Prediction of airfoil stall using Navier-Stokes equations in streamline coordinates
A Navier-Stokes procedure to calculate the flow about an airfoil at incidence was developed. The parabolized equations are solved in the streamline coordinates generated for an arbitrary airfoil shape using conformal mapping. A modified k-epsilon turbulence model is applied in the entire domain, but the eddy viscosity in the laminar region is suppressed artificially to simulate the region correctly. The procedure was applied to airfoils at various angles of attack, and the results are quite satisfactory for both laminar and turbulent flows. It is shown that the present choice of the coordinate system reduces the error due to numerical diffusion, and that the lift is accurately predicted for a wide range of incidence
Ku-band system design study and TDRSS interface analysis
The capabilities of the Shuttle/TDRSS link simulation program (LinCsim) were expanded to account for radio frequency interference (RFI) effects on the Shuttle S-band links, the channel models were updated to reflect the RFI related hardware changes, the ESTL hardware modeling of the TDRS communication payload was reviewed and evaluated, in LinCsim the Shuttle/TDRSS signal acquisition was modeled, LinCsim was upgraded, and possible Shuttle on-orbit navigation techniques was evaluated
Characterisation of the dynamical quantum state of a zero temperature Bose-Einstein condensate
We describe the quantum state of a Bose-Einstein condensate at zero
temperature. By evaluating the Q-function we show that the ground state of
Bose-Einstein condensate under the Hartree approximation is squeezed. We find
that multimode Schroedinger cat states are generated as the condensate evolves
in a ballistic expansion.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure
Heralded Entanglement between Atomic Ensembles: Preparation, Decoherence, and Scaling
Heralded entanglement between collective excitations in two atomic ensembles
is probabilistically generated, stored, and converted to single photon fields.
By way of the concurrence, quantitative characterizations are reported for the
scaling behavior of entanglement with excitation probability and for the
temporal dynamics of various correlations resulting in the decay of
entanglement. A lower bound of the concurrence for the collective atomic state
of 0.9\pm 0.3 is inferred. The decay of entanglement as a function of storage
time is also observed, and related to the local dynamics.Comment: 4 page
Factorization in graviton interactions
The study of factorization in the linearized gravity is extended to the
graviton scattering processes with a massive scalar particle, with a massless
vector boson and also with a graviton. Every transition amplitude is shown to
be completely factorized and the physical implications of their common factors
are discussed.Comment: 5 pages, Revtex 3.0, SNUTP 93-7
Non-Classical Response from Quench-Cooled Solid Helium Confined in Porous Gold
We have investigated the non-classical response of solid 4He confined in
porous gold set to torsional oscillation. When solid helium is grown rapidly,
nearly 7% of the solid helium appears to be decoupled from the oscillation
below about 200 mK. Dissipation appears at temperatures where the decoupling
shows maximum variation. In contrast, the decoupling is substantially reduced
in slowly grown solid helium. The dynamic response of solid helium was also
studied by imposing a sudden increase in the amplitude of oscillation. Extended
relaxation in the resonant period shift, suggesting the emergence of the
pinning of low energy excitations, was observed below the onset temperature of
the non-classical response. The motion of a dislocation or a glassy solid is
restricted in the entangled narrow pores and is not likely responsible for the
period shift and long relaxation
