    Capture of CO2 from Coal-fired Power Plant with NaOH Solution in a Continuous Pilot-scale Bubble-column Scrubber

    AbstractA continuous pilot-scale bubble-column scrubber with NaOH as the absorbent was used to explore the capture of CO2 gas from a coal-fired power plant. The experimental design was based on the results of previous study. The diameter of the column was 20cm and the height of the column was 2.4 m. According to the S/N ratio, parameters, including absorption rate (RA), absorption efficiency (E), overall mass-transfer coefficient (KGa) and ratio of the gas-liquid flow rate (R), were selected for Taguchi analysis to obtain optimum conditions. A total of eleven experiments were carried out to verify the optimum conditions here. The range of the gas-flow rate (Qg) and liquid-flow rate (QLT) conducted in this work were 48-192 L/min and 1.6-10 L/min, respectively. The input gas concentrations were 9-12.2%. Using a steady-state material balance with a two-film model, RA and KGa could be determined. The results showed that E, RA and KGa were in the range of 30-98%, 1.03x10-4-11.48x10-4mol/s-L and 0.018-0.058 1/s, respectively. The obtained scrubbing factors (φ) were 0.00285-0.146mol/mol-L, while R was in the range of 0.23-24.14. The dynamic behavior of the scrubber was also discussed in this study. The results could be used as a basis for commercial scale operation for the carbon capture at a power plant as well as microalgae cultivation

    Outcome of lung cancer patients with acute respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation

    AbstractTo assess the weaning outcome of lung cancer patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF) requiring mechanical ventilation, we retrospectively analyzed the database of the respiratory intensive care unit at a university-affiliated tertiary care hospital.Charts were reviewed for cancer status, biochemistries before respiratory failure, causes of respiratory failure, acute physiology and chronic health evaluation (APACHE) III score, ventilatory settings, data recorded during spontaneous breathing, duration of ventilator days, and weaning outcome. Ninety-five consecutive respiratory failure events in 81 patients were recorded from January 1, 1995 through June 30, 1999.Twenty-six episodes ended with successful weaning (27.4%). Age, gender, and cancer status did not affect the weaning outcome. Serum albumin level, APACHE III score, highest fractional inspired O2 (FiO2) and highest positive end-expiratory pressure, organ failure, ability to shift to partial ventilatory support, and duration of mechanical ventilation could significantly influence the weaning outcome statistically. The overall hospital mortality rate was 85.2%.Our results suggested that lung cancer patients with ARF will have a better chance to wean if the initial APACHE III score was less than 70, use of FiO2 never exceeded 0.6, or less than 2 additional organ systems failed during the treatment course

    Reliability of flexible low temperature poly-silicon thin film transistor

    This work reports the effect of mechanical stress-induced degradation in flexible low-temperature polycrystalline-silicon thin-film transistors. After 100,000 iterations of channel-width-direction mechanical compression at R=2mm, a significant shift of extracted threshold voltage and an abnormal hump at the subthreshold region were found. Simulation reveals that both the strongest mechanical stress and electrical field takes place at both sides of the channel edge, between the polycrystalline silicon and gate insulator. The gate insulator suffered from a serious mechanical stress and result in a defect generation in the gate insulator. The degradation of the threshold voltage shift and the abnormal hump can be ascribed to the electron trapping in these defects. In addition, this work introduced three methods to reduce the degradation cause by the mechanical stress, including the quality improvement of the gate insulator, organic trench structure and active layer with a wing structure.
