Control of Multi-level Voltage States in a Hysteretic SQUID Ring-Resonator System

    Get PDF
In this paper we study numerical solutions to the quasi-classical equations of motion for a SQUID ring-radio frequency (rf) resonator system in the regime where the ring is highly hysteretic. In line with experiment, we show that for a suitable choice of of ring circuit parameters the solutions to these equations of motion comprise sets of levels in the rf voltage-current dynamics of the coupled system. We further demonstrate that transitions, both up and down, between these levels can be controlled by voltage pulses applied to the system, thus opening up the possibility of high order (e.g. 10 state), multi-level logic and memory.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure

    Interacting classical and quantum particles

We apply Hall and Reginatto's theory of interacting classical and quantum ensembles to harmonically coupled particles, with a view to understanding its experimental implications. This hybrid theory has no free parameters and makes distinctive predictions that should allow it to be experimentally distinguished from quantum mechanics. It also bears on the questions of quantum measurement and quantum gravity.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

Tele-operated high speed anthropomorphic dextrous hands with object shape and texture identification

    Get PDF
This paper reports on the development of two number of robotic hands have been developed which focus on tele-operated high speed anthropomorphic dextrous robotic hands. The aim of developing these hands was to achieve a system that seamlessly interfaced between humans and robots. To provide sensory feedback, to a remote operator tactile sensors were developed to be mounted on the robotic hands. Two systems were developed, the first, being a skin sensor capable of shape reconstruction placed on the palm of the hand to feed back the shape of objects grasped and the second is a highly sensitive tactile array for surface texture identification

Sampling rare fluctuations of height in the Oslo ricepile model

We have studied large deviations of the height of the pile from its mean value in the Oslo ricepile model. We sampled these very rare events with probabilities of order 10−10010^{-100} by Monte Carlo simulations using importance sampling. These simulations check our qualitative arguement [Phys. Rev. E, {\bf 73}, 021303, 2006] that in steady state of the Oslo ricepile model, the probability of large negative height fluctuations Δh=−αL\Delta h=-\alpha L about the mean varies as exp⁥(−Îșα4L3)\exp(-\kappa {\alpha}^4 L^3) as L→∞L \to \infty with α\alpha held fixed, and Îș>0\kappa > 0.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure

InGaN nano-ring structures for high-efficiency light emitting diodes

    Get PDF
A technique based on the Fresnel diffraction effect for the fabrication of nano-scale site-controlled ring structures in InGaN/GaN multi-quantum well structures has been demonstrated. The ring structures have an internal diameter of 500 nm and a wall width of 300 nm. A 1 cm-1 Raman shift has been measured, signifying substantial strain relaxation from the fabricated structure. The 9 nm blueshift observed in the cathodoluminescence spectra can be attributed to band filling and/or screening of the piezoelectric field. A light emitting diode based on this geometry has been demonstrated

Phenomenological Consequences of Right-handed Down Squark Mixings

The mixings of dRd_R quarks, hidden from view in Standard Model (SM), are naturally the largest if one has an Abelian flavor symmetry. With supersymmetry (SUSY) their effects can surface via d~R\tilde d_R squark loops. Squark and gluino masses are at TeV scale, but they can still induce effects comparable to SM in BdB_d (or BsB_s) mixings, while D0D^0 mixing could be close to recent hints from data. In general, CP phases would be different from SM, as may be indicated by recent B Factory data. Presence of non-standard soft SUSY breakings with large tan⁥ÎČ\tan\beta could enhance b→dÎłb\to d\gamma (or sÎłs\gamma) transitions.Comment: Version to appear in Phys. Rev. Let

An automated high-content screening image analysis pipeline for the identification of selective autophagic inducers in human cancer cell lines.

    Get PDF
Automated image processing is a critical and often rate-limiting step in high-content screening (HCS) workflows. The authors describe an open-source imaging-statistical framework with emphasis on segmentation to identify novel selective pharmacological inducers of autophagy. They screened a human alveolar cancer cell line and evaluated images by both local adaptive and global segmentation. At an individual cell level, region-growing segmentation was compared with histogram-derived segmentation. The histogram approach allowed segmentation of a sporadic-pattern foreground and hence the attainment of pixel-level precision. Single-cell phenotypic features were measured and reduced after assessing assay quality control. Hit compounds selected by machine learning corresponded well to the subjective threshold-based hits determined by expert analysis. Histogram-derived segmentation displayed robustness against image noise, a factor adversely affecting region growing segmentation

Multilingual advertising in the linguistic landscape of Seoul

This study examines commercial signs in arguably the two most visited tourism districts in Seoul, namely Myeongdong and Insadong. It focuses on beauty and food businesses and analyzes featured languages and their content and roles in signage. This article argues that business types, specialized marketing focus, and intended sales pitch influence business owners’ linguistic choices. The findings of the study suggest that the beauty industry relies heavily on English in general, but the power of K‐Beauty popularized by ‘Hallyu’ (The Korean Wave) beyond Korea inevitably invites linguistic accommodation in the form of using Chinese and Japanese. In general, the business category of beauty features a more prevalent use of English than the gastronomic business in this study. Moreover, as an area specializing in traditions and cultural heritage, Insadong shows more signs exclusively in Korean than in Myeongdong.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/151302/1/weng12427_am.pdfhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/151302/2/weng12427.pd
