Race, Culture & Abuse of Persons with Disabilities

    Get PDF
This chapter will explore how race and culture influence the lives of persons with disabilities who are experiencing abuse. The discussion will be framed by an intersectional lens and will be informed by cultural humility and critical race theory. Practitioners need to remain open to the idea that they cannot and will not know all there is to know about any given culture, and they should be open to hearing about their clients’ understanding and experiences of culture. Rather than knowing certain pieces of “knowledge” about a cultural group, it is more important to understand what pieces of culture the clients embrace or reject. This chapter will conclude with a composite client case example of a female, middle-aged, Korean immigrant with Multiple Sclerosis, who is very active in her Christian church, and who is being abused by her husband. Discussion of this case will highlight the intersectional context of the client’s experience and how they may influence her decision to seek help (and from whom) as well as her experience of receiving help. The case discussion also highlights the practitioner’s values and behaviors that are consistent with cultural humility and critical race theory

    Sudden death of effective entanglement

Sudden death of entanglement is a well-known effect resulting from the finite volume of separable states. We study the case when the observer has a limited measurement capability and analyse the effective entanglement, i.e. entanglement minimized over the output data. We show that in the well defined system of two quantum dots monitored by single electron transistors, one may observe a sudden death of effective entanglement when real, physical entanglement is still alive. For certain measurement setups, this occurs even for initial states for which sudden death of physical entanglement is not possible at all. The principles of the analysis may be applied to other analogous scenarios, such as etimation of the parameters arising from quantum process tomography.Comment: final version, 5 pages, 3 figure

Four-Dimensional Effective Supergravity and Soft Terms in M-Theory

We provide a simple macroscopic analysis of the four-dimensional effective supergravity of the Ho\v{r}ava-Witten M-theory which is expanded in powers of κ2/3/ρV1/3\kappa^{2/3}/\rho V^{1/3} and κ2/3ρ/V2/3\kappa^{2/3}\rho/V^{2/3} where κ2\kappa^2, VV and ρ\rho denote the eleven-dimensional gravitational coupling, the Calabi-Yau volume and the eleventh length respectively. Possible higher order terms in the K\"ahler potential are identified and matched with the heterotic string corrections. In the context of this M-theory expansion, we analyze the soft supersymmetry-breaking terms under the assumption that supersymmetry is spontaneously broken by the auxiliary components of the bulk moduli superfields. It is examined how the pattern of soft terms changes when one moves from the weakly coupled heterotic string limit to the M-theory limit.Comment: Latex, 23 pages, 3 figures. Effect of isoelectronic doping on honeycomb lattice iridate A_2IrO_3

We have investigated experimentally and theoretically the series (Na1x_{1-x}Lix_{x})2_{2}IrO3_{3}. Contrary to what has been believed so far, only for x0.25x\leq0.25 the system forms uniform solid solutions. For larger Li content, as evidenced by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and density functional theory calculations, the system shows a miscibility gap and a phase separation into an ordered Na3_{3}LiIr2_2O6_{6} phase with alternating Na3_3 and LiIr2_2O6_6 planes, and a Li-rich phase close to pure Li2_{2}IrO3_{3}. For x0.25x\leq 0.25 we observe (1) an increase of c/ac/a with Li doping up to x=0.25x=0.25, despite the fact that c/ac/a in pure Li2_{2}IrO3_{3} is smaller than in Na2_{2}IrO3_{3}, and (2) a gradual reduction of the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature TNT_{N} and ordered moment. The previously proposed magnetic quantum phase transition at x0.7x\approx 0.7 may occur in a multiphase region and its nature needs to be re-evaluated.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures including supplemental informatio

Mapping Global Star Formation in the Interacting Galaxy Pair Arp32

A multi-wavelength set of photometric data including UV (GALEX), optical, near-IR, infrared (Spitzer) and radio (VLA 20cm) images and spectroscopic observations are used to map the dust-obscured and unobscured star formation in the galaxy pair Arp 32. The system consists of an actively starforming galaxy and another one with depressed star formation. The most active galaxy has disrupted morphology and different sites of star formation. Spectroscopic data show hints of nuclear activity in its core, intense star formation in limited regions of the galaxy as well as an underlying population of stars witnessing a past episode of star formation. Current star formation rates are estimated from UV and bolometric IR luminosities
