    A Computer-Aided Training (CAT) System for Short Track Speed Skating

    Short track speed skating has become popular all over the world. The demands of a computer-aided training (CAT) system are booming due to this fact. However, the existing commercial systems for sports are highly dependent on expensive equipment and complicated hardware calibration. This dissertation presents a novel CAT system for tracking multiple skaters in short track skating competitions. Aiming at the challenges, we utilize global rink information to compensate camera motion and obtain the global spatial information of skaters; apply Random Forest to fuse multiple cues and predict the blobs for each of the skaters; and finally develop a silhouette and edge-based template matching and blob growing method to allocate each blob to corresponding skaters. The proposed multiple skaters tracking algorithm organically integrates multi-cue fusion, dynamic appearance modeling, machine learning, etc. to form an efficient and robust CAT system. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method are presented through experiments

    Estimation of EMG-Based force using a neural-network-based approach

The dynamics of human arms has a high impact on the humans' activities in daily life, especially when a human operates a tool such as interactions with a robot with the need for high dexterity. The dexterity of human arms depends largely on motor functionality of muscle. In this sense, the dynamics of human arms should be well analyzed. In this paper, in order to analyse the characteristic of human arms, a neural-network-based algorithm is proposed for exploring the potential model between electromyography (EMG) signal and human arm's force. Based on the analysis of force for humans, the mean absolute value of the electromyographic signal is selected as the input for the potential model. In this paper, in order to accurately estimate the potential model, three domains fuzzy wavelet neural network (TDFWNN) algorithm without prior knowledge of the biomechanical model is utilized. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been demonstrated by the experimental results in comparison with the conventional radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) method. By comparison, the proposed TDFWNN algorithm provides an effective solution to evaluate the influence of human factors based on biological signals

    Subsampling Error in Stochastic Gradient Langevin Diffusions

    The Stochastic Gradient Langevin Dynamics (SGLD) are popularly used to approximate Bayesian posterior distributions in statistical learning procedures with large-scale data. As opposed to many usual Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms, SGLD is not stationary with respect to the posterior distribution; two sources of error appear: The first error is introduced by an Euler--Maruyama discretisation of a Langevin diffusion process, the second error comes from the data subsampling that enables its use in large-scale data settings. In this work, we consider an idealised version of SGLD to analyse the method's pure subsampling error that we then see as a best-case error for diffusion-based subsampling MCMC methods. Indeed, we introduce and study the Stochastic Gradient Langevin Diffusion (SGLDiff), a continuous-time Markov process that follows the Langevin diffusion corresponding to a data subset and switches this data subset after exponential waiting times. There, we show that the Wasserstein distance between the posterior and the limiting distribution of SGLDiff is bounded above by a fractional power of the mean waiting time. Importantly, this fractional power does not depend on the dimension of the state space. We bring our results into context with other analyses of SGLD

    Functional Mapping of Three-Dimensional Electrical Activation in Ventricles

Advisor: Bin He. 1 computer file (PDF); 139 pages.Ventricular arrhythmias account for nearly 400,000 deaths per year in the United States alone. Electrical mapping of the ventricular activation could facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of arrhythmias, e.g. guiding catheter ablation. To date, both direct mapping and non-contact mapping techniques have been routinely used in electrophysiology labs for obtaining the electrical activity on the endocardial surface. Non-invasive functional mapping methods are also developed to estimate the electrical activity on the epicardium or on both epicardium and endocardium from the body surface measurements. Though successful, the results using above methods are all limited on the surface of the heart and thus cannot directly characterize the cardiac events originating within the myocardial wall. Our group's goal is to develop a functional mapping method to estimate the three-dimensional cardiac electrical activity from either non-invasive body surface potential maps or minimally-invasive intracavitary potential maps, by solving the so-called "inverse problem". Hence the information under the surface of the heart could be revealed to better characterize the cardiac activation. In the present thesis study, the previously developed three-dimensional cardiac electrical imaging (3DCEI) approach has been further investigated. Its function is expanded for not only estimating the global activation sequence but also reconstructing the potential at any myocardial site throughout the ventricle. New algorithms under the 3DCEI scheme are also explored for more powerful mapping capability. The performance of the enhanced 3DCEI approach is rigorously evaluated in both control and diseased swine models when the clinical settings are mimicked. The promising results validate the feasibility of estimating detailed three-dimensional cardiac activation by using the 3DCEI approach, and suggest that 3DCEI has great potential of guiding the clinical management of cardiac arrhythmias in a more efficient way
