This paper is a preliminary report on using the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and Shaded Relief Image in geological mapping in the Carpathians. Digital processing of the topographical maps in 1:25 000 scale enabled 3D visualization of a fragment of olish Outer Carpathians, situated between Dobczyce and Mszana Dolna villages. This permitted a preliminary interpretation of lin - eaments occurring in the study area and recognition of correlation between the lineaments and geological structure of the Carpathians Flysch Units. The picture of the Shaded Relief Image was compared with existing remote sensing data such as radar and satellite images, and with results of geological mapping carried out by author in the field. The recognized lineaments can reflect fault zones in the flysch cover and in the consolidated basement. The correlation of lineaments detected in the digital models with discontinuities confirmed in outcrops demonstrates the value of digital methods in geological cartography

The Gorce Mountains are a picturesque range in the Polish sector of the Outer Carpathians. They are built with turbiditic deposits, representing sedimentary successions of the Krynica and Bystrica Subunits of the Magura Nappe, Late Cretaceous- Paleogene in age. In the Gorce Mts. the majority of lithostratigraphic divisions representing discussed subunits are very well exposed in numerous outcrops. The deposits of the Magura Nappe are folded, locally thrust, and cut by the strike-slip and oblique fault system. This nappe in the Gorce Mts. covers tectonically units of the Foremagura Group of Nappes, which crop out in two tectonic windows. From Rabka-Zdr贸j and Szczawa mineral waters are well known. Morphology of the Gorces Mts. is varied. A lot of rock tors occur there, as well as landslides, often extensive. Good localizations, varied geology, great land relief and rich live nature, as well as the highlander culture and monuments make the Gorce Mts. an area of high geotouristic potential.Gorce s膮 malowniczym pasmem w polskiej cz臋艣ci Zachodnich Karpat Zewn臋trznych. Trace fossil Artichnus pholeoides igen. nov. isp. nov. in Eocene turbidites, Polish Carpathians : possible ascription to holothurians

    Get PDF
A hitherto unknown trace fossil was found in some abundance in turbidites of the Polish Outer Carpathians. The occurrence is within the Hieroglyphic Beds of the Silesian Nappe, within the Szczyrzyc Synclinorium, of Middle Eocene age. The trace fossil is a wide, J-shaped structure having a narrow, upward tapering shaft as a connection to the seafloor. The distal end also tapers, to a blind termination. The burrow lumen is surrounded by an irregular spreite structure. The trace fossil is compared with the work of burrowing holothurians, which show some comparative features that suggest a tracemaker belonging to the Apodida

Type locality of the Mutne Sandstone Member of the Jaworzynka Formation, Western Outer Carpathians, Poland

    Get PDF
The Mutne Sandstone Member occurs within the Jaworzynka Formation of the Magura Nappe deposits, typical for the western marginal Siary subunit. In the area north of Jele艣nia it is represented by the thick sandstone complex. Typical and complete profile of this division is located in Mutne village next to Jele艣nia, on the slope of Janikowa Grapa Mt. This locality represents the type section for the Mutne Sandstone Member, while three others: Jaworzynka, Rychwa艂dek and Kuk贸w-Rzyczki serve as reference sections. The age of the Mutne Sandstone Member was determined as Maastrichtian-Palaeocene; but only Maastrichtian is documented by foraminiferal assemblages. The Palaeocene age comes however from the superposition of this lithosom within the Magura Nappe profile. The Campanian/Maastrichtian-Palaeocene complex of Siary Subunit deposits provides the perfect example for application of supersequences to the Western Flysch Carpathian basin. It fits the Upper Zuni IV supersequence and global time slice. The Mutne type locality is also a prime geotourist attraction and object of inanimated nature proposed for protection

The Ostravice Sandstone Member was identified and described as a lithostratigraphic unit in the Polish part of the Outer Carpathians. This division occurs in the lowermost part of the Godula Formation, is underlain by variegated deposits of the Maz谩k Formation or directly by the Barnasi贸wka and Lhoty formations, and overlain by the Czernich贸w Member of the Godula Formation. Domination by thick- and very thick-bedded sandstones, conglomeratic sandstones and conglomerates rich in calcareous clasts, mostly of the 艩tramberk-type limestones, is typical for the Ostravice Sandstone Member. These deposits are widespread between the Moravskoslezsk茅 Beskydy Mountains in the Czech Republic and the Ci臋偶kowice Foothills in Poland. The documentation of the Ostravice Sandstone Member occurrence as well as the petrological, sedimentological features, and inventory of the carbonate clasts are presented here

The geological structure of the Siary zone in the Mutne area based on the lithostratigraphic profile of the Magura nappe between Zwardo艅 and Sucha Beskidzka (Flysch Carpathians, southern Poland)

In the western part of the flysch Carpathians, in the area between 呕ywiec and Sucha Beskidzka, Siary Zone composes the outer part of the Magura nappe and overthrusts Fore-Magura Unit and Silesian nappe. Detailed mapping of the Mutne area allows for a new structural interpretation, on the other hand, the lithostratigraphic profile of the investigated region has been corrected. Siary Zone is represents by the Inoceramian beds (Senonian-Paleocene), Mutne sandstones (Paleocene), variegatet shales of the 艁abowa Formation (fm.) (Middle Eocene), Hieroglyphic beds (Middle and Upper Eocene), Sub-Magura beds (Middle Eocene-Lower Oligocene?), Magura glauconite sandstones (Upper Eocene-Oligocene), and Supra-Magura beds (Oligocene). These strata build Pewel Wielka, Mutne and Pewel Ma艂a slices of the Magura nappe in the investigated region. The research also shows, that within the Inoceramian beds and Mutne sandstones clasts of the grey marls may probably occur. Formation of these clasts is connected with tectonic activity in the south decline of the Racza cordillere (Andrusov, 1968)

The area in the vicinity of Nowy Targ is located within the northern part of the Orawa-Nowy Targ Basin and the southern slopes of the Gorce Mountains in the Polish sector of the Outer Carpathians. Geologically, the region is built of the Upper Cretaceous鈥揚alaeogene turbiditic deposits representing sedimentary successions of the Krynica Subunit of the Magura Nappe and the Neogene鈥換uaternary fresh-water deposits filling the Orawa-Nowy Targ Basin. The Magura Nappe in the described area is represented by the thick-bedded sandstones of the Magura Formation and thin-and medium-bedded sandstone-shale deposits of the Malcov Formation, which are well-exposed in numerous outcrops, especially in the 艁opuszna stream valley. The Magura Nappe deposits were folded and cut by a fault system in the Miocene. The presented area displays varied geomorphological relief and picturesque landscapes. Moreover, rare species of fauna and flora occurring here, as well as the still-alive culture of the Podhale Highlanders and continuously improving tourist infrastructure additionally contribute to the development of geotourism in this area. In addition, this area is an increasingly popular place among cyclists, thanks to the development of a network of bicycle paths, therefore the proposed geotourist bicycle path will extend the offer for this group of tourists.
