Folk Songs Of Ghana: The Mosomagor Song Book

    Get PDF
This project is focused on the traditional songs of Moscmagor, a village at the Eastern entrance to Kakum National Park. I was interested in learning to sing the songs, the meanings of the songs, as well as their histories and origins. I was also very interested in the singing techniques that are used, and how the singing of the songs is naturally effected by the fact that they have been learned within this oral culture. The fact that these songs are rarely written down gave me the idea of attempting to do so, using the Western process of notation. This gave rise to several interesting implications concerning rhythm and melody, as I will discuss later. The result of all of this is a sort of songbook, with the songs written in notation, along with their lyrics, etc. I have also chosen to discuss the structure and the function of the songs within Mosomagor, and within the realm of West Africa, specifically Ghana

Implications of a Northern Corridor on Soft Infrastructure in the North and Near North

Disparities in health care, education and employment, housing and social welfare have long been documented in Northern Canada. These disparities have been linked to colonialism, ineffective social policy, uneven development and the high costs of service delivery and infrastructure in northern regions. This literature review aims to present a comprehensive understanding of existing research on the current state of soft infrastructure and its deficits in Canada’s North and near-North regions. This scoping review contributes to a larger project led by the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy and their Northern Corridor Research Program, a project which aims to evaluate the establishment of permissible corridors in Canada. These corridors provide defined multi-modal rights-of-way with accompanying regulatory and governance structures. Specifically, the term “soft infrastructure,” for the purposes of this review, refers to health care, housing, education, employment, jobs training and emergency services. The implications of these deficits in terms of economic and social opportunities in northern regions are discussed in relation to current research. Additionally, the ways in which these deficits relate to current hard infrastructure assets and deficits are assessed based on the reviewed literature. Finally, the costs, benefits and opportunities associated with the proposed Canadian corridor with regards to soft infrastructure deficits and needs are addressed

Activating the Biological and Behavioral Immune Systems

Psychology recognizes two distinct facets of the immune system: the biological immune system (BIO), covering all processes of the typical immune system, and the behavioral immune system (BEH), a set of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral responses to environmental stimuli. Research on this dual immune system indicates that each is capable of influencing the other (Schaller & Park, 2011). For example, perception of illness in others can activate the sympathetic nervous system (Schaller, Miller, Gervais, Yager, & Chen, 2010). Furthermore, evidence suggests that these two systems are capable of influencing moral judgment (Inbar, Pizarro, & Bloom, 2008). This study aims to further the overall understanding of the BEH and the manner in which it influences the BIO. Participants were recruited from college psychology courses in exchange for extra credit. These participants completed questionnaires regarding moral judgments and illness perception either before or after engaging in a visual stimulus task in which participants were prompted to select a face from a set of four using 32 different sets of photographs, each exposed for only 50 milliseconds. One face in each set of four appeared to be sick or engaged in sick behavior (coughing or sneezing). Saliva samples were taken from each participant before and after the questionnaire and visual stimulus task to measure and compare the levels of cortisol. Participants detected “sick” faces significantly above chance. Unfortunately, participants’ cortisol levels could not be analyzed due to error in the cortisol assay process. The face detection task did not affect moral judgments. Our primary results indicate that pathogen threat is salient even when the individual cannot completely process or analyze the stimulus. This research has many implications for medical treatment and decision making processes. More research is necessary to understand how the physiological activities of the BIO alone affect the processes of the BEH

A Roadmap Towards Integrity: A President's Perspective Twenty Years On

In this session, I will share what prompted my original 2002-2003 study on student academic misconduct with Don McCabe, published in the Canadian Journal of Higher Education, and my reflections on what has transpired in the ensuing twenty years. Highlighting key observations from my more recent contributions (in Handbook of Academic Integrity and Academic Integrity in Canada: An Enduring and Essential Challenge), I will present a roadmap towards integrity, with implications for senior university administrators (as well as faculty and students), committed to strengthening the integrity of the academy

The Association of Water Quality Parameters, Geological Substrates and Periphyton Community Structure

This research was designed to understand the structure of epilithic diatom assemblage of a first-to-third order stream system which has minimal variance in nutrient concentration, but significant differences in geomorphological character. The primary objective was to determine the importance of geological substrate on the structure of the diatom assemblages. The second objective was to examine the effect of flow on these assemblages, and the third part of the research was to develop a seasonal model of temporal and spatial annual succession. The temporal and spatial models represent the effect of seasons, stream order, substrate characteristics, storm events, and periods of lesser flow on diatom assemblages. Also, a compilation of the diatoms reported in the Ozark Highlands is included along with a determination of the similarity of the diatom flora in the study reach on the Middle Fork of the White River and other regional streams

Academic Integrity in Canada: An Enduring and Essential Challenge

In this session, Dr. Julia Christensen Hughes and Dr. Sarah Elaine Eaton will reflect on academic integrity in Canada, synthesize their various contributions, and challenge future practice. Drawing from their book, Academic Integrity in Canada: An Enduring and Essential challenge, they will highlight their experience and insights, since the seminal work of Christensen Hughes and McCabe (2006), focusing on the enduring and essential challenge of building cultures and practices aligned with academic integrity in Canadian higher education today. Participants will gain insight into current challenges and strategies for supporting academic integrity in their own administrative and teaching and research practice
