Low cost silicon solar array project silicon materials task: Establishment of the feasibility of a process capable of low-cost, high volume production of silane (step 1) and the pyrolysis of silane to semiconductor-grade silicon (step 2)
A quartz fluid bed reactor capable of operating at temperatures of up to 1000 C was designed, constructed, and successfully operated. During a 30 minute experiment, silane was decomposed within the reactor with no pyrolysis occurring on the reactor wall or on the gas injection system. A hammer mill/roller-crusher system appeared to be the most practical method for producing seed material from bulk silicon. No measurable impurities were detected in the silicon powder produced by the free space reactor, using the cathode layer emission spectroscopic technique. Impurity concentration followed by emission spectroscopic examination of the residue indicated a total impurity level of 2 micrograms/gram. A pellet cast from this powder had an electrical resistivity of 35 to 45 ohm-cm and P-type conductivity
Detection of Optical Synchrotron Emission from the Radio Jet of 3C279
We report the detection of optical and ultraviolet emission from the
kiloparsec scale jet of the well-known quasar 3C~279. A bright knot, discovered
in archival V and U band {\it Hubble Space Telescope} Faint Object Camera
images, is coincident with a peak in the radio jet \sim0.6\arcsec from the
nucleus. The detection was also confirmed in Wide Field Planetary Camera-2
images. Archival Very Large Array and MERLIN radio data are also analyzed which
help to show that the high-energy optical/UV continuum, and spectrum, are
consistent with a synchrotron origin from the same population of relativistic
electrons responsible for the radio emission.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figs. accepted for publication in ApJL with minor

Controlled Quantum Secret Sharing
We present a new protocol in which a secret multiqubit quantum state
is shared by players and controllers, where
is the encoding state of a quantum secret sharing scheme. The players may be
considered as field agents responsible for carrying out a task, using the
secret information encrypted in , while the controllers are
superiors who decide if and when the task should be carried out and who to do
it. Our protocol only requires ancillary Bell states and Bell-basis
measurements.Comment: 6 pages, 0 figure, RevTeX4; published version with minor change
Structure of a liquid crystalline fluid around a macroparticle: Density functional theory study
The structure of a molecular liquid, in both the nematic liquid crystalline
and isotropic phases, around a cylindrical macroparticle, is studied using
density functional theory. In the nematic phase the structure of the fluid is
highly anisotropic with respect to the director, in agreement with results from
simulation and phenomenological theories. On going into the isotropic phase the
structure becomes rotationally invariant around the macroparticle with an
oriented layer at the surface.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figues. Submitted to Phys. Rev.

A Modified Synchrotron Model for Knots in the M87 Jet
For explaining the broadband spectral shape of knots in the M87 jet from
radio through optical to X-ray, we propose a modified synchrotron model that
considers the integrated effect of particle injection from different
acceleration sources in the thin acceleration region. This results in two break
frequencies at two sides of which the spectral index of knots in the M87 jet
changes. We discuss the possible implications of these results for the physical
properties in the M87 jet. The observed flux of the knots in the M87 jet from
radio to X-ray can be satisfactorily explained by the model, and the predicted
spectra from ultraviolet to X-ray could be further tested by future
observations. The model implies that the knots D, E, F, A, B, and C1 are
unlikely to be the candidate for the TeV emission recently detected in M87.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure, 2 tables, Accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
