    The role of word frequency and morpho-orthography in agreement processing

    Agreement attraction in comprehension (when an ungrammatical verb is read quickly if preceded by a feature-matching local noun) is well described by a cue-based retrieval framework. This suggests a role for lexical retrieval in attraction. To examine this, we manipulated two probabilistic factors known to affect lexical retrieval: local noun word frequency and morpho-orthography (agreement morphology realised with or without –s endings) in a self-paced reading study. Noun number and word frequency affected noun and verb region reading times, with higher-frequency words not eliciting attraction. Morpho-orthography impacted verb processing but not attraction: atypical plurals led to slower verb reading times regardless of verb number. Exploratory individual difference analyses further underscore the importance of lexical retrieval dynamics in sentence processing. This provides evidence that agreement operates via a cue-based retrieval mechanism over lexical representations that vary in their strength and association to number features

    Inelastic neutron scattering study on the resonance mode in an optimally doped superconductor LaFeAsO0.92_{0.92}F0.08_{0.08}

    An optimally doped iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO0.92_{0.92}F0.08_{0.08} with Tc=29T_c = 29 K has been studied by inelastic powder neutron scattering. The magnetic excitation at Q=1.15Q=1.15 \AA−1^{-1} is enhanced below TcT_c, leading to a peak at Eres∼13E_{res}\sim13 meV as the resonance mode, in addition to the formation of a gap at low energy below the crossover energy Δc∼10meV\Delta_{c}\sim10 meV. The peak energy at Q=1.15Q=1.15 \AA−1^{-1} corresponds to 5.2kBTc5.2 k_B T_c in good agreement with the other values of resonance mode observed in the various iron-based superconductors, even in the high-TcT_c cuprates. Although the phonon density of states has a peak at the same energy as the resonance mode in the present superconductor, the QQ-dependence is consistent with the resonance being of predominately magnetic origin.Comment: 4 pages, 5 Postscript figure

    Near Sharp Strichartz estimates with loss in the presence of degenerate hyperbolic trapping

    We consider an nn-dimensional spherically symmetric, asymptotically Euclidean manifold with two ends and a codimension 1 trapped set which is degenerately hyperbolic. By separating variables and constructing a semiclassical parametrix for a time scale polynomially beyond Ehrenfest time, we show that solutions to the linear Schr\"odiner equation with initial conditions localized on a spherical harmonic satisfy Strichartz estimates with a loss depending only on the dimension nn and independent of the degeneracy. The Strichartz estimates are sharp up to an arbitrary β>0\beta>0 loss. This is in contrast to \cite{ChWu-lsm}, where it is shown that solutions satisfy a sharp local smoothing estimate with loss depending only on the degeneracy of the trapped set, independent of the dimension

    Doping Dependence of Spin Dynamics in Electron-Doped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2

    The spin dynamics in single crystal, electron-doped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 has been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering over the full range from undoped to the overdoped regime. We observe damped magnetic fluctuations in the normal state of the optimally doped compound (x=0.06) that share a remarkable similarity with those in the paramagnetic state of the parent compound (x=0). In the overdoped superconducting compound (x=0.14), magnetic excitations show a gap-like behavior, possibly related to a topological change in the hole Fermi surface (Lifshitz transition), while the imaginary part of the spin susceptibility prominently resembles that of the overdoped cuprates. For the heavily overdoped, non-superconducting compound (x=0.24) the magnetic scattering disappears, which could be attributed to the absence of a hole Fermi-surface pocket observed by photoemission.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, published versio
