Self-gravitating branes of codimension 4 in Lovelock gravity
We construct a familly of exact solutions of Lovelock equations describing
codimension four branes with discrete symmetry in the transverse space. Unlike
what is known from pure Einstein gravity, where such brane solutions of higher
codimension are singular, the solutions we find, for the complete Lovelock
theory, only present removable singularities. The latter account for a
localised tension-like energy-momentum tensor on the brane, in analogy with the
case of a codimension two self-gravitating cosmic string in pure Einstein
gravity. However, the solutions we discuss present two main distinctive
features : the tension of the brane receives corrections from the induced
curvature of the brane's worldsheet and, in a given Lovelock theory, the
spectrum of possible values of the tension is discrete. These solutions provide
a new framework for the study of higher codimension braneworlds.Comment: 22 page
Transgression forms and extensions of Chern-Simons gauge theories
A gauge invariant action principle, based on the idea of transgression forms,
is proposed. The action extends the Chern-Simons form by the addition of a
boundary term that makes the action gauge invariant (and not just
quasi-invariant). Interpreting the spacetime manifold as cobordant to another
one, the duplication of gauge fields in spacetime is avoided. The advantages of
this approach are particularly noticeable for the gravitation theory described
by a Chern-Simons lagrangian for the AdS group, in which case the action is
regularized and finite for black hole geometries in diverse situations. Black
hole thermodynamics is correctly reproduced using either a background field
approach or a background-independent setting, even in cases with asymptotically
nontrivial topologies. It is shown that the energy found from the thermodynamic
analysis agrees with the surface integral obtained by direct application of
Noether's theorem.Comment: 28 pages, no figures. Minor changes in the introduction, final

Non-extremal Stringy Black Hole
We construct a four-dimensional BPS saturated heterotic string solution from
the Taub-NUT solution. It is a non-extremal black hole solution since its Euler
number is non-zero. We evaluate its black hole entropy semiclassically. We
discuss the relation between the black hole entropy and the degeneracy of
string states. The entropy of our string solution can be understood as the
microscopic entropy which counts the elementary string states without any
complications.Comment: 18 pages, Late
Chern-Simons Invariants of Torus Links
We compute the vacuum expectation values of torus knot operators in
Chern-Simons theory, and we obtain explicit formulae for all classical gauge
groups and for arbitrary representations. We reproduce a known formula for the
HOMFLY invariants of torus links and we obtain an analogous formula for
Kauffman invariants. We also derive a formula for cable knots. We use our
results to test a recently proposed conjecture that relates HOMFLY and Kauffman
invariants.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures; v2: minor changes, version submitted to AHP. The

Research of Gravitation in Flat Minkowski Space
In this paper it is introduced and studied an alternative theory of
gravitation in flat Minkowski space. Using an antisymmetric tensor, which is
analogous to the tensor of electromagnetic field, a non-linear connection is
introduced. It is very convenient for studying the perihelion/periastron shift,
deflection of the light rays near the Sun and the frame dragging together with
geodetic precession, i.e. effects where angles are involved. Although the
corresponding results are obtained in rather different way, they are the same
as in the General Relativity. The results about the barycenter of two bodies
are also the same as in the General Relativity. Comparing the derived equations
of motion for the -body problem with the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann equations,
it is found that they differ from the EIH equations by Lorentz invariant terms
of order .Comment: 28 page
Colossal dielectric constants in transition-metal oxides
Many transition-metal oxides show very large ("colossal") magnitudes of the
dielectric constant and thus have immense potential for applications in modern
microelectronics and for the development of new capacitance-based
energy-storage devices. In the present work, we thoroughly discuss the
mechanisms that can lead to colossal values of the dielectric constant,
especially emphasising effects generated by external and internal interfaces,
including electronic phase separation. In addition, we provide a detailed
overview and discussion of the dielectric properties of CaCu3Ti4O12 and related
systems, which is today's most investigated material with colossal dielectric
constant. Also a variety of further transition-metal oxides with large
dielectric constants are treated in detail, among them the system La2-xSrxNiO4
where electronic phase separation may play a role in the generation of a
colossal dielectric constant.Comment: 31 pages, 18 figures, submitted to Eur. Phys. J. for publication in

Inherited variants in CHD3 show variable expressivity in Snijders Blok-Campeau syndrome
Purpose: Common diagnostic next-generation sequencing strategies are not optimized to identify inherited variants in genes associated with dominant neurodevelopmental disorders as causal when the transmitting parent is clinically unaffected, leaving a significant number of cases with neurodevelopmental disorders undiagnosed. Methods: We characterized 21 families with inherited heterozygous missense or protein-truncating variants in CHD3, a gene in which de novo variants cause Snijders Blok-Campeau syndrome. Results: Computational facial and Human Phenotype Ontology–based comparisons showed that the phenotype of probands with inherited CHD3 variants overlaps with the phenotype previously associated with de novo CHD3 variants, whereas heterozygote parents are mildly or not affected, suggesting variable expressivity. In addition, similarly reduced expression levels of CHD3 protein in cells of an affected proband and of healthy family members with a CHD3 protein-truncating variant suggested that compensation of expression from the wild-type allele is unlikely to be an underlying mechanism. Notably, most inherited CHD3 variants were maternally transmitted. Conclusion: Our results point to a significant role of inherited variation in Snijders Blok-Campeau syndrome, a finding that is critical for correct variant interpretation and genetic counseling and warrants further investigation toward understanding the broader contributions of such variation to the landscape of human disease

Applications of one-dimensional models in simplified inelastic analyses. [LMFBR]
This paper presents an approximate inelastic analysis based on geometric simplification with emphasis on its applicability, modeling, and the method of defining the loading conditions. Two problems are investigated: a one-dimensional axisymmetric model of generalized plane strain thick-walled cylinder is applied to the primary sodium inlet nozzle of the Clinch River Breeder Reactor Intermediate Heat Exchanger (CRBRP-IHX), and a finite cylindrical shell is used to simulate the branch shell forging (Y) junction. The results are then compared with the available detailed inelastic analyses under cyclic loading conditions in terms of creep and fatigue damages and inelastic ratchetting strains per the ASME Code Case N-47 requirements. In both problems, the one-dimensional simulation is able to trace the detailed stress-strain response. The quantitative comparison is good for the nozzle, but less satisfactory for the Y junction. Refinements are suggested to further improve the simulation
