Computer Science and Metaphysics: A Cross-Fertilization
Computational philosophy is the use of mechanized computational techniques to
unearth philosophical insights that are either difficult or impossible to find
using traditional philosophical methods. Computational metaphysics is
computational philosophy with a focus on metaphysics. In this paper, we (a)
develop results in modal metaphysics whose discovery was computer assisted, and
(b) conclude that these results work not only to the obvious benefit of
philosophy but also, less obviously, to the benefit of computer science, since
the new computational techniques that led to these results may be more broadly
applicable within computer science. The paper includes a description of our
background methodology and how it evolved, and a discussion of our new results.Comment: 39 pages, 3 figure
Mechanizing Principia Logico-Metaphysica in Functional Type Theory
Principia Logico-Metaphysica contains a foundational logical theory for
metaphysics, mathematics, and the sciences. It includes a canonical development
of Abstract Object Theory [AOT], a metaphysical theory (inspired by ideas of
Ernst Mally, formalized by Zalta) that distinguishes between ordinary and
abstract objects.
This article reports on recent work in which AOT has been successfully
represented and partly automated in the proof assistant system Isabelle/HOL.
Initial experiments within this framework reveal a crucial but overlooked fact:
a deeply-rooted and known paradox is reintroduced in AOT when the logic of
complex terms is simply adjoined to AOT's specially-formulated comprehension
principle for relations. This result constitutes a new and important paradox,
given how much expressive and analytic power is contributed by having the two
kinds of complex terms in the system. Its discovery is the highlight of our
joint project and provides strong evidence for a new kind of scientific
practice in philosophy, namely, computational metaphysics.
Our results were made technically possible by a suitable adaptation of
Benzm\"uller's metalogical approach to universal reasoning by semantically
embedding theories in classical higher-order logic. This approach enables one
to reuse state-of-the-art higher-order proof assistants, such as Isabelle/HOL,
for mechanizing and experimentally exploring challenging logics and theories
such as AOT. Our results also provide a fresh perspective on the question of
whether relational type theory or functional type theory better serves as a
foundation for logic and metaphysics.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures; preprint of article with same title to appear in

Regulierung, Bankenaufsicht, Basel II, Finanzmarktkrise, Deutschland
Analytic Estimation of Region of Attraction of an LQR Controller for Torque Limited Simple Pendulum
Linear-quadratic regulators (LQR) are a well known and widely used tool in
control theory for both linear and nonlinear dynamics. For nonlinear problems,
an LQR-based controller is usually only locally viable, thus, raising the
problem of estimating the region of attraction (ROA). The need for good ROA
estimations becomes especially pressing for underactuated systems, as a failure
of controls might lead to unsafe and unrecoverable system states. Known
approaches based on optimization or sampling, while working well, might be too
slow in time critical applications and are hard to verify formally. In this
work, we propose a novel approach to estimate the ROA based on the analytic
solutions to linear ODEs for the torque limited simple pendulum. In simulation
and physical experiments, we compared our approach to a Lyapunov-sampling
baseline approach and found that our approach was faster to compute, while
yielding ROA estimations of similar phase space area.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, to be published in proceedings of 61st

The interleukin-6 -174promoter polymorphism is associated with long-term kidney allograft survival
The interleukin-6 -174promoter polymorphism is associated with long-term kidney allograft survival.BackgroundTh1-dependent effector mechanisms may be responsible for allograft rejection. Recently, interleukin-6 (IL-6) has been shown to antagonize CD4+ T cells to effector Th2 cells and, in the process, differentiate them into Th1 cells.MethodsTo assess the role of IL-6 in long-term allograft survival, 158 patients after first cadaveric kidney transplantation were analyzed for the biallelic –174G→C promoter polymorphism of the IL-6 gene.ResultsCarriers of the –174C-allele (genotype GC/CC) had an inferior three-year graft survival (71/104 = 68.3%; P = 0.0059) with a 3.7-fold increased relative risk of graft loss compared to carriers of the –174GG-genotype (48/54 = 88.9%). The –174GC/CC-genotype retained its negative impact on graft survival when other established prognostic factors and further cytokine polymorphisms (-308TNF-α, TGF-β1 codon 10 & 25, -592/-819/-1082IL-10 and +874IFN-γ) were considered simultaneously.ConclusionsSince the clinical impact on transplant outcome seems as important as matching for histocompatibility antigens, genotyping of the IL-6 -174polymorphism may offer a new method for identifying patients at increased risk of allograft loss

Predicting the Electrical Impedance of Rolling Bearings Using Machine Learning Methods
The present paper describes a measurement setup and a related prediction of the electrical impedance of rolling bearings using machine learning algorithms. The impedance of the rolling bearing is expected to be key in determining the state of health of the bearing, which is an essential component in almost all machines. In previous publications, the determination of the impedance of rolling bearings has already been advanced using analytical methods. Despite the improvements in accuracy achieved within the calculations, there are still discrepancies between the calculated and the measured impedance, leading to an approximately constant off-set value. This discrepancy motivates the machine learning approach introduced in this paper. It is shown that with the help of the data-driven methods the difference between analytical prediction and measurement is reduced to the order of up to 2% across the operational range analyzed so far. To introduce the context of the research shown, first the underlying physics of bearing impedance is presented. Subsequently different machine learning approaches are highlighted and compared with each other in terms of their prediction quality in the results part of this paper. As a further aspect, in addition to the prediction of the bearing impedance, it is investigated whether the rotational speed present at the bearing can be predicted from the frequency spectrum of the impedance using order analysis methods which is independent from the force prediction accuracy. The background to this is that, if the prediction quality is sufficiently high, the additional use of speed sensors could be omitted in future investigations
