tertiary care centre, from December, 2007 to May, 2008 for 6 months. Methods: Fifty neonates in NICU consecutively put on mechanical ventilator during study period were enrolled in the study. The pressure limited time cycled ventilator was used. All admitted neonates were subjected to an arterial blood gas analysis along with a set of investigations to look for pulmonary maturity, infections, renal function, hyperbilirubinemia, intraventricular hemorrhage and congenital anomalies. Different investigation facilities were used as and when required during ventilation of neonates. Multiple logistic regression analysis was done to find out the predictors of fatality among these neonates. Results: Various factors suspected as predictors of fatality of mechanically ventilated neonates were assessed. Hypothermia, prolonged capillary refill time (CRT), initial requirement of oxygen fraction (FiO2) >0.6, alveolar to arterial PO2 difference (AaDO2) >250, alveolar to arterial PO2 ratio (a/A) <0.25, & oxygenation index (OI) >10 were found statistically highly significant predictors of mortality among mechanically ventilated neonates. Conclusion: Hypothermia and prolonged capillary refill time were independent predictors of fatality in neonatal mechanical ventilation. Risk of fatality can be identified in mechanically ventilated neonates
Laparoscopic myomectomy of a large pedunculated fibroid: case report
A 37 year old para 0 + 0 presented with abdominal pain and progressive abdominal swelling. She had no menstrual complains. Abdominal examination revealed a large 30 week non-tender, firm and mobile mass. A pelvic / abdominal ultrasound confirmed a 15.7 x 9.9 cm pedunculated fibroid arising from the uterine fundus. A laparoscopic myomectomy was successfully undertaken, and the morcellated fragments weighed 1490 grams. East African Medical Journal Vol. 85 (7) 2008: pp. 362-36
Prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding and its determinants in first 6 months of life: A prospective study
Background: Exclusive breastfeeding for first 6 months of life is recommended under Infant and Young Child Feeding practices in India. The objective of present study was to estimate the prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding during first 6 months of life of babies and to identify factors that interfere with the practice in the study area. Methods: A prospective cohort of 462 women who delivered at maternity unit of Government Medical College & Hospital, Rajkot, which is a tertiary care centre for the district, was studied. Data collection was done at hospital as well as during home visits of babies at 1, 3 and 6 months. Factors related to cessation of breastfeeding were analyzed using univariate, bivariate and multivariate analysis. Results: All 462 mothers reported breastfeeding their newborns. Prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding reported at 3 months was 97% which declined to 62% by 6 months of age of infants. Bivariate analysis revealed no significant association between interruption of exclusive breastfeeding before 6 months of age and various demographic, socioeconomic, maternal and infant characteristics. Multivariate analysis by logistic regression demonstrated no association between discontinuation of exclusive breastfeeding and socioeconomic status, maternal education and maternal age, number of antenatal visits, maternal employment and initiation of breastfeeding after delivery. Conclusion: Exclusive breastfeeding prevalence rate found higher than at national level indicating better feeding practices in these part of India. Also, factors classically considered as supportive for breastfeeding had shown no association with breastfeeding pattern in present study
A novel synthetic chemistry approach to linkage-specific ubiquitin conjugation.
Ubiquitination is of great importance as the post-translational modification of proteins with ubiquitin, or ubiquitin chains, facilitates a number of vital cellular processes. Herein we present a facile method of preparing various ubiquitin conjugates under mild conditions using michael acceptors based on dibromo-maleimides and dibromo-pyridazinediones
Current iodine status and progress over the last decade towards elimination of iodine deficiency in Rajkot District, Gujarat
Objective: To find out prevalence of goitre in primary school children; to compare prevalence with previous survey; to determine median urinary iodine concentration; to assess level of iodine in salt samples at household and retail shop level; and to study profile of salt sold at retail shops. Design & Settings: 30 cluster survey study in primary schools of Rajkot district. Subjects: Children studying in 1st to 7th standard. Methods: Total 70 students including five boys and five girls from 1st to 7th standard present in class on the day of visit were selected randomly for Goitre examination, so, total 2100 students were examined in schools. Urine sample was collected from one boy & one girl from each standard in each cluster. From community, 28 students including two boys and two girls from each standard in same age group were examined and also salt samples were tested from their households. From each village, one retail shop was visited and salts were purchased and tested for iodine on the spot with spot kit. Results: Goitre prevalence was found 8.8% among primary school children compare to 5.6% in 1999. As the age increases the Goitre prevalence also increases except in age group of 12 years. Median urinary iodine excretion level was found 110 µg/L. Iodine level >15 ppm was found in 81% salts samples tested at household level. Conclusion: Present study showed mild Goitre prevalence in primary school children in Rajkot district of Gujarat but still iodine content of salt found inadequate at household level
Sickle cell disease status among school adolescents and their tribal community in South Gujarat
Objectives: to create awareness, to screen samples of school adolescents and then to reach their community through them by doing surveillance for sickle cell disease. Design: Field based cross-sectional study. Settings: St Xavier`s high school and Vanraj high school of Umarpada taluka of Surat district. Subjects: School adolescents, their parents and friends. Method: After taking permission from school authority, blood samples of 948 school adolescents were taken for DTT test and then for electrophoresis. Blood samples of motivated parents and friends of those adolescents found positive for DTT was taken in subsequent visit and results were communicated to them. Results: Blood samples of 948 school adolescents, out of 1081 were tested for DTT test. It was positive in 242 samples, giving a prevalence of 25.5% for sickle cell disease. On subjecting the positive blood samples to electrophoresis, the proportion of sickle cell trait and sickle cell disease was found to be 92% and 8% respectively. Then electrophoresis was done in 64 parents and friends, 24 (37.5%) of them were found positive of which, 14 (58%) were having sickle cell trait and 10 (42%) having sickle cell disease. Conclusion: approaching community can be possible through school adolescents for conduction of surveillance of sickle cell anemi
Pentafluorophenyl vinyl sulfonate enables efficient, metal-free, radical-based alkene hydroacylation with an aldehyde as a limiting reagent
The unique properties of pentafluorophenyl vinyl sulfonate allow for a hitherto unmet feat to be realised; efficient and high yielding, metal-free, radical-based alkene hydroacylation employing aldehyde as limiting reagent. The optimised conditions are shown to work in good yields across a series of aldehydes, thus demonstrating the wide applicability of the developed protocol
