Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticle Humidity Microsensors Integrated with Circuitry on-a-Chip

Get PDF
A humidity microsensor integrated with a readout circuit on-a-chip fabricated using the commercial 0.18 μm CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) process was presented. The integrated sensor chip consists of a humidity sensor and a readout circuit. The humidity sensor is composed of a sensitive film and interdigitated electrodes. The sensitive film is titanium dioxide prepared by the sol-gel method. The titanium dioxide is coated on the interdigitated electrodes. The humidity sensor requires a post-process to remove the sacrificial layer and to coat the titanium dioxide. The resistance of the sensor changes as the sensitive film absorbs or desorbs vapor. The readout circuit is employed to convert the resistance variation of the sensor into the output voltage. The experimental results show that the integrated humidity sensor has a sensitivity of 4.5 mV/RH% (relative humidity) at room temperature

Assessing the Integrity of Spillway Foundations

The erosion under a spillway can be a long-term issue that threatens the structural integrity of a water reservoir. The spillway under investigation was suspected to be defective after it had been commissioned in 1987 (Figure 1). Potholes and subsurface cavities were confirmed in the safety assessment using various NDT techniques including ground penetrating radar and impact echo. The GPR inspection was able to differentiate the intact region from the cavities under concrete slabs (Figure 2). The impact echo results and associated analyses provided further evidence of inferior condition in the soil under the concrete slabs. The engineering team designed and executed the repair project based on the conclusion of the integrity assessment. Subsequent GPR inspection has been performed so as to monitor the integrity of the spillway in a period of 18 months following the repair

High-throughput Automated Muropeptide Analysis (HAMA) Reveals Peptidoglycan Composition of Gut Microbial Cell Walls

Get PDF
Peptidoglycan (PGN), a net-like polymer constituted by muropeptides, provides protection for microorganisms and has been a major target for antibiotics for decades. Researchers have explored host-microbiome interactions through PGN recognition systems and discovered key muropeptides modulating host responses. However, most common characterization techniques for muropeptides are labor-intensive and require manual analysis of mass spectra due to the complex cross-linked PGN structures. Each species has unique moiety modifications and inter-/intra-bridges, which further complicates the structural analysis of PGN. Here, we developed a high-throughput automated muropeptide analysis (HAMA) platform leveraging tandem mass spectrometry and in silico muropeptide MS/MS fragmentation matching to comprehensively identify muropeptide structures, quantify their abundance, and infer PGN cross-linking types. We demonstrated the effectiveness of HAMA platform using well-characterized PGNs from E. coli and S. aureus and further applied it to common gut bacteria including Bifidobacterium, Bacteroides, Lactobacillus, Enterococcus, and Akkermansia muciiniphila. Specifically, we found that the stiffness and strength of the cell envelopes may correspond to the lengths and compositions of interpeptide bridges within Bifidobacterium species. In summary, the HAMA framework exhibits an automated, intuitive, and accurate analysis of PGN compositions, which may serve as a potential tool to investigate the post-synthetic modifications of saccharides, the variation in interpeptide bridges, and the types of cross-linking within bacterial PGNs.</p

Microwave characteristics of liquid-crystal tunable capacitors

[[abstract]]This letter investigates the microwave characteristics of the liquid crystal tunable capacitors for the first time. With the dielectric anisotropy properties, the liquid crystal capacitors present very different characteristics compared to the semiconductor or MEMS tunable capacitors. A quality factor of 310 with a control voltage of 5 V was achieved at 4 GHz. A tuning range of 25.3% for the control voltages from 0 to 5 V was obtained at 5 GHz. The results demonstrate the potential applications of liquid crystals as dielectric materials for capacitors with high quality factors and wide tuning ranges at high frequencies, particularly suitable for the future flexible electronics with transparent substrates.[[fileno]]2030121010007[[department]]電機工程學

Trends in epidemiology of hyperglycemia in pregnancy in Taiwan, 2008-2017

BackgroundHyperglycemia in pregnancy (HIP) increases the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. The increasing prevalence of overweight or obesity and the increasing proportion of pregnant women with advanced maternal age (AMA) in the recent decade may affect its prevalence. We analyzed the secular trend of HIP prevalence in 2008-2017 in Taiwan and investigated the impact of AMA in this study.MethodsThis cross-sectional study used data from Health and Welfare Data Science Center. Pregnant women who registered their data in the Birth Certificate Application in 2008-2017 were recruited. Diagnosis of HIP was defined by ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM codes.ResultsIn 2008-2017, 151,306-211,768 pregnant women were recruited in different years. The proportion of women with AMA increased from 15.8% to 32.1%. Meanwhile, the prevalence increased from 0.5% to 0.9% for preexisting diabetes, 0.2% to 0.4% for undiagnosed diabetes, and 11.4% to 14.5% for GDM. Maternal age was significantly associated with the prevalence of HIP. For women aged <30 years, 30-34 years and ≥35 years, the prevalence of preexisting diabetes were 0.51%, 0.75% and 1.24%, respectively (p<0.05); the prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes were 0.18%, 0.24% and 0.37%, respectively (p<0.05); and the prevalence of GDM were 10.57%, 14.77% and 18.13%, respectively (p<0.05). In all age groups, the prevalence of HIP increased over time in 2008-2017.ConclusionThe prevalence of HIP increased in Taiwan in 2008-2017, which may result from the increasing proportion of pregnant women with AMA and the change in the diagnostic criteria for GDM

Using Script Command to Conquer the Narrowband Constraint in Synchronous Long-distance Teaching System

Abstract: The applications of synchronous long-distance teaching (SLDT) are more and more valuable with the internet prevalence. One of the SLDT restrictions is the bandwidth consumption of the connection between teacher's side and students' sides. Even though most users use broadband network at present, there are still users using narrowband networks, such as dial-up and 3.5G network. It is very difficult to conduct SLDT in the narrowband network unless reducing the demands of network bandwidth consumption, especially while the teaching materials including video, audio, and so on. This paper proposes a novel scheme to reduce the network bandwidth requirement of SLDT efficiently. Original SLDT system transmits all teaching materials in full screen frames, so that it needs a great amount of network bandwidth. The proposed innovative technique encodes some of the teaching materials, including typing texts, messages on the electronic whiteboard, drawing pictures and timestamps into script commands. In this way, the encoded script commands are transmitted through the text channel of the multimedia streaming, while the audio and video channels carry the teacher's voice and images. When the students' sides receive the multimedia streaming, it is decoded back to the full screen frames. In this paper, the design of the encoder and decoder will be addressed in detail. The experimental results proved that our proposed scheme could reduce the demand of network bandwidth consumption efficaciously. Even at the dial-up and 3.5G network environment, students' sides could play the teaching frames very smoothly. That is, our implemented system could conquer the narrowband constraint and provide users to carry out SLDT in the narrowband network
