    Early Childhood Teachers’ Perception of the Professional Self and In Relation to the Early Childhood Communities

    Early childhood teachers face many challenges as they interact with children, their parents, fellow teachers and the early childhood community. The responsibility to meet the needs of a diverse group of people is critical to the teacher’s development as a professional. This paper discusses the quantitative findings of a survey that examined the perceptions of the professional self of early childhood teachers. The population sample comprised of 88 early childhood teachers in a part-time undergraduate early childhood education programme with at least 2 years of teaching experience. Factor analysis was applied to identify and explore six factors of early childhood teachers’ sense of professional self. The study found that participants rated themselves significantly lower in the latent variable of Professional Self with EC Communities and that the more experienced early childhood teachers rated themselves significantly higher

    A Values, Skills and Knowledge Framework for Initial Teacher Preparation Programmes

    The purpose of this paper is to introduce an integrated values, skills and knowledge (VSK) framework for initial teacher preparation programmes. The VSK framework articulated, in broad terms, the desired skills and knowledge components for beginning teachers, with the underlying core values permeating the programmes. The paper has two parts, the first of which details the development as well as the conceptual underpinning of the VSK framework. Part two, through a programme evaluation, discusses the validity and reliability of items developed through the VSK framework to measure the values, skills and knowledge that student teachers perceived through their initial teacher preparation programme

    Teachers\u27 English communication skills: Using IELTS to measure competence of graduates from a Singaporean teacher education program

    Possessing strong communication skills is essential in contributing to effective teaching. English language proficiency has become an important issue in teacher education in Singapore. This paper investigates graduating student teachers’ English language proficiency, as measured by IELTS tests scores, of graduating EL student teachers. The paper considers what teachers need to know about the English language given that English has been the medium of instruction (MoI) for Singapore schools since 1987. Given such a context, English language proficiency is an important consideration in the preparation of pre-service teachers in Singapore. Implications for additional training and preparation in language skills are also proposed

    Urine Specimens from Pregnant and Nonpregnant Women Inhibitory to Amplification of \u3cem\u3eChlamydia trachomatis\u3c/em\u3e Nucleic Acid by PCR, Ligase Chain Reaction, and Transcription-Mediated Amplification: Identification of Urinary Substances Associated with Inhibition and Removal of Inhibitory Activity

    The presence of endogenous amplification inhibitors in urine may produce false-negative results for the detection of Chlamydia trachomatis nucleic acids by tests such as PCR, ligase chain reaction (LCR), and transcription-mediated amplification (TMA). Consecutive urine specimens from 101 pregnant women and 287 nonpregnant women submitted for urinalysis were processed for C. trachomatis detection. Aliquots were spiked with the equivalent of one C. trachomatis elementary body and were tested by three commercial assays: AMPLICOR CT/NG, Chlamydia LCX, and Chlamydia TMA. The prevalence of inhibitors resulting in complete inhibition of amplification was 4.9% for PCR, 2.6% for LCR, and 7.5% for TMA. In addition, all three assays were partially inhibited by additional urine specimens. Only PCR was more often inhibited by urine from pregnant women than by urine from nonpregnant women (9.9 versus 3.1%; P = 0.011). A complete urinalysis including dipstick and a microscopic examination was performed. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the following substances were associated with amplification inhibition: beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (odd ratio [OR], 3.3) and crystals (OR, 3.3) for PCR, nitrites for LCR (OR, 14.4), and hemoglobin (OR, 3.3), nitrites (OR, 3.3), and crystals (OR, 3.3) for TMA. Aliquots of each inhibitory urine specimen were stored at 4 and -70°C and a dilution of 1:10 (84% for PCR, 100% for LCR, and 92% for TMA). Five urine specimens (three for PCR and two for TMA) required phenol-chloroform extraction to remove inhibitors. The results indicate that the prevalence of nucleic acid amplification inhibitors in female urine is different for each technology, that this prevalence may be predicted by the presence of urinary factors, and that storage and dilution remove most of the inhibitors

    Beginning Teachers’ Perceptions of their Pedagogical Knowledge and Skills in Teaching: A Three Year Study

    The purpose of this paper is to investigate the beginning teachers’ perceptions of pedagogical knowledge and skills in teaching in Singapore. Data was collected from the beginning teachers at three time points: the exit point of the teacher education programme, the end of their first year and third year of teaching. In this three year study, the focus is to examine the beginning teachers’ perceptions of their development in the following teaching related factors: lesson planning, classroom management and instructional strategies. The results showed that beginning teachers’ pedagogical knowledge and skills increased significantly, but at different rates, in all three factors at the end of their third year of teaching. It suggested that learning to teach is an on-going process that begins from the pre-service teacher education programme and continues into the initial three years of teaching

    A Comparison of Perceptions of Knowledge and Skills Held by Primary and Secondary Teachers: From the Entry to Exit of Their Preservice Programme

    The purpose of this study was to investigate if there were differences in the levels of pedagogical knowledge and skills as perceived by the student teachers who were enrolled in the Primary and the Secondary Post Graduate Diploma in Education programme at the National Institute of Education in Singapore. 170 Primary and 426 Secondary student teachers participated in the study. The results showed that there were no significant differences at the beginning of the programme between the two cohorts. However, there were significant differences between the two groups at the end of programme, with the Primary student teachers tending to perceive themselves as gaining more pedagogical knowledge and skills by the end of their initial teacher preparation programme than the Secondary student teachers

    Age-related changes in murine myometrial transcript profile are mediated by exposure to the female sex hormones.

    In humans, the risk of operative first delivery increases linearly with maternal age. We previously hypothesized that prolonged, cyclical, prepregnancy exposure to estrogen and progesterone contributes to uterine aging. Here, we test this hypothesis. Myometrium was obtained from four groups of virgin mice: (i) 10- to 12-week- and 28- to 30-week-old mice; (ii) 10- to 12-week- and 38- to 40-week-old mice; (iii) 38-week-old mice that had an ovariectomy or sham operation early in life; (iv) 38-week-old mice that had been treated with progesterone or vehicle containing implants from 8 to 36 weeks. Transcript profiling was carried out using Affymetrix Gene ST 1.1 arrays, and data were normalized. We identified 60 differentially regulated transcripts associated with advancing age (group 1). We validated these changes in group 2 (P for overlap = 5.8 × 10(-46) ). Early ovariectomy prevented the age-related changes in myometrial transcript profile. Similarly, progesterone-mediated long-term ovarian suppression prevented the age-related changes in myometrial transcript profile. Interferon regulatory factor 7 (Irf7) mRNA was regulated by age and hormonal exposure, and was identified as a predicted regulator of the other differentially expressed transcripts by both promoter sequence and canonical pathway activation analysis (P = 8.47 × 10(-5) and P < 10(-10) , respectively). Immunohistochemistry demonstrated IRF7 in both mouse and human myometrium. We conclude the following: (i) Myometrial aging in mice is associated with reproducible changes in transcript profile; (ii) these changes can be prevented by interventions which inhibit cyclical changes in the female sex hormones; and (iii) IRF7 may be an important regulator of myometrial function and aging.This work was supported by the NIHR Cambridge Comprehensive Biomedical Research Centre, Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust and the Evelyn Trust.This is the final version of the article.     Age at menarche and the risk of operative delivery.

    OBJECTIVES: We sought to evaluate the impact of later menarche on the risk of operative delivery. POPULATION: We studied 38,069 eligible women (first labors at term with a singleton infant in a cephalic presentation) from the Norwegian Mothers and Child Cohort Study. The main exposures were the age at menarche and the duration of the interval between menarche and the first birth. METHODS: Poisson's regression with a robust variance estimator. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Operative delivery, defined as emergency cesarean or assisted vaginal delivery (ventouse extraction or forceps). RESULTS: A 5 year increase in age at menarche was associated with a reduced risk of operative delivery (risk ratio [RR] 0.84, 95%CI 0.78, 0.89; p < .001). Adjustment for the age at first birth slightly strengthened the association (RR 0.79, 95%CI 0.74, 0.84; p < .001). However, the association was lost following adjustment for the menarche to birth interval (RR 0.99, 95%CI 0.93, 1.06; p = .81). A 5 years increase in menarche to birth interval was associated with an increased risk of operative delivery (RR 1.26, 95%CI 1.23, 1.28; p < .001). This was not materially affected by adjustment for an extensive series of maternal characteristics (RR 1.23, 95%CI 1.20, 1.25; p < .001). CONCLUSIONS: Later menarche reduces the risk of an operative first birth through shortening the menarche to birth interval. This observation is consistent with the hypothesis that the pattern and/or duration of prepregnancy exposure of the uterus to estrogen and progesterone contributes to uterine aging

    Morquio-like dysostosis multiplex presenting with neuronopathic features is a distinct GLB1-related phenotype

    Background Morquio B disease (MBD) is a distinct GLB1-related dysostosis multiplex presenting a mild phenocopy of GALNS-related Morquio A disease. Previously reported cases from European countries carry the W273L variant on at least one GLB1 allele and exhibit a pure skeletal phenotype (pure MBD). Only a minority of MBD cases have been described with additional neuronopathic findings (MBD plus). Objectives and Methods With the aim to further describe patterns of MBD-related dysostosis multiplex, we analyzed clinical, biochemical, and genetic features in 17 cases with GLB1-related dysostosis multiplex living and diagnosed in Brazil. Results About 14 of the 17 individuals had three or more skeletal findings characteristic of Morquio syndrome. Two had no additional neuronopathic features (pure MBD) and 12 exhibited additional neuronopathic features (MBD plus). Three of the 17 cases had mild dysostosis without distinct features of MBD. Seven of the 12 MBD plus patients had signs of spinal cord compression (SCC), as a result of progressive spinal vertebral dysostosis. There was an age-dependent increase in the number of skeletal findings and in the severity of growth impairment. GLB1 mutation analysis was completed in 10 of the 14 MBD patients. T500A occurred in compound heterozygosity in 8 of the 19 alleles. Conclusion Our study extends the phenotypic spectrum of GLB1-related conditions by describing a cohort of patients with MBD and GM1-gangliosidosis (MBD plus). Targeting the progressive nature of the skeletal manifestations in the development of new therapies for GLB1-related conditions is warranted

    Smoking, season, and detection of chlamydia pneumoniae DNA in clinically stable COPD patients

    BACKGROUND: The prevalence and role of Chlamydia pneumoniae in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remain unclear. METHODS: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were obtained from 100 outpatients with smoking-related, clinically stable COPD, and induced sputum was obtained in 62 patients. RESULTS: Patients had mean age (standard deviation) of 65.8 (10.7) years, mean forced expiratory volume in one second of 1.34 (0.61) L, and 61 (61.0%) were male. C. pneumoniae nucleic acids were detected by nested polymerase chain reaction in 27 (27.0%). Current smoking (odds ratio {OR} = 2.6, 95% confidence interval {CI}: 1.1, 6.6, P = 0.04), season (November to April) (OR = 3.6, 95% CI: 1.4, 9.2, P = 0.007), and chronic sputum production (OR = 6.4, 95% CI: 1.8, 23.2, P = 0.005) were associated with detection of C. pneumoniae DNA. CONCLUSIONS: Prospective studies are needed to examine the role of C. pneumoniae nucleic acid detection in COPD disease symptoms and progression
