    Anthropometric Measurement of Patients Admitted to an Intensive Care Unit

    Background Visual estimation is the usual method that many healthcare professional use to estimate the body weight of patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but this method has been shown to be significantly inaccurate. This study aimed to explores the feasibility of using fibula length to estimate the acute body weight of patients admitted to an ICU. Methods The study collected all ICU records in which patient’s body weight was estimated by the equation: Males: 153.1 – (0.26 x age) – 11 + (1.05 x fibular length) Females: 153.1 – (0.26 x age) – 22 + (1.05 x fibular length). The body weight(BW) then estimated by: BW= 20 x [estimated body height (in metres)]2. The degree of agreement between the estimated body weight by anthropometric measurement methods and the actual recorded body weight in the patient’s medical record within the four weeks immediately before ICU admission were assessed by the Bland-Altman plot. Results Paired sample t-tests showed there were statistically significant differences between the patient’s estimated and actual height and weight (p-value = 0.0001 for both). Conclusions The study found the use of fibula length alone had a similar percentage of bias when compared with visual estimation by healthcare professionals to estimate the actual body weight of the patients admitted to ICU.published_or_final_versio

    Continuum modeling approach to the spatial analysis of air quality and housing location choice

    Today, air pollution is a great issue, and the transport sector is an important emission source. In this study, we present an integrated land use, transport, and environment model in which transport-related pollutants are assumed to influence people's housing location choices, and a continuum modeling approach is applied. The pollutants generated by the transport sector are dispersed by the wind and they affect air quality. The air quality changes people's housing choices, which in turn changes their travel behavior. We assume that the road users are continuously distributed over the city, that the road network is relatively dense, and that this network can be approximated as a continuum. The total demand is categorized into several classes, and the modeled region contains several subdistricts. People who live in different subdistricts or who belong to different classes of commuters are assumed to have different perceptions of travel time, air quality, and the housing provision–demand relationship. The finite element method and the Newton–Raphson algorithm are adopted to solve this problem, and a numerical valuation is given to illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed model.postprin

    A novel dual-layer bicomponent electrospun nanofibrous membrane for desalination by direct contact membrane distillation

    In this study, a bicomponent nanofibrous composite membrane was fabricated by electrospinning and was tested for desalination by direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD). The nanofibrous membrane was composed of a dual-layered structure of poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PH) nanofibers and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) microfibers. Morphological characterization showed slightly beaded cylindrical PH nanofibers with porosity of about 90%. The contact angles of PH and PAN nano/microfibers were 150° and 100°, respectively. The nanofibrous membranes were tested by DCMD and a high water flux of 45 and 30Lm-2h-1 was obtained for distilled water and 35gL-1 NaCl solutions as feed, respectively using DL2 membrane (i.e., 25/75 PH/PAN thickness ratio). The present dual-layer membrane showed better flux performance compared to a commercial flat-sheet membrane. The results suggest the potential of the dual-layer nanofibrous membrane for DCMD applications. © 2014 Elsevier B.V

    A predictive continuum dynamic user-optimal model for a polycentric urban city

    A predictive continuum dynamic user-optimal model is extended to investigate the traffic equilibrium problem for a polycentric urban city with multiple central business districts (CBDs). The road network within the city is assumed to be dense and can be viewed as a continuum in which travellers can choose their routes in a two-dimensional space. Travellers are assumed to choose their route to minimise the actual total cost to the destination (i.e. the CBD). The model consists of two parts: the conservation law part and the Hamilton–Jacobi part. The finite volume method is used to solve each part on unstructured meshes. Because the two parts are closely interconnected and have different initial times, solving the model can be treated as a fixed-point problem, which is solved using a self-adaptive method of successive averages. Numerical experiments for an urban city with two CBDs are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the model and the numerical algorithm.postprin

    Fouling and its control in membrane distillation-A review

    © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Membrane distillation (MD) is an emerging thermally-driven technology that poses a lot of promise in desalination, and water and wastewater treatment. Developments in membrane design and the use of alternative energy sources have provided much improvement in the viability of MD for different applications. However, fouling of membranes is still one of the major issues that hounds the long-term stability performance of MD. Membrane fouling is the accumulation of unwanted materials on the surface or inside the pores of a membrane that results to a detrimental effect on the overall performance of MD. If not addressed appropriately, it could lead to membrane damage, early membrane replacement or even shutdown of operation. Similar with other membrane separation processes, fouling of MD is still an unresolved problem. Due to differences in membrane structure and design, and operational conditions, the fouling formation mechanism in MD may be different from those of pressure-driven membrane processes. In order to properly address the problem of fouling, there is a need to understand the fouling formation and mechanism happening specifically for MD. This review details the different foulants and fouling mechanisms in the MD process, their possible mitigation and control techniques, and characterization strategies that can be of help in understanding and minimizing the fouling problem

    Growth characteristics and productivity of tall fescue new variety ‘Purumi’ in South Korea

    A new tall fescue variety (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) named ‘Purumi’ was developed by the National Institute of Animal Science, Rural Development Administration, South Korea from 1999 to 2007. For synthetic seed  production of this new variety, 5 superior clones: EFa9108, EFa0010, EFa0020, EFa0108 and EFa0202 were selected and polycrossed. The agronomic growth characteristics and forage production capability of the seeds were studied at Cheonan from 2004 to 2005, and regional trials were conducted in Cheonan, Pyungchang, Jeju and Jinju from 2008 to 2010. Purumi showed enhanced winter hardiness, disease resistance, and regrowth ability as compared to Fawn. The dry matter yield of Purumi was about 5.6% (16.821 kg/ha) higher than that of Fawn. However, the  nutritive value of both varieties was similar. Since this new variety of tall fescue, Purumi has been developed and distributed with its most  remarkable adaptability for Korean climates and superior value as a livestock feed, it is expected to play an important role in restoration of the pasture industry in Korea.Key words: Tall fescue, Purumi, variety, forage, grassland

    Serum levels of matrix metalloproteinases-2 and-9 and their tissue inhibitors in inflammatory neuromuscular disorders

    We monitored serum levels of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMPs) before and during intravenously applied immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy in 33 patients with chronic immune-mediated neuropathies and myopathies and 15 controls. Baseline MMP-2 and TIMP-2 serum levels were lower and MMP-9 and TIMP-1 serum levels higher in all patients compared to age-matched controls. Eight days after IVIG treatment, MMP-2, TIMP-2, and TIMP-1 serum levels increased, while MMP-9 serum levels decreased, indicating tissue repair. After 60 days, MMP-9 levels increased, MMP-2 approached normal levels, while TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 serum levels were below day 8 levels, indicating relapsing tissue damage. Comparing the MMP/TIMP results with the clinical courses, IVIG treatment tended to change MMP/TIMP levels in a way that paralleled clinical improvement and relapse. In sum, during a distinct time period, IVIG therapy seems to be able to modulate VIMP-mediated tissue repair. Copyright (c) 2006 S. Karger AG, Basel

    Intravaginal Administration of Fc-Fused IL7 Suppresses the Cervicovaginal Tumor by Recruiting HPV DNA Vaccine-Induced CD8 T Cells

    Purpose: The induction of tissue-localized virus-specific CD8 T-cell response is essential for the development of an effective therapeutic vaccine against genital diseases, such as cervical cancer and genital herpes. Here, we aimed to elucidate the immunologic role of IL7 in the induction of mucosal cellular immunity. Experimental Design: IL7 was engineered through Fc fusion to enhance mucosal delivery across the genital epithelial barrier. The immunomodulatory role of IL7 was evaluated by monitoring the kinetics of various immune cells and measuring the expression of chemokines and cytokines after intravaginal administration of Fc-fused IL7 (IL7-Fc). The antitumor effects of intramuscular human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA vaccine or topical IL7-Fc alone or in a combinational regimen on mice survival were compared using a orthotopic cervical cancer model. Results: Intravaginal treatment of IL7-Fc, but not native IL7, induces upregulation of chemokines (CXCL10, CCL3, CCL4, and CCL5), cytokines (IFN-gamma, TNF alpha, IL6, and IL1 beta), and an adhesion molecule (VCAM-1) in the genital tract, leading to the recruitment of several leukocytes, including CD4, CD8, gamma delta T cells, and dendritic cells. Importantly, in this murine cervical cancer model, topical administration of IL7-Fc after intramuscular HPV DNA vaccination increases the number of HPV-specific CD8 T cells in the genital mucosa, but not in the spleen, leading to stronger antitumor activity than the HPV DNA vaccine alone. Conclusions: Our findings provide an important insight into the immunomodulatory role of IL7-Fc via topical application and the design of therapeutic vaccine regimen that induces effective genital-mucosal CD8 T-cell responses.1110Ysciescopu
