    Auto-adhesive transdermal drug delivery patches using beetle inspired micropillar structures

    The patch described in this paper combines the principles of wet adhesion, which is a widely adopted biological adhesion system in nature, with transdermal drug delivery. A biologically inspired micropillar patch was fabricated that is self-adhesive, reusable, and can sustain a controlled drug release. We successfully preloaded the commercial non-steroidal anti-inflammatory generic drug unguents indomethacin, ketoprofen, diclofenac sodium and etofenamate into a polydimethylsiloxane elastomeric matrix and fabricated drug-containing micropillar patches. When examining the drug release kinetics and friction of the patches, we observed that these drug unguents can be released calculably and regularly for several days. Additionally, the drug unguents released from the patch to its attached surface are critical to increase the strength of the patch's adhesion, which is based on capillary attractive forces and is inspired by beetle feet. Here, we create a novel system combining biomimetics and drug delivery that can be modified for use across the biomedical and engineering spectra. Motivation: the objective of the present study was to characterize a micropillar PDMS patch that was inspired by a beetle's wet adhesion as a platform for conducting in vitro release studies. Commercially available non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) were used as the model drugs for our delivery systems.     Online Self-Concordant and Relatively Smooth Minimization, With Applications to Online Portfolio Selection and Learning Quantum States

    Consider an online convex optimization problem where the loss functions are self-concordant barriers, smooth relative to a convex function hh, and possibly non-Lipschitz. We analyze the regret of online mirror descent with hh. Then, based on the result, we prove the following in a unified manner. Denote by TT the time horizon and dd the parameter dimension. 1. For online portfolio selection, the regret of EG~\widetilde{\text{EG}}, a variant of exponentiated gradient due to Helmbold et al., is O~(T2/3d1/3)\tilde{O} ( T^{2/3} d^{1/3} ) when T>4d/logdT > 4 d / \log d. This improves on the original O~(T3/4d1/2)\tilde{O} ( T^{3/4} d^{1/2} ) regret bound for EG~\widetilde{\text{EG}}. 2. For online portfolio selection, the regret of online mirror descent with the logarithmic barrier is O~(Td)\tilde{O}(\sqrt{T d}). The regret bound is the same as that of Soft-Bayes due to Orseau et al. up to logarithmic terms. 3. For online learning quantum states with the logarithmic loss, the regret of online mirror descent with the log-determinant function is also O~(Td)\tilde{O} ( \sqrt{T d} ).     THE VARIATION OF DOMINANT ELBOW RANGE OF MOTION AMONG DIFFERENT MATURE STAGE FOR BASEBALL PITCHERS

    The purpose of this study was to examine the variation of elbow range of motion (ROM) in the dominant arm between different maturity levels in baseball pitchers. Sixty-two pitchers, including 17 early-puberty players, 22 later-puberty players, and 23 adult players, participated in this study. A goniometer was used to assess elbow ROM in the dominant arms, including elbow flexion, hyper-extension, supination, pronation and valgus angles.     Resource Slack, Innovation Ambidexterity, and Quality Performance: Knowledge Heterogeneity Perspective

    Abstract. Resource slack and innovation ambidexterity can both be represented and connected conceptually with heterogeneous knowledge structure. Hypothesizing with the logic of knowledge heterogeneity, the present study empirically examined ambidexterity’s mediation effect in the relationship between two forms of resource slacks (i.e., human and financial resources) and product quality. Companies in Taiwanese manufacturing industry were located based on the random inspection conducted by the Department of Budget, Accounting and Statistics of the Government in 2011, and surveyed. Our findings demonstrated that slack resource is only an indirect factor for product quality evaluated by internal developers and producers (i.e. development and delivery processes) and external customers (product-specific quality). Specifically, first, different resource slacks influence differently on ambidexterity; second, both exploration and exploitation positively influence quality of innovation; third, ambidexterity plays a significant mediator’s role that may strategically alter the relationship between slack and quality. Research has paid increasing attention to ambidexterity (i.e., exploration and exploitation) in organizational innovation. Mostly, however, focus on the influencing factors leading to possible ambidextrous design or implementation of innovation.     Compact Dual-Band Dipole Antenna with Asymmetric Arms for WLAN Applications

    A dual-band dipole antenna that consists of a horn- and a C-shaped metallic arm is presented. Depending on the asymmetric arms, the antenna provides two −10 dB impedance bandwidths of 225 MHz (about 9.2% at 2.45 GHz) and 1190 MHz (about 21.6% at 5.5 GHz), respectively. This feature enables it to cover the required bandwidths for wireless local area network (WLAN) operation at the 2.4 GHz band and 5.2/5.8 GHz bands for IEEE 802.11 a/b/g standards. More importantly, the compact size (7 mm × 24 mm) and good radiating performance of the antenna are profitable to be integrated with wireless communication devices on restricted RF-elements spaces
