A Biologically Plausible SOM Representation of the Orthographic Form of 50,000 French Words
International audienceRecently, an important aspect of human visual word recognition has been characterized. The letter position is encoded in our brain using an explicit representation of order based on letter pairs: the open-bigram coding [15]. We hypothesize that spelling has evolved in order to minimize reading errors. Therefore, word recognition using bigrams — instead of letters — should be more efficient. First, we study the influence of the size of the neighborhood, which defines the number of bigrams per word, on the performance of the matching between bigrams and word. Our tests are conducted against one of the best recognition solutions used today by the industry, which matches letters to words. Secondly, we build a cortical map representation of the words in the bigram space — which implies numerous experiments in order to achieve a satisfactory projection. Third, we develop an ultra-fast version of the self-organizing map in order to achieve learning in minutes instead of months
Color Reflection Invariance and Monopole Condensation in QCD
We review the quantum instability of the Savvidy-Nielsen-Olesen (SNO) vacuum
of the one-loop effective action of SU(2) QCD, and point out a critical defect
in the calculation of the functional determinant of the gluon loop in the SNO
effective action. We prove that the gauge invariance, in particular the color
reflection invariance, exclude the unstable tachyonic modes from the gluon loop

Compressible Sub-Alfvenic MHD turbulence in Low-beta Plasmas
We present a model for compressible sub-Alfvenic isothermal
magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in low-beta plasmas and numerically test
it. We separate MHD fluctuations into 3 distinct families - Alfven, slow, and
fast modes. We find that, production of slow and fast modes by Alfvenic
turbulence is suppressed. As a result, Alfven modes in compressible regime
exhibit scalings and anisotropy similar to those in incompressible regime. Slow
modes passively mimic Alfven modes. However, fast modes show isotropy and a

Neutron scattering study of novel magnetic order in Na0.5CoO2
We report polarized and unpolarized neutron scattering measurements of the
magnetic order in single crystals of Na0.5CoO2. Our data indicate that below
T_N=88 K the spins form a novel antiferromagnetic pattern within the CoO2
planes, consisting of alternating rows of ordered and non-ordered Co ions. The
domains of magnetic order are closely coupled to the domains of Na ion order,
consistent with such a two-fold symmetric spin arrangement. Magnetoresistance
and anisotropic susceptibility measurements further support this model for the

Abelian Chern-Simons field theory and anyon equation on a torus
We quantize the abelian Chern-Simons theory coupled to non-relativistic
matter field on a torus without invoking the flux quantization. Through a
series of canonical transformations which is equivalent to solving the Gauss
constraint, we obtain an effective hamiltonian density with periodic matter
field. We also obtain the many-anyon Schr\"odinger equation with periodic
Aharonov-Bohm potentials and analyze the periodic property of the wavefunction.
