    Robust evaluation of differential geometry properties using interval arithmetic techniques

    Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Ocean Engineering, 2005.Includes bibliographical references (p. 79-82).This thesis presents a robust method for evaluating differential geometry properties of sculptured surfaces by using a validated ordinary differential equation (ODE) system solver based on interval arithmetic. Iso-contouring of curvature of a Bezier surface patch. computation of curvature lines of a Bezier surface patch and computation of geodesics of a Bezier surface patch are computed by the Validated Numerical Ordinary Differential Equations (VNODE) solver which employs rounded interval arithmetic methods. Then. the results generated from the VNODE program are compared with the results from Praxiteles code which uses non-validated ODE solvers operating in double precision floating point arithmetic for the solution of the same problems.     Optimal replenishment decisions under two-level trade credit with partial upstream trade credit linked to order quantity and limited storage capacity

    [[abstract]]This paper extends the previous economic order quantity (EOQ) models under two-level trade credit such as Goyal (1985), Teng (2002), Huang (2003, 2007), Kreng and Tan (2010), Ouyang et al. (2013), and Teng et al. (2007) to reflect the real-life situations by incorporating the following concepts: (1) the storage capacity is limited, (2) the supplier offers the retailer a partially upstream trade credit linked to order quantity, and (3) both the dispensable assumptions that the upstream trade credit is longer than the downstream trade credit N<M and the interest charged per dollar per year is larger than or equal to the interest earned per dollar per year Ic<Ie are relaxed. We then study the necessary and sufficient conditions for finding the optimal solution for various cases and establish a useful algorithm to obtain the solution.     An Effective Clustering Approach to Stock Market Prediction

    In this paper, we propose an effective clustering method, HRK (Hierarchical agglomerative and Recursive K-means clustering), to predict the short-term stock price movements after the release of financial reports. The proposed method consists of three phases. First, we convert each financial report into a feature vector and use the hierarchical agglomerative clustering method to divide the converted feature vectors into clusters. Second, for each cluster, we recursively apply the K-means clustering method to partition each cluster into sub-clusters so that most feature vectors in each sub-cluster belong to the same class. Then, for each sub-cluster, we choose its centroid as the representative feature vector. Finally, we employ the representative feature vectors to predict the stock price movements. The experimental results show the proposed method outperforms SVM in terms of accuracy and average profits

    Optimisation of the Q factor of a complementary frequency selective surface

    The complementary frequency selective surface (CFSS) consists of an array of dipoles and slots either side of a thin dielectric and exhibits a sharp passband. The conductors layer adds capacitance to the apertures layer which in turn miniaturises the FSS. In this paper, the CFSS is placed in a waveguide and the Q factor is maximised by varying the electric properties and physical parameters. The fabricated CFSS structure shows good agreement with the simulations

    Pseudomonas aeruginosa sepsis with ecthyma gangrenosum and pseudomembranous pharyngolaryngitis in a 5-month-old boy

    Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection that induced pseudomembranous laryngopharyngitis and ecthyma gangrenosum simultaneously in a healthy infant is rare. We reported on a previously healthy 5-month-old boy with initial presentation of fever and diarrhea followed by stridor and progressive respiratory distress. P. aeruginosa sepsis was suspected because ecthyma gangrenosum over the right leg was found at the emergency department, and the diagnosis was confirmed by the blood culture. Fiberscope revealed bacterial pharyngolaryngitis without involvement of the trachea. Because of early recognition and adequate treatment, including antimicrobial therapy, noninvasive ventilation, incision, and drainage, he recovered completely without any complications
