Kahoot! In an EFL Reading Class

Game-based learning has attracted considerable attention over the past few years. Mobile apps are welcomed by the digital generation. Debate continues regarding the approach that will most benefit students in English language classrooms, and the impact of mobile applications, particularly on English as a foreign language (EFL) learning, remains unclear. Specifically, little is known about EFL learners’ perceptions of mobile applications. The main purpose of this study was to understand Chinese students’ attitudes toward the application of Kahoot!, a mobile game-based learning app, in a college EFL class in Taiwan. No gender differences were found in students’ perceptions of the use of Kahoot! for English learning. Although the participants expressed positive attitudes towards the application of Kahoot! in the EFL reading class, several negative opinions were expressed regarding the use of Kahoot! as a testing tool. These results provide support for the affective filter hypothesis. Implications for EFL teachers and future research are discussed

Quantifying the economic potential of a biomass to olefin technology

Thesis (M. Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering, September 2005.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 39-40).Oil is one of the most valuable natural resources in the world. Any technology that could possibly be used to conserve oil is worth studying. Biomass waste to olefin (WTO) technology replaces the use of oil as a feedstock. WTO technology is actually a combination of two different processes: the waste to methanol (WTM) process and the methanol to olefins (MTO) process. However, WTO technology is still not commercially applied. Despite the environmentally beneficial advantages of biomass waste to olefins technology, the economic advantages or disadvantages still need to be explored further. This thesis tries to determine under what operating conditions (production volumes, feedstock prices, etc.) make the biomass waste to olefins technology most competitive. The WTM process is the economical limiting factor in the WTO technology. However, for relatively significant production volumes, the WTO technology is still competitive with a slight decrease in biomass feedstock price.by Nicholas Chiang.M.Eng

Licensing and Revenue Sharing for Digital Content Co-Production

Social media platforms foster creativity by helping creators monetize their content and resolving their disputes with copyright holders. These disputes often occur when content creators use prior work (e.g., musical works, movie or show clips, and video game plays) as baseline materials. We develop a content co-production mechanism for copyright owners to set a revenue-sharing split with content creators. Content creators, aiming for higher ad revenue, can dispute the copyright claim within a specific timeframe. We suggest how the proposed mechanism can help the two sides settle and avoid a trial in court with a sensible revenue-sharing ratio and dispute timeframe. We also show how the share of ad revenue can be made proportional to the contribution of the baseline materials

The Revolving Door: A Report on U.S. Hospital Readmissions

The U.S. health care system suffers from a chronic malady -- the revolving door syndrome at its hospitals. It is so bad that the federal government says one in five elderly patients is back in the hospital within 30 days of leaving. Some return trips are predictable elements of a treatment plan. Others are unplanned but difficult to prevent: patients go home, new and unexpected problems arise, and they require an immediate trip back to the hospital. But many of these readmissions can and should be prevented. They are the result of a fragmented system of care that too often leaves discharged patients to their own devices, unable to follow instructions they didn't understand, and not taking medications or getting the necessary follow-up care. The federal government has pegged the cost of readmissions for Medicare patients alone at 26billionannually,andsaysmorethan26 billion annually, and says more than 17 billion of it pays for return trips that need not happen if patients get the right care. This is one reason the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has identified avoidable readmissions as one of the leading problems facing the U.S. health care system and now penalizes hospitals with high rates of readmissions for their heart failure, heart attack, and pneumonia patients. This report is being released in conjunction with the Robert Wood John Foundation's Care About Your Care initiative, which is devoted to improving care transitions when people leave the hospital. It looks at the issue of readmissions in two ways: by the numbers and through the eyes of the people who live them
