    The Effect of Advertisement Frequency on the Advertisement Attitude-The controlled Effects of Brand Image and Spokesperson's Credibility

    AbstractAdvertising has been playing a critical channel of communication between enterprises and consumers. To reinforce consumersā€™ impressions of advertising, enterprises, based on their brand image, strive for the right spokesperson for their products or service. However, in addition to brand image and spokespersons, advertising frequency that can impress general populace is also a factor to affect the consumersā€™ attitude to the advertisement. This paper discusses not only the effect of brand image and spokesperson's credibility but also the effect of advertising frequency on consumersā€™ attitude. This study was conducted by the experimental design. The study sample comprised 457 college students. Analysed by ANCOVA, the results showed that the brand image and the spokesperson's credibility both had a significantly positive influence on consumersā€™ attitude to advertising. Moreover, advertising frequency was significantly influential, too. Theoretical and practical implications of this study were stated for future study

    Img2Logo:Generating Golden Ratio Logos from Images

    Logos are one of the most important graphic design forms that use an abstracted shape to clearly represent the spirit of a community. Among various styles of abstraction, a particular golden-ratio design is frequently employed by designers to create a concise and regular logo. In this context, designers utilize a set of circular arcs with golden ratios (i.e., all arcs are taken from circles whose radii form a geometric series based on the golden ratio) as the design elements to manually approximate a target shape. This error-prone process requires a large amount of time and effort, posing a significant challenge for design space exploration. In this work, we present a novel computational framework that can automatically generate golden ratio logo abstractions from an input image. Our framework is based on a set of carefully identified design principles and a constrained optimization formulation respecting these principles. We also propose a progressive approach that can efficiently solve the optimization problem, resulting in a sequence of abstractions that approximate the input at decreasing levels of detail. We evaluate our work by testing on images with different formats including real photos, clip arts, and line drawings. We also extensively validate the key components and compare our results with manual results by designers to demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework. Moreover, our framework can largely benefit design space exploration via easy specification of design parameters such as abstraction levels, golden circle sizes, etc

    Aerosolized Colistin for the Treatment of Multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii Pneumonia: Experience in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Northern Taiwan

    Background/PurposeVentilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) due to multidrug-resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii in critically ill patients presents an emerging challenge to clinicians. Administration of aerosolized colistin as an adjunctive therapy is one therapeutic option mentioned in limited evidence-based studies. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of adjunctive aerosolized colistin treatment for VAP due to MDR pathogens.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients who had received aerosolized colistin for treatment of VAP due to MDR A. baumannii in our hospital from August to December 2008.ResultsForty-five patients were enrolled in our study. The mean age was 71 Ā± 15 years. The mean Acute Physiological and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) scores on the day of intensive care unit admission and on the first day of aerosolized colistin administration were 22.5 Ā± 6.7 and 18.9 Ā± 5.7, respectively. The mean duration of intensive care unit stay was 34 Ā± 16 days. The mean daily dosage of aerosolized colistin was 4.29 Ā± 0.82 million IU, and the mean duration of administration was 10.29 days. Seventeen patients (37.8%) had a favorable microbiological outcome and 26 (57.8%) showed a clinical response. Mortality due to all causes was 42.2%. No adverse effects related to inhaled colistin were recorded.ConclusionAerosolized colistin may be considered as an adjunct to intravenous treatments in patients with VAP due to colistin-susceptible MDR A. baumannii in critically ill patients

    Anomalous Hall effect at half filling in twisted bilayer graphene

    Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) has been studied extensively owing to its wealth of symmetry-broken phases, correlated Chern insulators, orbital magnetism, and superconductivity. In particular, the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) has been observed at odd integer filling factors (Ī½=1\nu=1 and 33) in a small number of tBLG devices, indicating the emergence of a zero-field orbital magnetic state with spontaneously broken time-reversal symmetry. However, the AHE is typically not anticipated at half filling (Ī½=2\nu=2) owing to competing intervalley coherent states, as well as spin-polarized and valley Hall states that are favored by an intervalley Hund's coupling. Here, we present measurements of two tBLG devices with twist angles slightly away from the magic angle (0.96āˆ˜^{\circ} and 1.20āˆ˜^{\circ}), in which we report the surprising observation of the AHE at Ī½=+2\nu=+2 and āˆ’2-2, respectively. These findings imply that a valley-polarized phase can become the ground state at half filling in tBLG rotated slightly away from the magic angle. Our results reveal the emergence of an unexpected ground state in the intermediately-coupled regime (U/Wāˆ¼1U/W \sim 1, where UU is the strength of Coulomb repulsion and WW is the bandwidth), in between the strongly-correlated insulator and weakly-correlated metal, highlighting the need to develop a more complete understanding of tBLG away from the strongly-coupled limit.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figure

    Clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of patients with tubo-ovarian abscess at a tertiary care hospital in Northern Taiwan

    Background/PurposeControversy exists regarding the need for surgical intervention in patients with tubo-ovarian abscess (TOA). This study was aimed at investigating the clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes in patients with TOA at a tertiary care hospital in Taiwan.MethodsThe medical records of 83 patients who presented at the hospital with TOA between January 1, 2006, and December 31, 2007, were retrospectively reviewed. Outcomes of patients who received medical treatment alone or underwent surgical intervention were analyzed using univariate and logistic regression analyses.ResultsAmong the 83 patients with TOA, 13 patients (15.7%) underwent surgical intervention, and 70 patients (84.3%) received medical treatment alone. Significant variables related toĀ surgical treatment in the univariate analysis were length of stay (short vs. long; tĀ =Ā āˆ’2.267, pĀ =Ā 0.026), department of admission (emergency room vs. outpatient department; Ļ‡2Ā =Ā 7.459, pĀ =Ā 0.006), number of live births (nulliparous vs. multiparous; Ļ‡2Ā =Ā 18.202, pĀ =Ā 0.001), and C-reactive protein (CRP) level (high vs. low; tĀ =Ā āˆ’2.250, pĀ =Ā 0.028). Logistic regression analysis performed to determine influential factors for surgical treatment showed that the operation odds ratio of three to four live births versus no live births was 33.995 (pĀ =Ā 0.043) and that of two live births versus no live births was 13.598 (pĀ =Ā 0.026).ConclusionPatients with TOA who underwent surgery had a longer duration of hospitalization. Among the patients who underwent surgical intervention, those admitted to the emergency room had higher CRP levels and were more likely to be multiparous

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the predominant gastrointestinal malignancy and the leading cause of cancer death. The identification of genes related to CRC is important for the development of successful therapies and earlier diagnosis.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Molecular analysis of feces was evaluated as a potential method for CRC detection. Expression of a predicted protein with unknown function, KIAA0247, was found in feces evaluated using specific quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Its cellular function was then analyzed using immunofluorescent staining and the changes in the cell cycle in response to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) were assessed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Gastrointestinal tissues and peripheral blood lymphocytes ubiquitously expressed KIAA0247. 56 CRC patients fell into two group categories according to fecal KIAA0247 mRNA expression levels. The group with higher fecal KIAA0247 (<it>n </it>= 22; ā‰„ 0.4897) had a significantly greater five-year overall survival rate than the group with lower fecal KIAA0247 (<it>n </it>= 30; < 0.4897) (66.0 Ā± 11.6%; <it>p </it>= 0.035, log-rank test). Fecal expression of KIAA0247 inversely related to CRC tumor size (Kendall's tau-b = -0.202; <it>p </it>= 0.047). Immunofluorescent staining revealed that the cytoplasm of CRC cells evenly expresses KIAA0247 without 5-FU treatment, and KIAA0247 accumulates in the nucleus after 40 Ī¼M 5-FU treatment. In HCT116 p53<sup>-/- </sup>cells, which lack p53 cell cycle control, the proportion of cells in the G2/M phase was larger (13%) in KIAA0247-silent cells than in the respective shLuc control (10%) and KIAA0247-overexpressing cells (7%) after the addition of low dose (40 Ī¼M) 5-FU. Expression of three cyclin genes (cyclin A2, cyclin B1, and cyclin B2) also downregulated in the cells overexpressing KIAA0247.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This is the first description of a linkage between KIAA0247 and CRC. The study's data demonstrate overexpression of KIAA0247 associates with 5-FU therapeutic benefits, and also identify the clinical significance of fecal KIAA0247 in CRC.</p

    To evaluate the relationship between circulating adiponectin and insulin sensitivity in patients with hyperthyroid Graves&apos; disease, we studied 19 adult patients with this disease and 19 age-and sex-matched euthyroid controls. All hyperthyroid patients were treated with antithyroid drugs and were re-evaluated after thyroid function normalized. Before antithyroid treatment, the adiponectin plasma concentrations were not different comparing with those in control group. The adiponectin levels remained unchanged after treatment. The homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) in hyperthyroid group was higher before treatment than after treatment. There was no significant difference in serum glucose and insulin levels between hyperthyroid and control groups and in the hyperthyroid group before and after treatment. BMI-adjusted adiponectin levels were not different among three groups. On the other hand, BMI-adjusted insulin levels and HOMA-IR values were significantly decreased after management of hyperthyroidism. Pearson&apos;s correlation revealed that insulin and HOMA-IR values positively correlated with triiodothyronine (T3) and free thyroxine (FT4) levels. However, adiponectin did not correlate with T3, FT4, insulin, HOMA-IR and thyrotropin receptor autoantibody (TRAb) levels. In conclusion, insulin resistance associated with hyperthyroidism is not mediated by the levels of plasma adiponectin
