    Learning New Facts From Knowledge Bases With Neural Tensor Networks and Semantic Word Vectors

    Knowledge bases provide applications with the benefit of easily accessible, systematic relational knowledge but often suffer in practice from their incompleteness and lack of knowledge of new entities and relations. Much work has focused on building or extending them by finding patterns in large unannotated text corpora. In contrast, here we mainly aim to complete a knowledge base by predicting additional true relationships between entities, based on generalizations that can be discerned in the given knowledgebase. We introduce a neural tensor network (NTN) model which predicts new relationship entries that can be added to the database. This model can be improved by initializing entity representations with word vectors learned in an unsupervised fashion from text, and when doing this, existing relations can even be queried for entities that were not present in the database. Our model generalizes and outperforms existing models for this problem, and can classify unseen relationships in WordNet with an accuracy of 75.8%

    Cybersecurity Consideration in Process Hazard Analysis

    PresentationTraditional process hazard analysis (PHA), such as Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) studies, typically includes a systematic assessment of initiating events and consequences affecting process facilities. Relationships among initiating events, safeguards, and consequences are evaluated in depth, but such evaluation is generally based on unintentional causes such as human error or some unexpected failure of equipment, instrumentation, controls, or safeguards. As the process industry evolves toward greater reliance on and integration with information technology, it is critical to also consider malicious and intentional disruption of process operations by parties who exploit the enhanced capabilities and integration of modern communication with process controls and operations. This paper discusses the significance of considering cybersecurity threats during a PHA/HAZOP. A step-by-step and systematic technique is presented to show how a PHA team could assess the vulnerability of a system or facility to potential cyber threats, analyze adequacy of safeguards, and develop necessary countermeasures to resist cyberattacks. A typical refinery or chemical plant can have thousands of signals that are connected to a Distributed Control System (DCS) to ensure safe and smooth process operation. This arrangement could inadvertently present multiple pathways for malicious parties to intervene by manipulating signals or disrupting communications, potentially leading to severe process hazards and consequences such as a fire, explosion and fatality. Not only does incorporating cybersecurity in a PHA/HAZOP help identify the vulnerability of your system or facility, it could also be used to prioritize limited resources to ensure critical vulnerabilities are mitigated in a timely and efficient manner. The application of this technique will be demonstrated using case examples

    Exercise for falls prevention in community-dwelling older adults: Trial and participant characteristics, interventions and bias in clinical trials from a systematic review

    IntroductionThere is strong evidence that exercise prevents falls in community-dwelling older people. This review summarises trial and participant characteristics, intervention contents and study quality of 108 randomised trials evaluating exercise interventions for falls prevention in community-dwelling older adults.MethodsMEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL and three other databases sourced randomised controlled trials of exercise as a single intervention to prevent falls in community-dwelling adults aged 60+ years to May 2018.Results108 trials with 146 intervention arms and 23 407 participants were included. Trials were undertaken in 25 countries, 90% of trials had predominantly female participants and 56% had elevated falls risk as an inclusion criterion. In 72% of trial interventions attendance rates exceeded 50% and/or 75% of participants attended 50% or more sessions. Characteristics of the trials within the three types of intervention programme that reduced falls were: (1) balance and functional training interventions lasting on average 25 weeks (IQR 16–52), 39% group based, 63% individually tailored; (2) Tai Chi interventions lasting on average 20 weeks (IQR 15–43), 71% group based, 7% tailored; (3) programmes with multiple types of exercise lasting on average 26 weeks (IQR 12–52), 54% group based, 75% tailored. Only 35% of trials had low risk of bias for allocation concealment, and 53% for attrition bias.ConclusionsThe characteristics of effective exercise interventions can guide clinicians and programme providers in developing optimal interventions based on current best evidence. Future trials should minimise likely sources of bias and comply with reporting guidelines

    Outcome of Laparoscopic Live Donor Nephrectomy and Impact of Double Renal Arteries: Results From Two Transplant Centres

    ObjectiveLive donor kidney transplantation is consistently superior to deceased donor kidney transplantation. Laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (LDN) is increasingly accepted as a safe and preferred surgical option. To evaluate the outcome of LDN and the impact of multiple arteries, a retrospective review was conducted on patients in two transplant centres.MethodsFifty patients including eight with double vessels were studied. Standard left transperitoneal LDN was performed. Grafts including those with double vessels were prepared using the bench technique. Postoperative outcomes (up to 1 year) for donors and recipients were studied. The outcomes of recipients of a single or double vessel graft were compared.ResultsAll donors had an eventful recovery. No difference was found between the single and multiple vessels groups for operating time (168.21 ± 5.712 minutes vs. 197.50 ± 15.755 minutes) or hospital stay (3.21±0.165 days vs. 4.13±0.789 days). The recipient outcomes including hospital stay (10.17±0.596 days vs. 12.13 ± 1.797 days) and creatinine levels at day 7 (106.53 ± 5.583 μmol/L vs. 107.13 ± 11.857 μmol/L) and 1 year (120.21 ± 6.562 μmol/L vs. 124.75 ± 11.857 μmol/L) were similar. No ureteric stricture or graft loss was noted at 1-year follow-up. Recipient complications included lymphocoele (n = 2), haematoma (n = 3 with 2 requiring exploration), sepsis (n = 1), renal artery stenosis (n = 2 with 1 stented), repeated anastomosis (n = 1), and incisional hernia (n = 1). No differences were noted between the two groups.ConclusionOur results showed that overall donor morbidity rate was low, as reflected by the short hospital stay. Also, the overall parameters of the recipients were good. In particular, no ureteric stricture was noted, and graft survival was 100% at 1 year. The outcomes of the reconstructed group, despite the technical challenge, were similar to those of the single-vessel group
