Structure of CdTe/ZnTe superlattices
The structure of CdTe/ZnTe superlattices has been analyzed through θ/2θ x‐ray diffraction, photoluminescence, and in situ reflection high‐energy electron diffraction (RHEED) measurements. Samples are found to break away from Cd_(x)Zn_(1−x)Te buffer layers as a consequence of the 6% lattice mismatch in this system. However, defect densities in these superlattices are seen to drop dramatically away from the buffer layer interface, accounting for the intense photoluminescence and high‐average strain fields seen in each of our samples. Observed variations in residual strains suggest that growth conditions play a role in forming misfit defects. This could explain discrepancies with calculated values of critical thickness based on models which neglect growth conditions. Photoluminescence spectra reveal that layer‐to‐layer growth proceeded with single monolayer uniformity, suggesting highly reproducible growth. Our results give hope for relatively defect‐free Cd_(x)Zn_(1−x)Te/Cd_(y)Zn_(1−y)Te superlattices with the potential for applications to optoelectronics offered by intense visible light emitters
Timing matters: impact of anticonvulsant drug treatment and spikes on seizure risk in benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes
OBJECTIVE: Benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) is a common, self-limited epilepsy syndrome affecting school-age children. Classic interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) confirm diagnosis, and BECTS is presumed to be pharmacoresponsive. As seizure risk decreases in time with this disease, we hypothesize that the impact of IEDs and anticonvulsive drug (ACD) treatment on the risk of subsequent seizure will differ based on disease duration. METHODS: We calculate subsequent seizure risk following diagnosis in a large retrospective cohort of children with BECTS (n = 130), evaluating the impact of IEDs and ACD treatment in the first, second, third, and fourth years of disease. We use a Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and logistic regression models. Patients were censored if they were lost to follow-up or if they changed group status. RESULTS: Two-thirds of children had a subsequent seizure within 2 years of diagnosis. The majority of children had a subsequent seizure within 3 years despite treatment. The presence of IEDs on electroencephalography (EEG) did not impact subsequent seizure risk early in the disease. By the fourth year of disease, all children without IEDs remained seizure free, whereas one-third of children with IEDs at this stage had a subsequent seizure. Conversely, ACD treatment corresponded with lower risk of seizure early in the disease but did not impact seizure risk in later years. SIGNIFICANCE: In this cohort, the majority of children with BECTS had a subsequent seizure despite treatment. In addition, ACD treatment and IEDs predicted seizure risk at specific points of disease duration. Future prospective studies are needed to validate these exploratory findings.Published versio
High performance photonic microwave filters based on a 50GHz optical soliton crystal Kerr micro-comb
We demonstrate a photonic radio frequency (RF) transversal filter based on an
integrated optical micro-comb source featuring a record low free spectral range
of 49 GHz yielding 80 micro-comb lines across the C-band. This record-high
number of taps, or wavelengths for the transversal filter results in
significantly increased performance including a QRF factor more than four times
higher than previous results. Further, by employing both positive and negative
taps, an improved out-of-band rejection of up to 48.9 dB is demonstrated using
Gaussian apodization, together with a tunable centre frequency covering the RF
spectra range, with a widely tunable 3-dB bandwidth and versatile dynamically
adjustable filter shapes. Our experimental results match well with theory,
showing that our transversal filter is a competitive solution to implement
advanced adaptive RF filters with broad operational bandwidths, high frequency
selectivity, high reconfigurability, and potentially reduced cost and
footprint. This approach is promising for applications in modern radar and

SAM-2 ground-truth plan: Correlative measurements for the Stratospheric Aerosol Measurement-2 (SAM 2) sensor on the Nimbus G satellite
The SAM-2 will fly aboard the Nimbus-G satellite for launch in the fall of 1978 and measure stratospheric vertical profiles of aerosol extinction in high latitude bands. The plan gives details of the location and times for the simultaneous satellite/correlative measurements for the nominal launch time, the rationale and choice of the correlative sensors, their characteristics and expected accuracies, and the conversion of their data to extinction profiles. The SAM-2 expected instrument performance and data inversion results are presented.
