ObjectivesThe aim of this article was to compare the differences between Intergrowth-21st (IG-21) and Fenton growth standards in the classification of intrauterine and extrauterine growth restriction (EUGR) in eastern Chinese preterm infants, and detect which one can better relate to neonatal diseases and predict the physical growth outcomes at 3–5 years old.MethodsPremature infants admitted to a tertiary pediatric hospital in Shanghai, China, from 2016 to 2018 were enrolled. Prenatal information, neonatal diseases during hospitalization, and anthropometric data (weight, height, and head circumference) at birth and at discharge were collected and analyzed. Physical growth outcomes (short stature, thinness, and overweight) were examined by telephone investigations in 2021 at age 3–5 years.ResultsThe medium gestational age and birth weight of the included 1,065 preterm newborns were 33.6 weeks and 1,900 g, respectively. The IG-21 curves diagnosed more newborns with small for gestational age (SGA) (19% vs. 14.7%) and fewer newborns with longitudinal EUGR on height (25.5% vs. 27.9%) and head circumference (17.9% vs. 24.7%) compared to Fenton curves. Concordances between Fenton and IG-21 standards were substantial or almost perfect in the classification of SGA and longitudinal EUGR, but minor in cross-sectional EUGR. EUGR identified by Fenton curves was better related to neonatal diseases than IG-21 curves. There were no statistical significances in the prediction of short stature, thinness, and overweight at 3–5 years old between the two charts.ConclusionsIG-21 growth standards are not superior to Fenton in assessing preterm growth and development in the eastern Chinese population

A statistical approach for neural network pruning with application to internet of things

Abstract Pruning is showing huge potential for compressing and accelerating deep neural networks by eliminating redundant parameters. Along with more terminal chips integrated with AI accelerators for internet of things (IoT) devices, structured pruning is gaining popularity with the edge computing research area. Different from filter pruning and group-wise pruning, stripe-wise pruning (SWP) conducts pruning at the level of stripes in each filter. By introducing filter skeleton (FS) to each stripe, the existing SWP method sets an absolute threshold for the values in FS and removes the stripes whose corresponding values in FS could not meet the threshold. Starting with investigation into the process of stripe wise convolution, we use the statistical properties of the weights located on each stripe to learn the importance between those stripes in a filter and remove stripes with low importance. Our pruned VGG-16 achieves the existing results by a fourfold reduction in parameter with only 0.4% decrease in accuracy. Results from comprehensive experiments on IoT devices are also presented

Biophysical properties as determinants for soil organic carbon and total nitrogen in grassland salinization.

Grassland salinization causes considerable changes to soil and vegetation, which can lead to changes in soil organic carbon (C) and total nitrogen (N). These changes have complex causal relationships. A significant correlation between soil organic C and total N and any soil or vegetation property does not necessarily imply a significant direct effect of the property on soil organic C and total N. In this study, a field survey was conducted to investigate the changes in soil organic C and total N in grassland along a salinity gradient in Hexi corridor, China, and the direct and indirect effects of soil and vegetation properties on both stocks were quantified using a path analysis approach. Significant decrease in soil organic C and total N contents were observed with increasing salinity. Both had significant positive correlations with the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), soil water, and fine particles (silt+clay) content (p<0.01) and significant negative correlations with soil EC, and sand content (p<0.01). NDVI, fine particles content and soil water content had positive direct effects on soil organic C and total N stocks. Soil EC affected soil organic C and total N stocks mainly through its indirect negative effect on NDVI, soil texture, and water content. NDVI, soil texture, and moisture also indirectly affected soil organic C and total N stocks via changes in each other. These indirect effects augmented each other, although in some cases indirect effects worked in opposing directions

Characterization of the extra copy of TPOX locus with tri-allelic pattern

Abstract Background An STR locus with tri-allelic pattern is occasionally observed in routine forensic casework. The extra copy of TPOX locus with tri-allelic pattern in populations has been assumed to be inserted into an X chromosome, which took place forth before the Bantu expansion in Africa. Nonetheless, the exact location of the duplication and the form of rearrangement in the human genome has not been clarified yet. Results In this study, we investigated the extra copy of type 2 tri-allelic pattern at TPOX in various populations. While allele 10 is the major third allele in Africa, allele 11 appears more frequent in America and overwhelming in Chinese and Korean populations, which might attribute to the population substructures. Results from the investigation of family cases showed that the transmission of the extra allele had a similar genetic pattern of autosomal genes. Furthermore, a whole-genome sequencing followed by bioinformatics analysis revealed that the intact form of chromosomal duplication and rearrangement occurred ~ 407 kb away from the authentic TPOX locus on chromosome 2 in two cases. The breakpoints of the insertion were further validated in most other tri-allelic subjects, which can imply the identical origin from the ancestral extra copy. Nevertheless, de novo chromosomal duplication and rearrangement at thyroid peroxidase gene occur in populations. Conclusions Instead of the extra allele 10 in African populations, the main third allele at TPOX with tri-allelic pattern is allele 11 in Chinese and Korean populations. The insertion of the extra copy into chromosome 2 occurs in most subjects with tri-allelic pattern at TPOX and demonstrates the transmission of the third allele from parents to offspring. The breakpoints of the ancestral extra copy are defined, which shows evidence of its inheritance from African populations. In addition, the simple validation method would help improve tri-allelic pattern calling, distinguish de novo chromosomal rearrangements, and also count the frequencies among different geographic regions. Therefore, the statistical interpretation of tri-allelic pattern at TPOX could be enhanced during forensic practice
