    Implicit Theories and Their Role in Judgments and Reactions: A Word From Two Perspectives

    In this target article, we present evidence for a new model of individual differences in judgments and reactions. The model holds that people's implicit theories about human attributes structure the way they understand and react to human actions and outcomes. We review research showing that when people believe that attributes (such as intelligence or moral character) are fixed, trait-like entities (an entity theory), they tend to understand outcomes and actions in terms of these fixed traits ('I failed the test because I am dumb' or 'He stole the bread because he is dishonest'). In contrast, when people believe that attributes are more dynamic, malleable, and developable (an incremental theory), they tend to focus less on broad traits and, instead, tend to understand outcomes and actions in terms of more specific behavioral or psychological mediators ('I failed the test because of my effort or strategy' or 'He stole the bread because he was desperate'). The two frameworks also appear to foster different reactions: helpless versus mastery-oriented responses to personal setbacks and an emphasis on retribution versus education or rehabilitation for transgressions. These findings are discussed in terms of their implications for personality, motivation, and social perception.published_or_final_versio

    Human mental models of humanoid robots

    Effective communication between a person and a robot may depend on whether there exists a common ground of understanding between the two. In two experiments modelled after human-human studies we examined how people form a mental model of a robot’s factual knowledge. Participants estimated the robot’s knowledge by extrapolating from their own knowledge and from information about the robot’s origin and language. These results suggest that designers of humanoid robots must attend not only to the social cues that robots emit but also to the information people use to create mental models of a robot.published_or_final_versio

    Early diagnosis of primary human herpesvirus 6 infection in childhood: Serology, polymerase chain reaction, and virus load

    Qualitative and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) DNA in whole blood and plasma was correlated with serology and clinical assessment in 143 children hospitalized for undifferentiated febrile illness to evaluate options for diagnosis of primary HHV-6 infection on the acute blood specimen. PCR and serology for HHV-7 were done in parallel to define serologic cross-reactions. Using HHV-6 seroconversion as the reference standard, detection of HHV-6 DNA in whole blood in the absence of antibody in the plasma was the most reliable evidence of primary HHV-6 infection. Detection of HHV-6 DNA in plasma and a high virus load in whole blood (>3.3 log 10 copies/5 ÎĽL) had a sensitivity of 90% and 100%, respectively, in diagnosing primary HHV-6 infection. However, both were occasionally found in patients with other infections, possibly associated with HHV-6 reactivation. Maternal antibody may confound interpretation of serology in patients under 3 months of age.published_or_final_versio

    A Wireless Multifunctional SSVEP-Based Brain Computer Interface Assistive System

    IEEE Several kinds of brain-computer interface (BCI) systems have been proposed to compensate for the lack of medical technology for assisting patients who lose the ability to use motor functions to communicate with the outside world. However, most of the proposed systems are limited by their non-portability, impracticality and inconvenience because of the adoption of wired or invasive electroencephalography (EEG) acquisition devices. Another common limitation is the shortage of functions provided because of the difficulty of integrating multiple functions into one BCI system. In this study, we propose a wireless, non-invasive and multifunctional assistive system which integrates steady state visually evoked potential (SSVEP)-based BCI and a robotic arm to assist patients to feed themselves. Patients are able to control the robotic arm via the BCI to serve themselves food. Three other functions: video entertainment, video calling, and active interaction are also integrated. This is achieved by designing a functional menu and integrating multiple subsystems. A refinement decision-making mechanism is incorporated to ensure the accuracy and applicability of the system. Fifteen participants were recruited to validate the usability and performance of the system. The averaged accuracy and information transfer rate (ITR) achieved is 90.91% and 24.94 bit per min respectively. The feedback from the participants demonstrates that this assistive system is able to significantly improve the quality of daily life

    A wireless steady state visually evoked potential-based BCI eating assistive system

Brain-Computer interface (BCI) which aims at enabling users to perform tasks through their brain waves has been a feasible and worth developing solution for growing demand of healthcare. Current proposed BCI systems are often with lower applicability and do not provide much help for reducing burdens of users because of the time-consuming preparation required by adopted wet sensors and the shortage of provided interactive functions. Here, by integrating a state visually evoked potential (SSVEP)-based BCI system and a robotic eating assistive system, we propose a non-invasive wireless steady state visually evoked potential (SSVEP)-based BCI eating assistive system that enables users with physical disabilities to have meals independently. The analysis compared different methods of classification and indicated the best method. The applicability of the integrated eating assistive system was tested by an Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) patient, and a questionnaire reply and some suggestion are provided. Fifteen healthy subjects engaged the experiment, and an average accuracy of 91.35%, and information transfer rate (ITR) of 20.69 bit per min are achieved. For online performance evaluation, the ALS patient gave basic affirmation and provided suggestions for further improvement. In summary, we proposed a usable SSVEP-based BCI system enabling users to have meals independently. With additional adjustment of movement design of the robotic arm and classification algorithm, the system may offer users with physical disabilities a new way to take care of themselves

    Resection of phaeochromocytoma extending into the right atrium in a patient with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A

    We report the first case of successful surgical resection of a malignant phaeochromocytoma with tumour extension into vena cava and right atrium in a patient with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A. A 21-year-old woman with genetic confirmation of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A syndrome was diagnosed with a very rare case of malignant phaeochromocytoma with tumour thrombus extension into vena cava and right atrium causing Budd-Chiari syndrome. It posed a challenge to the surgeons with regard to complete tumour resection and vascular control. Reviewing the limited literature, surgical resection by means of cardiopulmonary bypass with hypothermic circulatory arrest has been reported with success in phaeochromocytoma with advance vascular involvement. Adopting this approach, adrenalectomy with complete thrombus excision by inferior vena cava exploration and right atriotomy were performed successfully by a multidisciplinary team.published_or_final_versio

    Analysis of the genomic homologous recombination in Theilovirus based on complete genomes

    At present, Theilovirus is considered to comprise four distinct serotypes, including Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus, Vilyuisk human encephalomyelitis virus, Thera virus, and Saffold virus. So far, there is no systematical study that investigated the genomic recombination of Theilovirus. The present study performed the phylogenetic and recombination analysis of Theilovirus over the complete genomes. Seven potentially significant recombination events were identified. However, according to the strains information and references related to the recombinants and their parental strains, four of the recombination events might happen non-naturally. These results will provide valuable hints for future research on evolution and antigenic variability of Theilovirus
