Charmed Strange Pentaquarks in the Large Limit
The properties of pentaquarks containing a heavy anti-quark and strange
quarks are studied in the bound state picture. In the flavor SU(3) limit, there
are many pentaquark states with the same binding energy. When the SU(3)
symmetry breaking effects are included, however, three states become
particularly stable due to a ``Gell-Mann--Okubo mechanism''. They are the and states discussed by Lipkin, and a a previously
unstudied state. These states will have and
their masses are estimated. These states, if exist, may be seen in experiments
in the near future.Comment: 12 pages in REVTeX, no figure
THE NATURE OF TURBULENT KINETIC ENERGY IN A DEEP AND NARROW VALLEY UNDER CONVECTIVE (?) CONDITIONS
This contribution investigates the nature of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) in a steep and narrow Alpine valley under fair-weather summertime conditions. The Riviera Valley in southern Switzerland has been chosen for a detailed case study, in which the evaluation of aircraft data (obtained from the MAP-Riviera field campaign) is combined with the application of high-resolution (350 m) large-eddy simulations using the model ARPS. The simulations verify what has
already been observed on the basis of measurement data: TKE profiles scale surprisingly well if the convective velocity scale w٭ is obtained from the sun-exposed eastern slope rather than from the surface directly underneath the profiles considered. ARPS is then used to evaluate the TKE-budget equation, showing that, despite sunny conditions, wind shear is the dominant production mechanism. Therefore, the surface heat fluxes (and thus w٭) on the eastern slope do not determine the TKE evolution directly but rather, as we believe, indirectly via the interaction of thermally-driven crossvalley
and along-valley flow. Excellent correlations between w2٭ and the up-valley wind speed solidify this hypothesis
From Tetraquark to Hexaquark: A Systematic Study of Heavy Exotics in the Large Limit
A systematic study of multiquark exotics with one or heavy quarks in
the large limit is presented. By binding a chiral soliton to a heavy
meson, either a normal -quark baryon or an exotic -quark baryon
is obtained. By replacing the heavy quark with heavy antiquarks, exotic
-quark and -quark mesons are obtained. When , they are
just the normal triquark baryon , the exotic pentaquark baryon , tetraquark di-meson and the hexaquark
di-baryon respectively. Their
stabilities and decays are also discussed. In particular, it is shown that the
``heavy to heavy'' semileptonic decays are described by the Isgur--Wise form
factors of the normal baryons.Comment: 14 pages in REVTeX, no Figure
Analysis of Inelasticity Effect Due to Damage on Stress Distributions in Composite Laminates
A damage mechanics model characterizing damage behavior of composite materials proposed earlier by the authors is employed to analyze the damage effects on stress field near the free edge in symmetrically laminated graphite/epoxy composites of finite dimensions under umaxial tension. A quasi-three-dimensional finite element analy sis is developed for the present investigation. The results from the damaged and undam aged stress distributions of [0/90°]s, [90/0°]s, and [±45°] s laminates are compared and examined. The processes of initiation and development of damage zone in these composite laminates are also discussed.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/68869/2/10.1177_073168449301200805.pd

High speed synchrotron X-ray imaging studies of the ultrasound shockwave and enhanced flow during metal solidification processes
The highly dynamic behaviour of ultrasonic bubble implosion in liquid metal, the multiphase liquid metal flow containing bubbles and particles, and the interaction between ultrasonic waves and semisolid phases during solidification of metal were studied in situ using the complementary ultrafast and high speed synchrotron X-ray imaging facilities housed respectively at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory, US, and Diamond Light Source, UK. Real-time ultrafast X-ray imaging of 135,780 frames per second (fps) revealed that ultrasonic bubble implosion in a liquid Bi-8 wt. %Zn alloy can occur in a single wave period (30 kHz), and the effective region affected by the shockwave at implosion was 3.5 times the original bubble diameter. Furthermore, ultrasound bubbles in liquid metal move faster than the primary particles, and the velocity of bubbles is 70 ~ 100% higher than that of the primary particles present in the same locations close to the sonotrode. Ultrasound waves can very effectively create a strong swirling flow in a semisolid melt in less than one second. The energetic flow can detach solid particles from the liquid-solid interface and redistribute them back into the bulk liquid very effectively
Baryonium, tetra-quark state and glue-ball in large N_c QCD
From the large-N_c QCD point of view, baryonia, tetra-quark states, hybrids,
and glueballs are studied. The existence of these states is argued for. They
are constructed from baryons. In N_f=1 large N_c QCD, a baryonium is always
identical to a glueball with N_c valence gluons. The ground state 0^{-+}
glueball has a mass about 2450 MeV. f_0(1710) is identified as the lowest
0^{++} glueball. The lowest four-quark nonet should be f_0(1370), a_0(1450),
K^*_0(1430) and f_0(1500). Combining with the heavy quark effective theory,
spectra of heavy baryonia and heavy tetra-quark states are predicted. 1/N_c
corrections are discussed.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figure
Light-Front Approach for Heavy Pentaquark Transitions
Assuming the two diquark structure for the pentaquark state as advocated in
the Jaffe-Wilczek model, there exist exotic parity-even anti-sextet and
parity-odd triplet heavy pentaquark baryons. The theoretical estimate of
charmed and bottom pentaquark masses is quite controversial and it is not clear
whether the ground-state heavy pentaquark lies above or below the strong-decay
threshold. We study the weak transitions of heavy pentaquark states using the
light-front quark model. In the heavy quark limit, heavy-to-heavy pentaquark
transition form factors can be expressed in terms of three Isgur-Wise
functions: two of them are found to be normalized to unity at zero recoil,
while the third one is equal to 1/2 at the maximum momentum transfer, in
accordance with the prediction of the large-Nc approach or the quark model.
Therefore, the light-front model calculations are consistent with the
requirement of heavy quark symmetry. Numerical results for form factors and
Isgur-Wise functions are presented. Decay rates of the weak decays Theta_b+ to
Theta_c0 pi+ (rho+), Theta_c0 to Theta+ pi- (rho-), Sigma'_{5b}+ to
Sigma'_{5c}0 pi+ (rho+) and Sigma'_{5c}0 to N_8+ pi- (rho-) with Theta_Q,
Sigma'_{5Q} and N_8 being the heavy anti-sextet, heavy triplet and light
octet pentaquarks, respectively, are obtained. For weakly decaying Theta_b+ and
Theta_c0, the branching ratios of Theta_b+ to Theta_c0 pi+, Theta_c0 to Theta+
pi- are estimated to be at the level of 10^{-3} and a few percents,
respectively.Comment: 33 pages, 3 figures, version to be published in Phys. Rev.
Three-body structure of low-lying 18Ne states
We investigate to what extent 18Ne can be descibed as a three-body system
made of an inert 16O-core and two protons. We compare to experimental data and
occasionally to shell model results. We obtain three-body wave functions with
the hyperspherical adiabatic expansion method. We study the spectrum of 18Ne,
the structure of the different states and the predominant transition strengths.
Two 0+, two 2+, and one 4+ bound states are found where they are all known
experimentally. Also one 3+ close to threshold is found and several negative
parity states, 1-, 3-, 0-, 2-, most of them bound with respect to the 16O
excited 3- state. The structures are extracted as partial wave components, as
spatial sizes of matter and charge, and as probability distributions.
Electromagnetic decay rates are calculated for these states. The dominating
decay mode for the bound states is E2 and occasionally also M1.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures (version to appear in EPJA
Ionization degree of the electron-hole plasma in semiconductor quantum wells
The degree of ionization of a nondegenerate two-dimensional electron-hole
plasma is calculated using the modified law of mass action, which takes into
account all bound and unbound states in a screened Coulomb potential.
Application of the variable phase method to this potential allows us to treat
scattering and bound states on the same footing. Inclusion of the scattering
states leads to a strong deviation from the standard law of mass action. A
qualitative difference between mid- and wide-gap semiconductors is
demonstrated. For wide-gap semiconductors at room temperature, when the bare
exciton binding energy is of the order of T, the equilibrium consists of an
almost equal mixture of correlated electron-hole pairs and uncorrelated free
carriers.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figure
