    The aim of this study was to compare the grab and track competitive swimming starts. Twelve male college competitive swimmers (six used the grab start and six the track start) participated in this study. Data were collected from two video cameras (60Hz) above water. The video data were digitized and analysis was performed with the Kwon3D Motion Analysis system. No significant differences existed between the two groups for flight time and distance, time to 12m, takeoff velocity and angle, entry velocity and angle and the center of mass at highest position above water.     Antimicrobial Susceptibility and Multiplex PCR Screening of AmpC Genes From Isolates of Enterobacter cloacae, Citrobacter freundii, and Serratia marcescens

    Background/PurposeThe emergence of multiple drug resistance in Enterobacteriaceae is of particular concern. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial susceptibility and screen for the ampC gene in three members of the Enterobacteriaceae family (Enterobacter cloacae, Citrobacter freundii, and Serratia marcescens) found at Taichung Veterans General Hospital during the past 5 years using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR).MethodsThe susceptibility of thirty isolates from each of the three Enterobacteriaceae family members to five antimicrobial agents (ceftazidime, flomoxef, imipenem, moxifloxacin, and colistin) was assessed. The susceptibility was analyzed by disk diffusion, screening and confirmatory tests for extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) and minimum inhibitory concentration tests according to the recommendations of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. The detection of ampC genes (3 families, including DHA, EBC and CIT) was performed by multiplex PCR. To detect the coexistence of ESBL genes, PCR was performed using five primer pairs: TEM, SHV, SHV-5, CTX-M-3, and CTX-M-14.ResultsOf the 90 isolates, 53 (58.9%) were positive in the screening test for ESBL. Resistance genes were detected in 12 (22.6%) of these isolates: ampC gene of DHA type in one E. cloacae isolate and EBC type in three E. cloacae isolates; ampC gene of CIT type in four C. freundii isolates; CTX-M-3-like in one C. freundii isolate and one S. marcescens isolate; TEM in three E. cloacae isolates, three C. freundii isolates and two S. marcescens isolates; SHV in one C. freundii isolate.ConclusionAntibiotic phenotypes cannot accurately distinguish the resistance mechanisms caused by ampC or ESBL, and especially in ESBL-ampC combinations. However, PCR is a useful technique for the identification of the different types of resistance genes

    Binding of Features and Responses in Inhibition of Return: The Effects of Task Demand

    Binding of target’s location and response has been demonstrated in inhibition of return (IOR). This study further investigated the effects of task demand on the binding of the target’s form to the target’s location and response in the target-target paradigm of IOR. Experiments 1 (detection task) and 2 (localization task), in which the target’s form was task irrelevant, suggested the binding of location and response. Experiment  3 (discrimination task), in which the target’s form was task relevant, showed the binding of target’s form, location, and response. These findings support the concept that the features and responses associated with a target are integrated into episodic representations or event files for the target event. Furthermore, task demand modulates the binding or retrieval of the event files

    Verifying External Interrupts of Embedded Microprocessor in SoC with on-chip bus

    Abstract-The microprocessor verification challenge becomes higher in the on-chip bus (OCB) than in the unit-level. Especially for the external interrupts, since they interface with other IP components, they suffer from the complicated bus protocol and IP conflict problems. This paper proposes a automatic method to verify the microprocessor external interrupt behaviors on the OCB. The verification approach is based on the Processor External Interrupt Verification Tool (PEVT) whose simulation environment is direct-connected memory. In this paper, we implement the PEVT-SoC and successfully verify two SoC platforms, one academic microprocessor and one public domain microprocessor. An interesting bug appears that is impossible to be discovered in the memory bus and not easy to be identified on the OCB. The result shows that the PEVT-SoC effectively shortens the verification time regardless of the system complexity and can be easily migrated to different platforms/microprocessors. With little human effort, even an inexperience designer can generate extensive verification cases in a systematic way

    Could Fiscal Policies Overcome a Deep Recession at the Zero Lower Bound?

    This paper sets up a New Keynesian model in which the monetary authority implements a zero lower bound interest rate policy, and uses it to explore whether the supportive fiscal instruments (including expansionary government spending, a payroll tax cut, and a financial assets tax cut) are effective in overcoming a deep recession. The salient feature of this study is that it provides a new dynamic viewpoint of regime switching by evaluating each of several supportive fiscal policies in terms of their performance in alleviating a deep recession. Two main findings emerge from the analysis. First, when the monetary authority implements the zero lower bound interest rate policy to dampen the negative natural rate shock, the economy will sink into a deep recession with deflation. Second, to overcome the deep recession, of the three supportive fiscal tools (i.e., expansionary government spending, a payroll tax cut, and a financial assets tax cut), only expansionary government spending is effective in alleviating the deep recession. More specifically, the implementation of fiscal policy in the form of either the payroll tax cut or the financial assets tax cut will only further deepen the recession

    Abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) is a progressively increasing intraabdominal pressure of more than 20 mm Hg with new-onset thoracoabdominal organ dysfunction. Primary abdominal compartment syndrome means increased pressure due to injury or disease in the abdominopelvic region. Secondary abdominal compartment syndrome means disease originating from outside the abdomen, such as significant burns or sepsis. As the pressure inside the abdomen increases, organ failure occurs, and the kidneys and lungs are the most frequently affected. Managements of ACS are multidisciplinary. Conservative treatment with adequate volume supple and with aggressive hemodynamic support is the first step. Decompressive laparotomy with open abdomen is indicated when ACS is refractory to conservative treatment and complicated with multiple organ failure. ACS can result in a high mortality rate, and successful treatment requires cooperation between physicians, intensivists, and surgeons
