    Organizing for innovation: R&D projects, activities and partners

    We explore how R&D project characteristics condition the governance of an R&D project and its individual activities. Prior literature has tried to understand the factors - both at the industry and at the firm level - that influence the way in which firms partner for innovation. In this paper, through the analysis of detailed data from a subsidiary of STMicroelectronics, we identify the main drivers of partner selection for innovation. Partnering or contracting with universities for innovation is common practice for developing new -original- knowledge, as opposed to applying existing knowledge to a problem. But firms are more reluctant to partner, especially with other firms, when that knowledge directly enhances their competitiveness. However, conditional on cooperation, partners are more likely to act individually when the project is strategically important. Contracting for innovation to universities or research centers, as opposed to partnering, happens for more experimental projects, where highly original knowledge is developed, and typically early on in the project.Innovation strategy; Technological innovation; R&D projects' organization; Partner selection;

    The organization and performance evaluation of R&D projects in a dynamic environment

    Faster technological development, shorter product life-cycles, and more intense global competition have transformed the current competitive environment for most firms. This new competitive landscape forces organizations to actively acquire knowledge, as a firm's competitive advantage is now more dependent on continuous knowledge development and enhancement. Therefore, knowledge has become a central theme in strategic management. Against this background, we argue that the knowledge characteristics of R&D projects are fundamental variables to explain governance decisions. Drawing upon the case of STMicroelectronics, we provide evidence that partnering or contracting with universities for innovation is common practice for developing new -original- knowledge, as opposed to applying existing knowledge, for solving a problem. However, the firm is more reluctant to partner, especially with another firm, when this knowledge directly enhances its competitiveness. Moreover, we find that R&D project performance is a bi-dimensional construct. One dimension picks up project efficacy and immediate benefits, while the other includes learning and long-term benefits. Though spanning firm boundaries for innovation does not seem to have appreciable effects on perceived project efficiency, it nonetheless brings about intertemporal benefits related to learning and capabilities development. In a dynamic environment, building knowledge may be more important than protecting it.     Feeding Enrichment in a Captive Pack of European Wolves (Canis Lupus Lupus): Assessing the Effects on Welfare and on a Zoo's Recreational, Educational and Conservational Role

    This study investigated the effects of two feeding enrichment programs on the behaviour of a captive pack of European wolves (Canis lupus lupus) and their correlation with both zoo visitors' interest towards the exhibit and their overall perception of the species. Behavioural data (exploration, stereotypies, social interactions, activity/inactivity rates) were collected on four male wolves during four two-week long phases: initial control, hidden food, novel object, final control. Three observation sessions were performed daily: before, during and after feeding. Number of visitors and their permanence in front of the exhibit were recorded. After watching the wolves, visitors were asked to fill out a brief questionnaire in order to investigate their perception of captive wolf welfare, as well as their attitude towards wolf conservation issues. Despite the high inter-individual variability in their behavioural response, all wolves seemed to benefit from feeding enrichment. With regard to visitors, interest in the exhibit increased when enrichment was provided. Visitors' perception of the level of welfare of wolves improved if they attended a feeding session, especially during the novel object phase. Visitors' attitude towards wolf conservation issues also improved during feeding sessions, regardless of enrichment provision

    Plasma adiponectin: A contributing factor for cardiac changes in visceral obesity-associated hypertension

    This study has been designed to evaluate the impact of adiponectin levels on left ventricular geometry and function in visceral obesity-associated hypertension. 94 consecutive subjects, 53 of them were hypertensives and 41 normotensives with age <= 65 years, subgrouped according to the presence or absence of visceral obesity, were studied. Total adiponectin levels were measured by a validated competitive radioimmunoassay. Left ventricular telediastolic internal diameter, interventricular septum, posterior wall thickness, total left ventricular mass (LVM) and normalized for height to the 2.7 power (LVM/h(2.7)), relative wall thickness, left ventricular ejection fraction by echocardiography and isovolumic relaxation time, E/A ratio and deceleration time of E velocity, by pulsed-wave Doppler, were calculated. Plasma adiponectin levels were significantly lower in visceral obesity-associated hypertensives than lean hypertensives (p < 0.001) and in lean normotensives (p < 0.001). LVM and LVM/h(2.7) were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in both hypertensive groups, and in visceral obesity-associated normotensives in comparison with lean normotensives. Adiponectin levels correlated inversely with LVM/h(2.7) but only in normotensives (adjusted R squared 0.77, p < 0.0001) and hypertensives (0.67, p < 0.0001) subjects with visceral obesity. Multiple regression analysis indicated that adiponectin levels remain significantly associated (p < 0.001) to LVM/h(2.7) also when adjusted for age, gender, body mass index, waist to hip ratio and mean blood pressure. Our data suggest an important role of adiponectin in increased LVM/h(2.7) in visceral obesity-associated normotensive and hypertensive subjects.     Implementation of a Simulating Code for Heating and Cooling Networks for Residential, Commercial and Tertiary Buildings☆

    Abstract In the present energy scenario in which efficiency and sustainability will take the primary role in the decision making process it becomes more and more important to dispose of reliable simulating codes which allow to highlight the pros and cons of a given energy installation. New and old (forgotten) technologies are nowadays challenging the traditional technologies in different sectors of energy transformation from power generation down to heating and air conditioning. In the present situation of fuel cost oscillations and with the perspective of long-term scarcity of fuels, new, less energy demanding systems must be employed to maintain the actual comfort level. The present work aims at creating a reliable tool for correct evaluation of energy performance of heating and cooling networks. A code has been implemented in Simulink environment to simulate the network behaviour in summer and winter weather condition and to evaluate the primary energy indexes for comparison with the traditional configuration of a distributed heating and cooling plants common in residential, commercial and tertiary sectors. The code has been validated and the results will show the energy, economic and environment feasibility and convenience of one solution with respect to another for different climatic regions in Italy
