Evaluation of Prognosis for Borrmann IV Gastric Cancer In Terms of DNA Analysis and Nucleolus Number

It is well known that Borrmann IV gastric cancer allows a most formidable prognosis. The influential factors on the prognosis of the 40 patients with Borrmann IV gastric cancer were evaluated by means of DNA analysis and nucleolus assessment of neoplastic cells obtained from embedded block of surgical specimens. The prognosis in patients with aneuploid pattern which account for 77.5% in this series was worse rather than that with diploid pattern on DNA histogram and also histologic findings of vascular invasion of ly (+), v (+) were mostly included into aneuploid pattern. It is assumed that the smaller the size of nucleolus in diameter, the higher the incidence of aneuploid pattern and the worse the prognosis of Borrmann IV gastric cancer has become. It is concluded that combination of DNA analysis with assessment of nucleolar number and size is required for detailed evaluation of the prognosis for Borrmann IV gastric cancer

Evaluation of Surgical Treatment for Breast Cancer

The prognosis of breast cancer is evaluated with respect to age. In theis is study, the patients\u27 age was divided into the three catgories, younger (under age 35), middle-aged (over age 36 and under age 65), and older (over age 66) patients. The survival rates among the three goups were almost the same according to age and disease stage. However, the prognosis in younger patients with advanced disease stage was unsatisfactory and it was inferior to that in older ones. It is concluded that advanced disease in younger patients contributed to poor prognosis in reflection of changes in hormonal circumstances such as pregnancy, delivery and lactation

DNA Ploidy Study in Esophageal Cancers

The values of DNA content in 47 patients with esophageal cancers were evaluated in comparison with clinic o-pathological factors and their prognoses. DNA ploidy profiles were analyzed from paraffin-embedded preparates. The diploid tumors accounted for 41.1% in this series. Aggressive cancer extension was not necessarily seen in the aneuploid tumors as compared with the diploid tumors. One must be aware that some of the diploid tumors indicate worse prognosis

    Surgical Treatment for Liver Cyst

We assess surgical treatment for seven patients with hepatic cyst on the basis of our clinical experience. It is emphasized to infer that surgical treatment is necessary for carcinoma arising from a cyst or suspcious one. It is also recommended that incidentally detected cysts should be treated with ethanol infusion under direct vision, if necessary, by using echoguided method. The operation method of deroofing except for complete resection is not necessarily guaranteed for large sized cysts

    Castleman\u27s Disease of the Retroperitoneum

A case of retroperitoneal CASTLEMAN\u27s disease of hyaline-vascular type is presented. A 58-year-old woman was admitted with a four month history of lower back pain. Although a retroperitoneal tumor was found on sonography and CASTLEMAN\u27s disease was included in the differential diagnosis, further imaging procedures such as computed tomography and angiography could not confirm the preoperative diagnosis of CASTLEMAN\u27s disease. After the surgical removal of the tumor, the patient has been doing well with no evidence of recurrent disease
