    U.S. Quantitative Easing Policy Effect on TAIEX Futures Market Efficiency

    This paper examines the market efficiency of the Taiwan Stock Exchange Capitalization Weighted Stock Index (TAIEX) Futures after the announcement of Quantitative Easing (QE) policy. Order imbalance is used to explore the relationship between return and order imbalance. We find that under the unconditional OLS model, lagged order imbalances almost have no significantly positive predictive power for current return. Nonetheless, on the trading day after the announcement of QE 1 policy, one-minute interval data show that the lagged order imbalance has predictive power for current return. Under the conditional OLS model, the reversed relation between current return and lagged order imbalance is not universal; on the other hand, after the announcement of QE 2 policy, the reversed relation between current return and lagged order imbalance is more common. Moreover, under volatility-GARCH (1, 1), one-minute interval data shows significantly positive relation between order imbalance and volatility

    Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography—A Promising Imaging Modality in Diagnosing Coronary Artery Disease

    BackgroundTraditionally, information on coronary artery lesions is obtained from invasive coronary angiography (CAG). The clinical applicability and diagnostic performance of the newly developed 64-slice multislice computed tomography (MSCT) scanner in coronary angiographic evaluation is not well evaluated.MethodsCoronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) was performed in 345 patients (119 women, 226 men; mean age, 59.64 ±11.67 years). Concomitant CAG was performed in 53 patients. The diagnostic performance of CCTA for detecting significant lesions was compared with that of CAG by 3 independent cardiologists.ResultsAll CCTA was performed without complication. Comparison between CCTA and CAG was made in the 53 patients who underwent both studies. Sensitivity, specificity and the positive and negative predictive values for the 53 patients were: 81%, 99%, 87% and 99%, respectively.ConclusionThe 64-slice MSCT, developed in recent years, allows reliable noninvasive evaluation of coronary artery morphology, including plaque, stenosis and congenital anomaly. The diagnostic accuracy of MSCT scans for detecting lesions makes it a good imaging substitute for CAG in the evaluation of these coronary segments. [J Chin Med Assoc 2008;71(5):241–246

    Regulation of CLC-1 chloride channel biosynthesis by FKBP8 and Hsp90β.

    Mutations in human CLC-1 chloride channel are associated with the skeletal muscle disorder myotonia congenita. The disease-causing mutant A531V manifests enhanced proteasomal degradation of CLC-1. We recently found that CLC-1 degradation is mediated by cullin 4 ubiquitin ligase complex. It is currently unclear how quality control and protein degradation systems coordinate with each other to process the biosynthesis of CLC-1. Herein we aim to ascertain the molecular nature of the protein quality control system for CLC-1. We identified three CLC-1-interacting proteins that are well-known heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90)-associated co-chaperones: FK506-binding protein 8 (FKBP8), activator of Hsp90 ATPase homolog 1 (Aha1), and Hsp70/Hsp90 organizing protein (HOP). These co-chaperones promote both the protein level and the functional expression of CLC-1 wild-type and A531V mutant. CLC-1 biosynthesis is also facilitated by the molecular chaperones Hsc70 and Hsp90β. The protein stability of CLC-1 is notably increased by FKBP8 and the Hsp90β inhibitor 17-allylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin (17-AAG) that substantially suppresses cullin 4 expression. We further confirmed that cullin 4 may interact with Hsp90β and FKBP8. Our data are consistent with the idea that FKBP8 and Hsp90β play an essential role in the late phase of CLC-1 quality control by dynamically coordinating protein folding and degradation

    Ultra-wideband Outdoor Communication Characteristics with and without Traffic

    [[abstract]]The BER performance for ultra-wideband (UWB) outdoor communication in LOS and NLOS environments with and without traffic is investigated. We obtain the impulse responses of the UWB outdoor environment by both 2.5D SBR-Image method and inverse Fourier transform techniques. The 2.5D SBR-Image method is first considered for two-dimensional environment simulated without heights of obstacles by ray tubes. Then, heights of the obstacles are taken into consideration between the transmitters and receivers. If the height of ray is lower than that of obstacles, the ray is neglected for the receivers. This effectively reduces the simulating time. By using the impulse response of multipath channels, the BER performance for binary pulse amplitude modulation communications over the radio UWB system is evaluated. We have performed computer simulations in LOS and NLOS environments with and without traffic in dense building areas. Numerical results have shown that the multipath effect caused by moving vehicles in the outdoor LOS and NLOS environments has a great impact on BER performance. Rake receivers are used to improve the outage probability. The relationship between traffic and BER performance is investigated; meanwhile, the characteristics of LOS and NLOS outdoor UWB environments are analyzed.
