    A geometric basis for the standard-model gauge group

    A geometric approach to the standard model in terms of the Clifford algebra Cl_7 is advanced. A key feature of the model is its use of an algebraic spinor for one generation of leptons and quarks. Spinor transformations separate into left-sided ("exterior") and right-sided ("interior") types. By definition, Poincare transformations are exterior ones. We consider all rotations in the seven-dimensional space that (1) conserve the spacetime components of the particle and antiparticle currents and (2) do not couple the right-chiral neutrino. These rotations comprise additional exterior transformations that commute with the Poincare group and form the group SU(2)_L, interior ones that constitute SU(3)_C, and a unique group of coupled double-sided rotations with U(1)_Y symmetry. The spinor mediates a physical coupling of Poincare and isotopic symmetries within the restrictions of the Coleman--Mandula theorem. The four extra spacelike dimensions in the model form a basis for the Higgs isodoublet field, whose symmetry requires the chirality of SU(2).     Engineering the Next Generation of Solid State Proton Conductors: Synthesis and Properties of Ba_(3−x)K_(x)H_(x)(PO_4)_2

    A new series of compounds with general chemical formula Ba_(3−x)K_(x)H_(x)(PO_4)_2 has been successfully prepared. This particular stoichiometry was targeted as a candidate solid-state proton conductor because of its anticipated structural similarity to known M_(3)H(XO_4)_2 superprotonic conductors (M = Cs, Rb, NH4, K; X = Se, S) and to the known trigonal compound Ba_(3)(PO_4)_2. The materials were synthesized from aqueous solution using barium acetate, dipotassium hydrogen phosphate, and potassium hydroxide as starting materials. Through variations in the initial solution stoichiometry or the synthesis temperature, the final stoichiometry could be controlled from x ~ 0.5 to ~1. X-ray powder diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy chemical analysis, ^(1)H magic angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis were all employed to establish potassium and proton incorporation. The diffraction data confirmed crystallization of a trigonal phase, and chemical analysis showed the (Ba+K):P ratio to be 3:2, consistent with the target stoichiometry. The conductivity of the Ba_(3−x)K_(x)H_(x)(PO_4)_2 materials, as measured by A.C. impedance spectroscopy, is about 3 orders of magnitude greater than the end-member Ba_(3)(PO_4)_2 material with only a slight dependence on x, however, it is substantially lower than that of typical superprotonic conductors and of the M_(3)H(XO_4)_2 materials in particular. The close proximity of Ba to the hydrogen bond site is proposed to explain this behavior. At 250 °C, the conductivity is 2.4 × 10^(−5) S/cm for the composition x = 0.80, which, when combined with the water insolubility and the relatively high thermal stability, may render Ba_(3−x)K_(x)H_(x)(PO_4)_2 an attractive alternative in selected electrochemical applications to known superprotonic conductors

    Stellar-Mass Black Holes in the Solar Neighborhood

    We search for nearby, isolated, accreting, ``stellar-mass'' (3 to 100M⊙100M_\odot) black holes. Models suggest a synchrotron spectrum in visible wavelengths and some emission in X-ray wavelengths. Of 3.7 million objects in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release, about 150,000 objects have colors and properties consistent with such a spectrum, and 87 of these objects are X-ray sources from the ROSAT All Sky Survey. Thirty-two of these have been confirmed not to be black-holes using optical spectra. We give the positions and colors of these 55 black-hole candidates, and quantitatively rank them on their likelihood to be black holes. We discuss uncertainties the expected number of sources, and the contribution of blackholes to local dark matter.Comment: Replaced with version accepted by ApJ. 40 pages, 8 figure

    Spin Gauge Theory of Gravity in Clifford Space: A Realization of Kaluza-Klein Theory in 4-Dimensional Spacetime

    A theory in which 4-dimensional spacetime is generalized to a larger space, namely a 16-dimensional Clifford space (C-space) is investigated. Curved Clifford space can provide a realization of Kaluza-Klein theory. A covariant Dirac equation in curved C-space is explored. The generalized Dirac field is assumed to be a polyvector-valued object (a Clifford number) which can be written as a superposition of four independent spinors, each spanning a different left ideal of Clifford algebra. The general transformations of a polyvector can act from the left and/or from the right, and form a large gauge group which may contain the group U(1)xSU(2)xSU(3) of the standard model. The generalized spin connection in C-space has the properties of Yang-Mills gauge fields. It contains the ordinary spin connection related to gravity (with torsion), and extra parts describing additional interactions, including those described by the antisymmetric Kalb-Ramond fields.Comment: 57 pages; References added, section 2 rewritten and expande

    Clustering of Primordial Black Holes. II. Evolution of Bound Systems

    Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) that form from the collapse of density perturbations are more clustered than the underlying density field. In a previous paper, we showed the constraints that this has on the prospects of PBH dark matter. In this paper we examine another consequence of this clustering: the formation of bound systems of PBHs in the early universe. These would hypothetically be the earliest gravitationally collapsed structures, forming when the universe is still radiation dominated. Depending upon the size and occupation of the clusters, PBH merging occurs before they would have otherwise evaporated due to Hawking evaporation.Comment: 23 pages, 1 figure. Submitted to PR

    Field transformations and simple models illustrating the impossibility of measuring off-shell effects

    In the context of simple models illustrating field transformations in Lagrangian field theories we discuss the impossibility of measuring off-shell effects in nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung, Compton scattering, and related processes. To that end we introduce a simple phenomenological Lagrangian describing nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung and perform an appropriate change of variables leading to different off-shell behavior in the nucleon-nucleon amplitude as well as the photon-nucleon vertex. As a result we obtain a class of equivalent Lagrangians, generating identical S-matrix elements, of which the original Lagrangian is but one representative. We make use of this property in order to show that what appears as an off-shell effect in an S-matrix element for one Lagrangian may originate in a contact term from an equivalent Lagrangian. By explicit calculation we demonstrate for the case of nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung as well as nucleon Compton scattering the equivalence of observables from which we conclude that off-shell effects cannot in any unambiguous way be extracted from an S-matrix element. Finally, we also discuss some implications of introducing off-shell effects on a phenomenological basis, resulting from the requirement that the description of one process be consistent with that of other processes described by the same Lagrangian.Comment: 19 pages, Latex, using RevTe

    Lead Isotopes and Selected Metals in Ice from Law Dome, Antarctica

    The isotopic composition. of Pb and the concentrations of Pb, Ba and Bi were measured in selected ice-core samples from Law Dome, East Antarctica, to a depth of 1196 m. The range of concentrations found in decontaminated ice was 0.03-1.5 pg g-1 for Pb, 0.9-6.1 pg g-1 for Ba and 0.4-17 fg g-1 for Bi, excluding the deepest sample which contained ∌1 ppm of rock dust. The abundances of all four stable lead isotopes were measured and gave 206Pb/207Pb ratios ≀ ∌1.23. A value of 208Pb/207Pb = 2.78 was measured in the deepest sample and is consistent with reported Pb isotope ratios of Antarctic granulites. Although the element concentrations in some samples were lower than have been reported elsewhere, geochemical and isotopic evidence indicated that a number of samples were contaminated with Pb not present in the original ice. However, it appears that the technical skills now available are approaching the level where careful sample selection, decontamination and analysis can yield accurate results for the concentration and isotopic composition of Pb in Earth\u27s purest naturally occurring ice

    Nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung: An example of the impossibility of measuring off-shell amplitudes

    For nearly fifty years theoretical and experimental efforts in nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung (NNÎł\gamma) have been devoted to measuring off-shell amplitudes and distinguishing among various NN potentials on the basis of their off-shell behavior. New experiments are underway, designed specifically to attain kinematics further off shell than in the past, and thus to be more sensitive to the off-shell behavior. This letter shows that, contrary to these expectations, and due to the invariance of the S-matrix under transformations of the fields, the off-shell NN amplitude is as a matter of principle an unmeasurable quantity in NNÎł\gamma.Comment: 9 pages, Latex, using RevTeX; Minor wording changes, title changed, version to be published in Phys.
