Systematic Review of Medicine-Related Problems in Adult Patients with Atrial Fibrillation on Direct Oral Anticoagulants

New oral anticoagulant agents continue to emerge on the market and their safety requires assessment to provide evidence of their suitability for clinical use. There-fore, we searched standard databases to summarize the English language literature on medicine-related problems (MRPs) of direct oral anticoagulants DOACs (dabigtran, rivaroxban, apixban, and edoxban) in the treatment of adults with atri-al fibrillation. Electronic databases including Medline, Embase, International Pharmaceutical Abstract (IPA), Scopus, CINAHL, the Web of Science and Cochrane were searched from 2008 through 2016 for original articles. Studies pub-lished in English reporting MRPs of DOACs in adult patients with AF were in-cluded. Seventeen studies were identified using standardized protocols, and two reviewers serially abstracted data from each article. Most articles were inconclusive on major safety end points including major bleeding. Data on major safety end points were combined with efficacy. Most studies inconsistently reported adverse drug reactions and not adverse events or medication error, and no definitions were consistent across studies. Some harmful drug effects were not assessed in studies and may have been overlooked. Little evidence is provided on MRPs of DOACs in patients with AF and, therefore, further studies are needed to establish the safety of DOACs in real-life clinical practice

MAW: a reliable lightweight multi-hop wireless sensor network routing protocol

Wireless sensor networks consist of a number of small wireless sensor nodes which take measurements and transmit them over wireless links. As wireless sensors are resource constrained, the usage of energy and memory must be done wisely to increase the lifetime of nodes. It is also necessary to deliver data reliably to make any application more useful to the end user. A reliable and lightweight routing protocol for wireless sensor networks is presented in this paper. The protocol shows more than 90% savings in number of transmissions compared to the message flooding scheme when the same route is used to transmit data messages. This saving increases exponentially as the number of transmissions increases over a same route. The protocol occupies only 16% of total available RAM and 12% of total program memory in MICAz platform which makes it very lightweight to implement in wireless sensor networks. Its self healing capability to recover from livelock and deadlock enhances its reliability as a routing protocol in wireless sensor networks

Paenibacillus taichungensis sp nov., from soil in Taiwan

Among a large collection of Taiwanese soil isolates, a novel Gram-variable, rod-shaped, motile, endospore-forming bacterial strain, strain V10537(T), was subjected to a polyphasic study including 16S rRNA and gyrB gene sequence analysis, DNA-DNA hybridization experiments, cell wall peptidoglycan type, cellular fatty acid composition analysis and comparative phenotypic characterization. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that the organism belonged to the genus Paenibacillus. Strain V10537(T) possessed meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid of the peptidoglycan. It contained menaquinone MK-7 as the predominant isoprenoid quinone and anteiso-C(15:0),0 (53.6%) and C(16:0) (19.0%) as the major fatty acids. Phylogenetically, the most closely related species to strain V10537(T) were Paenibacillus pabuli, Paenibacillus xylanilyticus, Paenibaciflus amylolyticus, Paenibacillus barcinonensis and Paenibacillus illinoisensis, with 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of 99.5, 98.8, 98.3, 98.2 and 98.1 % to the respective type strains. The gyrB gene sequence similarities between strain V10537(T) and these strains were 76.9-85.0%. DNA-DNA hybridization experiments showed levels of relatedness of 8.5-45.6 % between strain V10537(T) and these strains. The DNA G + C content of strain V10537(T) was 46.7 mol%. Strain V10537(T) was clearly distinguishable from other Paenibacillus species and thus represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus taichungensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is V10537(T) (=BCRC 17757(T) = DSM 19942(T))

Mechanical drilling processes for titanium alloys: a literature review

Titanium and its alloys (Ti) are attractive for many applications due to their superior properties. However, they are regarded as hard-to-machine materials. Drilling is an important machining process since it is involved in nearly all Ti applications. It is desirable to develop cost-effective drilling processes for Ti and/or improve the cost-effectiveness of currently-available processes. Such development and improvement will be benefited by a comprehensive literature review of drilling processes for Ti. This paper presents a literature review on mechanical drilling processes for Ti, namely, twist drilling, vibration assisted twist drilling, ultrasonic machining, and rotary ultrasonic machining. It discusses cutting force, cutting temperature, tool wear and tool life, hole quality (diameter and cylindricity, surface roughness, and burr), and chip type when drilling of Ti using these processes
