    The Relationship between Work Satisfaction and Service Satisfaction in Perspective of Financial Specialist-Customer Relationship

    This study is based on customer relationship management (CRM). The purpose of the study is to explore the relationship between customer relationship and job satisfaction of financial specialists in perspective of customer treatment satisfaction. The study on customer relationship is divided into five aspects, which are awareness, exploration, expansion, commitment, and dissolution. Job satisfaction is divided into two aspects including internal and external satisfaction. The relationship of the aspects is studied through questionnaires, descriptive statistics, and multiple regression analysis. Results show that CRM and the financial specialist’s satisfaction have significant effects to the financial specialists and customer relationship and the financial specialists and customers satisfaction. Therefore, we would propose to the decision-makers of banks the following recommendations on enforcement of CRM in banks and increase of the financial specialist’s work satisfaction

    As the Taiwanese government gradually opens up the country’s banking sector in recent years, the number of financial institutions of Taiwan has increased rapidly. Until the end of January 2010, the number of the domestic banks is up to 37, the average number of the customers served in each branch is less than 4,000. As all banks wish to be more competitive in such an environment, new advertising and marketing skills are taken. New banking services and technology are also provided in order to attract more customers.     Detection of mutations in symptomatic patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in Taiwan

    AbstractBackgroundHypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a common genetic cardiac disorder associated with sudden death, heart failure, and stroke. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence and types of mutations in symptomatic patients with HCM in Taiwan.MethodsThirty-eight HCM index patients (mean age 60±16 years) underwent systematic mutation screening of eight sarcomeric genes: β-myosin heavy chain (MYH7), myosin-binding protein C (MYBPC3), troponin T (TNNT2), troponin I (TNNI3), myosin ventricular regulatory light chain 2 (MYL2), myosin ventricular essential light chain 1 (MYL3), α-tropomyosin (TPM1), and cardiac α-actin (ACTC), using direct DNA sequencing. In silico programs predicted damaging amino acids. In the positive families, genotype–phenotype correlation studies were done.ResultsOverall, 13 mutations were identified in 13 index patients (34.2%). The three most frequently mutated genes were MYH7, MYBPC3, and TNNT2. One patient carried double mutations. Five mutations (MYH7 R147S; MYBPC3 R597Q; MYBPC3 W1007R; TNNI3 E124Q; MYL3 R63C) were novel; all were missense mutations. Analysis using in silico tools showed near consensus to classify these five novel mutations as pathological. Family pedigree analysis showed the presence of cosegregation in at least two affected members in each proband family, but incomplete penetrance in young family members with a positive genotype.ConclusionsWe identified 13 HCM pedigrees, including 5 carrying novel mutations and 1 with a double mutation. The three most commonly mutated genes were MYH7, MYBPC3, and TNNT2. These results, together with genetic counseling, could lead to earlier diagnosis and better management of family members at risk of HCM

    A novel randomly textured phosphor structure for highly efficient white light-emitting diodes

    We have successfully demonstrated the enhanced luminous flux and lumen efficiency in white light-emitting diodes by the randomly textured phosphor structure. The textured phosphor structure was fabricated by a simple imprinting technique, which does not need an expensive dry-etching machine or a complex patterned definition. The textured phosphor structure increases luminous flux by 5.4% and 2.5% at a driving current of 120 mA, compared with the flat phosphor and half-spherical lens structures, respectively. The increment was due to the scattering of textured surface and also the phosphor particles, leading to the enhancement of utilization efficiency of blue light. Furthermore, the textured phosphor structure has a larger view angle at the full width at half maximum (87°) than the reference LEDs

    High Glucose Induces VEGF-C Expression via the LPA1/3-Akt-ROS-LEDGF Signaling Axis in Human Prostate Cancer PC-3 Cells

    Background/Aims: Hyperglycemia has been shown to increase the incidence and metastasis in various types of cancers. However, the correlation between hyperglycemia and lymphatic metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) remains unclear. Our previous study demonstrated that lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) enhances vascular endothelial growth factor-C (VEGF-C) expression, a lymphangiogenic factor, through activating it receptors LPA1/3 in prostate cancer (PCa) cells. Moreover, hyperglycemia up-regulates autotaxin (ATX) expression, a LPA-generating enzyme. Therefore, we propose that high glucose promotes VEGF-C expression through LPA signaling in PCa cells. Methods: Pharmacological inhibitors and siRNAs were utilized to investigate the molecular mechanism of high glucose-induced VEGF-C expression. Real-time PCR and Western blot were used to determine the mRNA and protein expressions, respectively. Cellular bioenergetics analysis was performed to determine the glycolysis levels. Results: We demonstrated that the expressions of VEGF-C, ATX, and calreticulin were increased upon high glucose treatments in PC-3 cells. Moreover, high glucose-induced VEGF-C expression was mediated through the LPA1/3, PLC, Akt, ROS and LEDGF-dependent pathways. Additionally, high glucose enhanced the aerobic glycolysis via LPA1/3. Conclusion: These results indicated that hyperglycemia leads to LPA synthesis, and subsequent promoting pathological consequence of PCa. These novel findings could potentially provide new strategies for PCa treatments

    A fast-degrading thiol–acrylate based hydrogel for cranial regeneration

    Successful regeneration of the cranium in patients suffering from cranial bone defects is an integral step to restore craniofacial function. However, restoration of craniofacial structure has been challenging due to its complex geometry, limited donor site availability, and poor graft integration. To address these problems, we investigated the use of a thiol–acrylate hydrogel as a cell carrier to facilitate cranial regeneration. Thiol–acrylate hydrogels were formulated with 5–15 wt% poly(ethylene glycol)-diacrylate (PEGDA) and 1–9 mm dithiothreitol (DTT). The degradation rate, swelling ratio, and shear modulus of the resulting hydrogel were first characterized. Then, pre-osteoblast-like cells (MC3T3-E1) were encapsulated in the hydrogel and cultured for up to 21 d. Our results demonstrate that compared to samples formulated from 15 wt% PEGDA, 5 wt% PEGDA samples showed lower storage modulus at day 10 (0.7 kPa versus 8.3 kPa), 62.7% higher in weight change after soaking for 10 d. While the 5 wt% PEGDA group showed an 85% weight loss between day 10 and 21, the 15 wt% PEGDA group showed a 5% weight gain in the same time period. Cell viability with 15 wt% PEGDA and 5 mm DTT hydrogel decreased by 41.3% compared to 5 wt% PEGDA and 5mM DTT gel at day 7. However, histological analysis of cells after 21 d in culture revealed that they had pericellular mineral deposition indicating that the cells were differentiating into osteoblasts lineage in all experimental groups. This study shows that thiol–acrylate hydrogels can be tailored to achieve different degradation rates, in order to enhance cell viability and differentiation. Thus, the findings of this study provide a fundamental understanding for the application of thiol–acrylate hydrogels in cranial bone regeneration

    Prognostic factors associated with the survival of oral and pharyngeal carcinoma in Taiwan

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In Taiwan, a distinct ethnic group variation in incidence and mortality rates has been suggested for most carcinomas. Our aim is to identify the role of prognostic factors associated with the survival of oral and pharyngeal carcinoma in Taiwan.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Taiwan Cancer Registry records of 9039 subjects diagnosed with oral and pharyngeal carcinoma were analyzed. The population was divided into three ethnic groups by residence, which were Taiwanese aborigines, Hakka and Hokkien communities. Five-year survival rates were estimated by Kaplan-Meier methods. Ethnic curves differed significantly by log-rank test; therefore separate models for Taiwanese aborigines, Hakka and Hokkien were carried out. The Cox multivariate proportional hazards model was used to examine the role of prognostic factors on ethnic survival.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The five-year survival rates of oral and pharyngeal carcinoma were significantly poorer for Hokkien community (53.9%) and Taiwanese aborigines community (58.1%) compared with Hakka community (60.5%). The adjusted hazard ratio of Taiwanese aborigines versus Hakka was 1.07 (95%CI, 0.86–1.33) for oral and pharyngeal carcinoma mortality, and 1.16 (95%CI, 1.01–1.33) for Hokkien versus Hakka. Males had significantly poor prognosis than females. Subjects with tongue and/or mouth carcinoma presented the worst prognosis, whereas lip carcinoma had the best prognosis. Subjects with verrucous carcinoma had better survival than squamous cell carcinoma. Prognosis was the worst in elderly subjects, and subjects who underwent surgery had the highest survival rate.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our study presented that predictive variables in oral and pharyngeal carcinoma survival have been: ethnic groups, period of diagnosis, gender, diagnostic age, anatomic site, morphologic type, and therapy.</p

    Emerged HA and NA Mutants of the Pandemic Influenza H1N1 Viruses with Increasing Epidemiological Significance in Taipei and Kaohsiung, Taiwan, 2009–10

    The 2009 influenza pandemic provided an opportunity to observe dynamic changes of the hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) of pH1N1 strains that spread in two metropolitan areas -Taipei and Kaohsiung. We observed cumulative increases of amino acid substitutions of both HA and NA that were higher in the post–peak than in the pre-peak period of the epidemic. About 14.94% and 3.44% of 174 isolates had one and two amino acids changes, respective, in the four antigenic sites. One unique adaptive mutation of HA2 (E374K) was first detected three weeks before the epidemic peak. This mutation evolved through the epidemic, and finally emerged as the major circulated strain, with significantly higher frequency in the post-peak period than in the pre-peak (64.65% vs 9.28%, p<0.0001). E374K persisted until ten months post-nationwide vaccination without further antigenic changes (e.g. prior to the highest selective pressure). In public health measures, the epidemic peaked at seven weeks after oseltamivir treatment was initiated. The emerging E374K mutants spread before the first peak of school class suspension, extended their survival in high-density population areas before vaccination, dominated in the second wave of class suspension, and were fixed as herd immunity developed. The tempo-spatial spreading of E374K mutants was more concentrated during the post–peak (p = 0.000004) in seven districts with higher spatial clusters (p<0.001). This is the first study examining viral changes during the naïve phase of a pandemic of influenza through integrated virological/serological/clinical surveillance, tempo-spatial analysis, and intervention policies. The vaccination increased the percentage of E374K mutants (22.86% vs 72.34%, p<0.001) and significantly elevated the frequency of mutations in Sa antigenic site (2.36% vs 23.40%, p<0.001). Future pre-vaccination public health efforts should monitor amino acids of HA and NA of pandemic influenza viruses isolated at exponential and peak phases in areas with high cluster cases
