    Memory difference control of unknown unstable fixed points: Drifting parameter conditions and delayed measurement

    Difference control schemes for controlling unstable fixed points become important if the exact position of the fixed point is unavailable or moving due to drifting parameters. We propose a memory difference control method for stabilization of a priori unknown unstable fixed points by introducing a memory term. If the amplitude of the control applied in the previous time step is added to the present control signal, fixed points with arbitrary Lyapunov numbers can be controlled. This method is also extended to compensate arbitrary time steps of measurement delay. We show that our method stabilizes orbits of the Chua circuit where ordinary difference control fails.Comment: 5 pages, 8 figures. See also chao-dyn/9810029 (Phys. Rev.     Andreev Probe of Persistent Current States in Superconducting Quantum Circuits

    Using the extraordinary sensitivity of Andreev interferometers to the superconducting phase difference associated with currents, we measure the persistent current quantum states in superconducting loops interrupted by Josephson junctions. Straightforward electrical resistance measurements of the interferometers give continuous read-out of the states, allowing us to construct the energy spectrum of the quantum circuit. The probe is estimated to be more precise and faster than previous methods, and can measure the local phase difference in a wide range of superconducting circuits.Comment: Changes made in light of referees comments; to appear in PR

    Quantum Hall Effect and Quantum Point Contact in Bilayer-Patched Epitaxial Graphene

    We study an epitaxial graphene monolayer with bilayer inclusions via magnetotransport measurements and scanning gate microscopy at low temperatures. We find that bilayer inclusions can be metallic or insulating depending on the initial and gated carrier density. The metallic bilayers act as equipotential shorts for edge currents, while closely spaced insulating bilayers guide the flow of electrons in the monolayer constriction, which was locally gated using a scanning gate probe.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Bifurcations, Chaos, Controlling and Synchronization of Certain Nonlinear Oscillators

    In this set of lectures, we review briefly some of the recent developments in the study of the chaotic dynamics of nonlinear oscillators, particularly of damped and driven type. By taking a representative set of examples such as the Duffing, Bonhoeffer-van der Pol and MLC circuit oscillators, we briefly explain the various bifurcations and chaos phenomena associated with these systems. We use numerical and analytical as well as analogue simulation methods to study these systems. Then we point out how controlling of chaotic motions can be effected by algorithmic procedures requiring minimal perturbations.     Hadronic B Decays to Charmed Baryons

    We study exclusive B decays to final states containing a charmed baryon within the pole model framework. Since the strong coupling for ΛbBˉN\Lambda_b\bar B N is larger than that for ΣbBˉN\Sigma_b \bar BN, the two-body charmful decay B−→Σc0pˉB^-\to\Sigma_c^0\bar p has a rate larger than Bˉ0→Λc+pˉ\bar B^0\to\Lambda_c^+\bar p as the former proceeds via the Λb\Lambda_b pole while the latter via the Σb\Sigma_b pole. By the same token, the three-body decay Bˉ0→Σc++pˉπ−\bar B^0\to\Sigma_c^{++}\bar p\pi^- receives less baryon-pole contribution than B−→Λc+pˉπ−B^-\to\Lambda_c^+\bar p\pi^-. However, because the important charmed-meson pole diagrams contribute constructively to the former and destructively to the latter, Σc++pˉπ−\Sigma_c^{++}\bar p\pi^- has a rate slightly larger than Λc+pˉπ−\Lambda_c^+\bar p\pi^-. It is found that one quarter of the B−→Λc+pˉπ−B^-\to \Lambda_c^+\bar p\pi^- rate comes from the resonant contributions. We discuss the decays Bˉ0→Σc0pˉπ+\bar B^0\to\Sigma_c^0\bar p\pi^+ and B−→Σc0pˉπ0B^-\to\Sigma_c^0\bar p\pi^0 and stress that they are not color suppressed even though they can only proceed via an internal W emission.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figure

    In 2008, researchers at HP Labs published a paper in {\it Nature} reporting the realisation of a new basic circuit element that completes the missing link between charge and flux-linkage, which was postulated by Leon Chua in 1971. The HP memristor is based on a nanometer scale TiO2_2 thin-film, containing a doped region and an undoped region. Further to proposed applications of memristors in artificial biological systems and nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM), they also enable reconfigurable nanoelectronics. Moreover, memristors provide new paradigms in application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). A significant reduction in area with an unprecedented memory capacity and device density are the potential advantages of memristors for Integrated Circuits (ICs). This work reviews the memristor and provides mathematical and SPICE models for memristors. Insight into the memristor device is given via recalling the quasi-static expansion of Maxwell's equations.     Probing SUSY-induced CP violations at B factories

    In the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), the \mu-parameter and the trilinear coupling A_t may be generically complex and can affect various observables at B factories. Imposing the edm constraints, we find that there is no new large phase shift in the B^0 - \bar{B^0} mixing, CP violating dilepton asymmetry is smaller than 0.1 %, and the direct CP violation in B\to X_s \gamma can be as large as \sim \pm 16 %.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures.     SU(3) and Nonet Breaking Effects in KL→γγK_L \to \gamma \gamma Induced by s→d+2gluons \to d + 2{gluon} due to Anomaly

    In this paper we study the effects of s→d+2gluons\to d + 2{gluon} on KL→γγK_L \to \gamma\gamma in the Standard Model. We find that this interaction can induce new sizeable SU(3) and U(3) nonet breaking effects in KL−η,η′K_L - \eta, \eta' transitions and therefore in KL→γγK_L\to \gamma\gamma due to large matrix elements of from QCD anomaly. These new effects play an important role in explaining the observed value.     Microwave assisted heterogeneous catalysis: effects of varying oxygen concentrations on the oxidative coupling of methane

    The oxidative coupling of methane was investigated over alumina supported La2O3/CeO2 catalysts under microwave dielectric heating conditions at different oxygen concentrations. It was observed that, at a given temperature using microwave heating, selectivities for both ethane and ethylene were notably higher when oxygen was absent than that in oxygen/methane mixtures. The differences were attributed to the localised heating of microwave radiation resulting in temperature inhomogeneity in the catalyst bed. A simplified model was used to estimate the temperature inhomogeneity; the temperature at the centre of the catalyst bed was 85 °C greater than that at the periphery when the catalyst was heated by microwaves in a gas mixture with an oxygen concentration of 12.5% (v/v), and the temperature difference was estimated to be 168 °C in the absence of oxygen
