    Presented at the Role of irrigation and drainage in a sustainable future: USCID fourth international conference on irrigation and drainage on October 3-6, 2007 in Sacramento, California.In addition to increasingly frequent water shortage problems, agricultural water sector is also challenged by environmental issues. The objective of this article is to summarize, as well as propose sustainable strategies for agricultural sector in response to current environmental challenges. For water shortage problems, which are becoming more and more frequent worldwide including Taiwan, measures for irrigation water, such as extending irrigation periods, decreasing number of irrigation application times, or rotational irrigation, are introduced and discussed. When borrowing or transfer of water among sectors is needed in Taiwan, it is usually from agricultural irrigation water to other sectors in almost all cases. The maintenance of water right, and compensation to farmers for their income loss, are the two major issues. As for environmental changes, the impact of the accession of Taiwan to WTO (World Trade Organization) is discussed specifically in this article, and a management scheme in order to save irrigation water, which could be used for other purposes, is suggested in this article

    Serial increase of IL-12 response and human leukocyte antigen-DR expression in severe sepsis survivors

    Introduction: Sepsis-induced immunosuppression may result in death. The mechanisms of immune suppression include loss of macrophage and monocyte expression of the major histocompatibility complex, increased anti-inflammatory cytokine expression and decreased expression of proinflammatory cytokines. In this study, we sought to determine the mechanisms of immune suppression in severe sepsis by repeated detection. Methods: We designed this prospective observational study to measure monocyte human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DR expression, plasma cytokine levels and cytokine responses on days 1 and 7 in stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of healthy controls and patients with severe sepsis. Results: Of the 35 enrolled patients, 23 survived for 28 days and 12 died, 6 of whom died within 7 days. Plasma levels of IL-1 beta, IL-6, IL-10, IL-17, transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta 1 and TNF-alpha were higher, but plasma IL-12 level was lower in septic patients than those in controls. Day 1 plasma levels of IL-1 beta, IL-6, IL-10 and TGF-beta 1 in nonsurvivors were higher than those in survivors. Day 7 plasma IL-10 levels in nonsurvivors were higher than in survivors. IL-1 beta response was higher, but IL-12 and TNF-alpha responses were lower in septic patients than in controls. Day 1 IL-6 response was lower, but day 1 TGF-beta 1 response was higher in nonsurvivors than in survivors. Plasma IL-6 and IL-10 levels were decreased in survivors after 6 days. IL-6 response was decreased in survivors after 6 days, but IL-12 response was increased. Monocyte percentage was higher, but positive HLA-DR percentage in monocytes and mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) of HLA-DR were lower in septic patients than in controls. MFI of HLA-DR was increased in survivors after 6 days. Conclusions: Monocyte HLA-DR expression and IL-12 response from PBMCs are restored in patients who survive severe sepsis

    Lasing on nonlinear localized waves in curved geometry

    The use of geometrical constraints opens many new perspectives in photonics and in fundamental studies of nonlinear waves. By implementing surface structures in vertical cavity surface emitting lasers as manifolds for curved space, we experimentally study the impacts of geometrical constraints on nonlinear wave localization. We observe localized waves pinned to the maximal curvature in an elliptical-ring, and confirm the reduction in the localization length of waves by measuring near and far field patterns, as well as the corresponding dispersion relation. Theoretically, analyses based on a dissipative model with a parabola curve give good agreement remarkably to experimental measurement on the transition from delocalized to localized waves. The introduction of curved geometry allows to control and design lasing modes in the nonlinear regime.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

    Comparison of visual outcomes after epiretinal membrane surgery

    AbstractPurposeTo elucidate the anatomical and visual outcomes of patients with idiopathic epiretinal membranes (ERM) who underwent vitrectomy, membrane removal only, or with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling under the assistance of different dyes.MethodsA retrospective chart review of patients with idiopathic ERM who received surgical treatment between January 2004 and December 2009. The patients were grouped according to the usage of staining materials assisting ILM peeling. Group 1 consisted of 61 eyes that underwent conventional vitrectomy and ERM peeling without staining-assisted ILM peeling. Group 2 consisted of 20 eyes with triamcinolone acetonide-assisted ILM peeling following conventional vitrectomy. Group 3 consisted of 23 eyes with indocyanine green-assisted ILM peeling following conventional vitrectomy.ResultsThis study included 104 eyes from 104 patients. There was no significant difference in age, sex, preoperative visual acuity, retinal thickness or follow-up duration among the three groups. Overall, the mean best-corrected visual acuity improved significantly from baseline 0.15 to postoperative 0.41 (p<0.0001). Among the three groups, the mean logarithm minimum angle of resolution acuity markedly improved. There was no significant difference in postoperative visual acuity among groups. As measured by ocular coherent tomography, the mean central foveal thickness decreased from 465.21±86.18 to 299.16±70.14μm. Although there was no difference between groups, postoperative retinal thickness was thicker than that observed in the normal population. The incidence of recurrent ERM was 13.1% in Group 1 and 0% in Groups 2 and 3; this incidence was significantly higher than in the conventional surgery group. Visual outcome was statistically more deteriorated in recurrent cases than in non-recurrent cases (p=0.011).ConclusionsERM surgeries with or without dye-assisted ILM peeling showed similar results. Moreover, the incidence of recurrence is lower in the ILM peeling groups and plays a primary role in determining the final postoperative vision outcome

    Polymicrobial bloodstream infection involving Aeromonas species: Analysis of 62 cases

    AbstractObjectiveTo better understand Aeromonas-involved polymicrobial bacteremia (AIPMB).Materials and MethodsWe conducted a retrospective analysis of patients with AIPMB admitted to three large referral hospitals in Taiwan between 2001 and 2008.ResultsOf a total of 62 patients with AIPMB, 22 had healthcare-associated infection and 40 had community-acquired infection. Enterobacteriaceae was the most common concurrent pathogen (82%). The leading underlying diseases/conditions in the affected patients were solid cancers (45%), recent gastric acid suppressant therapy (39%) and liver cirrhosis (26%). More than 95% of the Aeromonas isolates were susceptible to an aminoglycoside, a third- or fourth-generation cephalosporin, imipenem or ciprofloxacin. Antibiotic susceptibilities did not significantly differ between Aeromonas isolates in patients with healthcare-associated AIPMBs and those in patients with community-acquired AIPMBs. Coinfection with Enterobacteriaceae occurred more commonly in community-acquired AIPMB (93% vs. 64%; p=0.012).ConclusionsAIPMB occurred commonly in patients with liver cirrhosis, solid cancers or recent gastric acid suppressant therapy. Enterobacteriaceae were the most common concurrent pathogens. Similar antibiotic profiles were found in Aeromonas isolates of healthcare-associated and community-acquired AIPMBs

    Computational modeling with forward and reverse engineering links signaling network and genomic regulatory responses: NF-κB signaling-induced gene expression responses in inflammation

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Signal transduction is the major mechanism through which cells transmit external stimuli to evoke intracellular biochemical responses. Diverse cellular stimuli create a wide variety of transcription factor activities through signal transduction pathways, resulting in different gene expression patterns. Understanding the relationship between external stimuli and the corresponding cellular responses, as well as the subsequent effects on downstream genes, is a major challenge in systems biology. Thus, a systematic approach is needed to integrate experimental data and theoretical hypotheses to identify the physiological consequences of environmental stimuli.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We proposed a systematic approach that combines forward and reverse engineering to link the signal transduction cascade with the gene responses. To demonstrate the feasibility of our strategy, we focused on linking the NF-κB signaling pathway with the inflammatory gene regulatory responses because NF-κB has long been recognized to play a crucial role in inflammation. We first utilized forward engineering (Hybrid Functional Petri Nets) to construct the NF-κB signaling pathway and reverse engineering (Network Components Analysis) to build a gene regulatory network (GRN). Then, we demonstrated that the corresponding IKK profiles can be identified in the GRN and are consistent with the experimental validation of the IKK kinase assay. We found that the time-lapse gene expression of several cytokines and chemokines (TNF-α, IL-1, IL-6, CXCL1, CXCL2 and CCL3) is concordant with the NF-κB activity profile, and these genes have stronger influence strength within the GRN. Such regulatory effects have highlighted the crucial roles of NF-κB signaling in the acute inflammatory response and enhance our understanding of the systemic inflammatory response syndrome.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We successfully identified and distinguished the corresponding signaling profiles among three microarray datasets with different stimuli strengths. In our model, the crucial genes of the NF-κB regulatory network were also identified to reflect the biological consequences of inflammation. With the experimental validation, our strategy is thus an effective solution to decipher cross-talk effects when attempting to integrate new kinetic parameters from other signal transduction pathways. The strategy also provides new insight for systems biology modeling to link any signal transduction pathways with the responses of downstream genes of interest.</p
