Grapevine virus A and grapevine virus D are serologically distantly related
Grapevine trichovirus A (GVA), B (GVB), and D (GVD) are not serologically related as ascertained by ELISA and IEM tests using polyclonal antisera A study to investigate in detail their serological relationships was carried out with a larger number of reagents, including monoclonal antibodies (MAbs), and serological techniques (ELISA, IEM, tissue blot, Western blot). The results show that (i) polyclonal antisera to GVA, GVB and GVD cross-reacted in Western blot with all antigens; (ii) one out of 4 MAbs to GVA (MAb PA3.B9) reacted in ELISA, Western blot and tissue blot with the homologous virus and GVD but not with GVB. It is concluded that GVA, GVB and GVD are serologically distantly related and that the single antigenic determinant common to GVA and GVD is likely to be a cryptotope
Some properties of a hitherto undescribed filamentous virus of the grapevine
An apparently new, non mechanically-transmissible clostero-like virus, for which the name ''grapevine leafroll-associated virus 7('') (GLRaV-7) is proposed, was found in Albanian grapevine accessions. Virus particles were filamentous, had conspicuous cross banding and a length of 1500-1700 nm. Virions had coat protein subunits with an estimated M(r) of ca. 37 kDa and a ssRNA genome with size of ca. 19.5 kb as deduced from the estimate of dsRNA (ca. 19.5 kbp) extracted from grapevine tissues. A virus-specific antiserum was raised, which decorated virions at a dilution of 1:1000. This antiserum did not recognize particles of any of the six grapevine leafroll-associated clostero-like viruses (GLRaV-1 to -6) known to date, nor of grapevine trichovirus A (GVA) and B (GVB). Grapevine indicators graft-inoculated with material from accessions containing GLRaV-7 reacted with mild leafroll-like symptoms. In a survey in which 2226 vines from 30 different countries were examined by ELISA, GLRaV-7 was found in 141 plants from Albania, Greece, Hungary, Egypt, and Italy
The pivotal role of cholesterol absorption inhibitors in the management of dyslipidemia
Elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol is associated with a significantly increased risk of coronary heart disease. Ezetimibe is the first member of a new class of selective cholesterol absorption inhibitors. It impairs the intestinal reabsorption of both dietary and hepatically excreted biliary cholesterol. Ezetimibe is an effective and safe agent for lowering LDL-C and non HDL-C. Short term clinical trials have established the role of ezetimibe monotherapy and its use in combination with statins. Furthermore, ezetimibe and statin combination therapy increased the percentage of patients who achieved their LDL-C treatment goal. Studies using surrogate markers of atherosclerosis have suggested a possible role of ezetimibe in combating atherosclerosis. Ezetimibe provides an effective therapeutic strategy for the management of homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) and sitosterolemia. The lack of outcomes and long term safety data is attributed to the relatively recent introduction of this medication
Investigating Potential Biomarkers in Autism Spectrum Disorder
Background: Early identification and treatment of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) improves outcomes, but specific evidence needed to individualize treatment recommendations is lacking. Biomarkers that could be routinely measured within the clinical setting could potentially transform clinical care for patients with ASD. This demonstration project employed collection of biomarker data during regular autism specialty clinical visits and explored the relationship of biomarkers with clinical ASD symptoms.
Methods: Eighty-three children with ASD, aged 5-10 years, completed a multi-site feasibility study integrating the collection of biochemical (blood serotonin, urine melatonin sulfate excretion) and clinical (head circumference, dysmorphology exam, digit ratio, cognitive and behavioral function) biomarkers during routine ASD clinic visits. Parents completed a demographic survey and the Aberrant Behavior Checklist-Community. Cognitive function was determined by record review. Data analysis utilized Wilcoxon two-sample tests and Spearman correlations.
Results: Participants were 82% male, 63% White, 19% Hispanic, with a broad range of functioning. Group means indicated hyperserotonemia. In a single regression analysis adjusting for race and median household income, higher income was associated with higher levels of blood serotonin and urine melatonin sulfate excretion levels (p = 0.004 and p = 0.04, respectively). Melatonin correlated negatively with age (p = 0.048) and reported neurologic problems (p = 0.02). Dysmorphic status correlated with higher reported stereotyped behavior (p = 0.02) and inappropriate speech (p = 0.04).
Conclusion: This demonstration project employed collection of multiple biomarkers, allowed for examination of associations between biochemical and clinical measures, and identified several findings that suggest direction for future studies. This clinical research model has promise for integrative biomarker research in individuals with complex, heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorders such as ASD

The impact of prior platinum therapy on survival in patients with metastatic urothelial cancer receiving vinflunine
Background: A phase III trial demonstrated an overall survival advantage with the addition of vinflunine to best supportive care (BSC) in platinum-refractory advanced urothelial cancer. We subsequently examined the impact of an additional 2 years of survival follow-up and evaluated the influence of first-line platinum therapy on survival. Methods: The 357 eligible patients from the phase III study were categorised into two cohorts depending on prior cisplatin treatment: cisplatin or non-cisplatin. Survival was calculated using the Kaplan–Meier method. Results: The majority had received prior cisplatin (70.3%). Survival was higher in the cisplatin group (HR: 0.76; CI 95% 0.58–0.99; P=0.04) irrespective of treatment arm. Multivariate analysis including known prognostic factors (liver involvement, haemoglobin, performance status) and prior platinum administration did not show an independent effect of cisplatin. Vinflunine reduced the risk of death by 24% in the cisplatin-group (HR: 0.76; CI 95% 0.58–0.99; P=0.04) and by 35% in non-cisplatin patients (HR: 0.65; CI 95% 0.41–1.04; P=0.07). Interpretation: Differences in prognostic factors between patients who can receive prior cisplatin and those who cannot may explain the survival differences in patients who undergo second line therapy. Prior cisplatin administration did not diminish the subsequent benefit of vinflunine over BSC
The potential direct economic impact and private management costs of an invasive alien species:Xylella fastidiosa on Lebanese wine grapes
Since its outbreak in 2013 in Italy, the harmful bacterium Xylella fastidiosa has continued to spread through-out the Euro-Mediterranean basin and, more recently, in the Middle East region. Xylella fastidiosa subsp. fastidiosa is the causal agent of Pierce’s disease on grapevines. At present, this alien subspecies has not been reported in Lebanon but if this biological invader was to spread with no cost-effective and sustainable management, it would put Lebanese vineyards at a certain level of risk. In the absence of an Xylella fastidiosa subsp. fastidiosa outbreak, the gross revenue generated by Lebanese wine growers is estimated as close to US 11 million for an average recovery period of4 years, to around US853 per potentially infected hectare. For a recovery period of 4 years, the aggregate estimated additional cost would reach US-4046/ha. Furthermore, additional work will be needed to estimate the public costs of an Xylella fastidiosa subsp. fastidiosa outbreak in Lebanon. The observed costs in this study support the concerned policy makers and stakeholders to implement a set of reduction management options against Xylella fastidiosa subsp. fastidiosa at both national and wine growers’ levels. This re-emerging alien biota should not be neglected in this country. This understanding of thepotential direct economic impact of Xylella fastidiosa subsp. fastidiosa and the private management costs can also benefit further larger-scale studies covering other potential infection areas and plant hosts
Universality classes in nonequilibrium lattice systems
This work is designed to overview our present knowledge about universality
classes occurring in nonequilibrium systems defined on regular lattices. In the
first section I summarize the most important critical exponents, relations and
the field theoretical formalism used in the text. In the second section I
briefly address the question of scaling behavior at first order phase
transitions. In section three I review dynamical extensions of basic static
classes, show the effect of mixing dynamics and the percolation behavior. The
main body of this work is given in section four where genuine, dynamical
universality classes specific to nonequilibrium systems are introduced. In
section five I continue overviewing such nonequilibrium classes but in coupled,
multi-component systems. Most of the known nonequilibrium transition classes
are explored in low dimensions between active and absorbing states of
reaction-diffusion type of systems. However by mapping they can be related to
universal behavior of interface growth models, which I overview in section six.
Finally in section seven I summarize families of absorbing state system
classes, mean-field classes and give an outlook for further directions of

Detection by tissue printing hybridization of Pome fruit viroids in the mediterranean basin
Available data on the incidence and biodiversity of pome fruit viroids in the Mediterranean basin are limited. Before starting a research survey to fill this gap, a tissue-printing hydridization (TPH) method to detect Apple scar skin viroid (ASSVd), Pear blister canker viroid (PBCVd) and Apple dimple fruit viroid (ADFVd) has been developed and validated. Afterward, TPH was used in large-scale indexing of pome fruit viroids in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Malta, Lebanon and Turkey. A total of about 1,000 trees was randomly collected and tested. Positive results obtained by TPH were confirmed by at least one additional detection method (RT-PCR and/or Northern-blot hybridization) and viroids were finally identified by sequencing full-length cDNA clones. PBCVd was detected in 13%, 12.4% and 5.4% of the tested pear trees in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Malta and Turkey, respectively, showing a wider diffusion of this viroid than expected. In contrast, ASSVd was never detected and ADFVd was only found in symptomatic trees (cv. Starking Delicious) in Lebanon, confirming a restricted presence of these viroids in the Mediterranean basin. Altogether, these data support the use of TPH as an easy and valuable tool for exploring pome fruit viroid spread.
