Quenched chiral logarithms in lattice QCD with exact chiral symmetry
We examine quenched chiral logarithms in lattice QCD with overlap Dirac
quark. For 100 gauge configurations generated with the Wilson gauge action at on the lattice, we compute quenched quark
propagators for 12 bare quark masses. The pion decay constant is extracted from
the pion propagator, and from which the lattice spacing is determined to be
0.147 fm. The presence of quenched chiral logarithm in the pion mass is
confirmed, and its coefficient is determined to be , in agreement with the theoretical estimate in quenched chiral perturbation
theory. Further, we obtain the topological susceptibility of these 100 gauge
configurations by measuring the index of the overlap Dirac operator. Using a
formula due to exact chiral symmetry, we obtain the mass in quenched
chiral perturbation theory, Mev, and an estimate
of , which is in good agreement with that
determined from the pion mass.Comment: 24 pages, 6 EPS figures; v2: some clarifications added, to appear in

Limits on MeV Dark Matter from the Effective Number of Neutrinos
Thermal dark matter that couples more strongly to electrons and photons than
to neutrinos will heat the electron-photon plasma relative to the neutrino
background if it becomes nonrelativistic after the neutrinos decouple from the
thermal background. This results in a reduction in N_eff below the
standard-model value, a result strongly disfavored by current CMB observations.
Taking conservative lower bounds on N_eff and on the decoupling temperature of
the neutrinos, we derive a bound on the dark matter particle mass of m_\chi >
3-9 MeV, depending on the spin and statistics of the particle. For p-wave
annihilation, our limit on the dark matter particle mass is stronger than the
limit derived from distortions to the CMB fluctuation spectrum produced by
annihilations near the epoch of recombination.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, discussion added, references added and updated,

A note on Zolotarev optimal rational approximation for the overlap Dirac operator
We discuss the salient features of Zolotarev optimal rational approximation
for the inverse square root function, in particular, for its applications in
lattice QCD with overlap Dirac quark. The theoretical error bound for the
matrix-vector multiplication is derived. We check that
the error bound is always satisfied amply, for any QCD gauge configurations we
have tested. An empirical formula for the error bound is determined, together
with its numerical values (by evaluating elliptic functions) listed in Table 2
as well as plotted in Figure 3. Our results suggest that with Zolotarev
approximation to , one can practically preserve the exact
chiral symmetry of the overlap Dirac operator to very high precision, for any
gauge configurations on a finite lattice.Comment: 23 pages, 5 eps figures, v2:minor clarifications, and references

Insights into the diurnal cycle of global Earth outgoing radiation using a numerical weather prediction model
A globally complete, high temporal resolution and multiple-variable approach is employed to analyse the diurnal cycle of Earth’s outgoing energy flows. This is made possible via the use of Met Office model output for September 2010 that is assessed alongside regional satellite observations throughout. Principal component analysis applied to the longwave component of modelled outgoing radiation reveals dominant diurnal patterns related to land surface heating and convective cloud development, respectively explaining 68.5 and 16.0% of the variance at the global scale. The total variance explained by these first two patterns is markedly less than previous regional estimates from observations, and this analysis suggests that around half of the difference relates to the lack of global coverage in the observations. The first pattern is strongly and simultaneously coupled to the land surface temperature diurnal variations. The second pattern is strongly coupled to the cloud water content and height diurnal variations, but lags the cloud variations by several hours. We suggest that the mechanism con- trolling the delay is a moistening of the upper troposphere due to the evaporation of anvil cloud. The shortwave component of modelled outgoing radiation, analysed in terms of albedo, exhibits a very dominant pattern explaining 88.4 % of the variance that is related to the angle of incoming solar radiation, and a second pattern explaining 6.7 % of the variance that is related to compensating effects from convective cloud development and marine stratocumulus cloud dissipation. Similar patterns are found in regional satellite observations, but with slightly different timings due to known model biases. The first pattern is controlled by changes in surface and cloud albedo, and Rayleigh and aerosol scattering. The second pattern is strongly coupled to the diurnal variations in both cloud water content and height in convective regions but only cloud water content in marine stratocumulus regions, with substantially shorter lag times compared with the longwave counterpart. This indicates that the shortwave radiation response to diurnal cloud development and dissipation is more rapid, which is found to be robust in the regional satellite observations. These global, diurnal radiation patterns and their coupling with other geophysical variables demonstrate the process-level understanding that can be gained using this approach and highlight a need for global, diurnal observing systems for Earth outgoing radiation in the future
Business process re-engineering in Saudi Arabia: A survey of understanding and attitudes
This survey was conducted in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) to investigate the level of awareness of BPR. Respondents (customers, employees, and managers) had different educational backgrounds and were from private and public sectors. Findings of the study indicate a general awareness of BPR in KSA. © 2008 IEEE
Role of material properties and mesostructure on dynamic deformation and shear instability in Al-W granular composites
Dynamic experiments with Al-W granular/porous composites revealed
qualitatively different behavior with respect to shear localization depending
on bonding between Al particles. Two-dimensional numerical modeling was used to
explore the mesomechanics of the large strain dynamic deformation in Al-W
granular/porous composites and explain the experimentally observed differences
in shear localization between composites with various mesostructures.
Specifically, the bonding between the Al particles, the porosity, the roles of
the relative particle sizes of Al and W, the arrangements of the W particles,
and the material properties of Al were investigated using numerical
calculations. It was demonstrated in simulations that the bonding between the
"soft" Al particles facilitated shear localization as seen in the experiments.
Numerical calculations and experiments revealed that the mechanism of the shear
localization in granular composites is mainly due to the local high strain flow
of "soft" Al around the "rigid" W particles causing localized damage
accumulation and subsequent growth of the meso/macro shear bands/cracks. The
"rigid" W particles were the major geometrical factor determining the
initiation and propagation of "kinked" shear bands in the matrix of "soft" Al
particles, leaving some areas free of extensive plastic deformation as observed
in experiments and numerical calculations.Comment: 10 pages, 14 figures, submitted to Journal of Applied Physic
Positivity of Quasilocal Mass
Motivated by the important work of Brown adn York on quasilocal energy, we
propose definitions of quasilocal energy and momentum surface energy of a
spacelike 2-surface with positive intrinsic curvature in a spacetime. We show
that the quasilocal energy of the boundary of a compact spacelike hypersurface
which satisfies the local energy condition is strictly positive unless the
spacetime is flat along the spacelike hypersurface.Comment: 4 pages; final published versio
