    Phase transitions in rotating neutron stars: Effects of stellar crusts

    As a rapidly rotating neutron star spins down due to the loss of its angular momentum, its central density increases and the nuclear matter in its core converts to quark matter, which leads to a drastic decrease of the stellar moment of inertia, and even results in an era of spin-up of the pulsar (Glendenning, Pei, & Weber 1997). We find that given a certain equation of state in the liquid core, even if the backbending of the moment of inertia as a function of the rotating frequency occurs, an increase of the total moment of inertia by only 1% could carry adequate angular momentum and stop the star spin-up. This small discrepancy in the total moment of inertia might be due to the different properties of subnuclear matter in the crust, especially to different transition density and pressure at the inner boundary of the solid crust between various models. The strong dependence of the phenomenon of back-bending on the physical state of the crust provides, in principle, a new observational approach to check and constrain theories on subnuclear matter.published_or_final_versio

    Early re-brightenings in GRB afterglows as signatures of low-to-high density boundary

    The association of long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with star forming regions and the idea of massive stars as progenitors of GRBs are widely accepted. Because of their short lifetimes, it is very likely that massive stars are still embedded in dense molecular clouds when they give birth to GRBs. Stellar winds from GRB progenitors can create low-density bubbles with sizes and densities strongly depending on the initial ambient density. A boundary between the bubble and the dense molecular cloud must exist with the density at the boundary increasing from that of the bubble to that of the outer cloud. We have calculated the lightcurves of the afterglows in such environments with three regions: the stellar wind region, the boundary, and the molecular cloud. We show that the interaction between the cylindrical jet and the density boundary can result in a re-brightening of the afterglow occurring as early as ∌1 day after the GRB. We compare our models with the optical afterglows of GRB 970508, GRB 000301C, and GRB 030226. We find that the values of our model parameters, including the radius of the wind bubble, the densities in the bubble and in the outer molecular cloud are within typical ranges. © 2005 Elsevier B.V.     Variation of microphysics in wind bubbles: an alternative mechanism for explaining the rebrightenings in Gamma-ray burst afterglows

    Conventionally, long Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are thought to be caused by the core collapses of massive stars. During the lifetime of a massive star, a stellar wind bubble environment should be produced. Furthermore, the microphysics shock parameters may vary along with the evolution of the fireball. Here, we investigate the variation of the microphysics shock parameters under the condition of wind bubble environment, and allow the microphysics shock parameters to be discontinuous at shocks in the ambient medium. It is found that our model can acceptably reproduce the rebrightenings observed in GRB afterglows, at least in some cases. The effects of various model parameters on rebrightenings are investigated. The rebrightenings observed in both the R-band and X-ray afterglow light curves of GRB 060206, GRB 070311 and GRB 071010A are reproduced in this model. © 2009 The Authors.     Tests of scaling assumputions, construct validity and reliability of the Chinese child health questionnaire, partent form (CHQ-PF50) and child form (CHQ-CF87)

    Poster SessionValidated instruments for assessment of quality of life in Chinese children are as yet unavailable. We determined the construct validity and reliability of the translated Chinese versions of the Child Health Questionnaires (Landgraf, Abetz & Ware, 1999) designed for completion by parents (CHQ-PF50) and children (CHQ-CF87). The Chinese versions were developed through iterative forward and backward translation processes by independent parties. The feasibility, as rated by degree of difficulty using a 4-point scale, and time for completion were evaluated for the Chinese CHQ-PF50 and CHQ-CF87 in 15 and 11 subjects, respectively. To assess the construct validity and reliability, 1143 parents of healthy children and 823 school children were invited to complete the Chinese CHQ-PF50 and CHQ-CF87, respectively. The results showed that both the Chinese CHQ-PF50 (mean rating 1.66) and CHQ-CF87 (mean rating 1.33) were easy to complete, with completion times of 14.23±5.23 minutes and 13.82±3.52 minutes, respectively. Psychometric analysis on item convergent validity and discriminant validity showed perfect or near perfect (>99%) rates of success for all ten scales in the CF87 and >94% for all but one scale in the PF50. The exception was the general health scale (86%). Minimal floor effects were observed for both questionnaires. However, substantial ceiling effects were observed for the five scales in both questionnaires (physical functioning, role-emotional, behavioral, role-physical, bodily pain and family activities). The median alpha coefficient of reliability for CF87 was 0.90 (range 0.85 to 0.94). The median alpha coefficient for PF50 was 0.80 (range 0.44 to 0.88), with the mental health scale falling just below the minimum criterion for group level analysis (0.68) and the general health scale being the lowest (0.44). These findings suggest that the Chinese translations of CHQ-PF50 and CHQ-CF87 are robust and sufficient. Additional work with regard to ceiling effects is required to assess the performance of the measures in condition groups

    What do Îł\gamma-ray bursts look like?

    There have been great and rapid progresses in the field of Îł\gamma-ray bursts (denoted as GRBs) since BeppoSAX and other telescopes discovered their afterglows in 1997. Here, we will first give a brief review on the observational facts of GRBs and direct understanding from these facts, which lead to the standard fireball model. The dynamical evolution of the fireball is discussed, especially a generic model is proposed to describe the whole dynamical evolution of GRB remnant from highly radiative to adiabatic, and from ultra-relativistic to non-relativistic phase. Then, Various deviations from the standard model are discussed to give new information about GRBs and their environment. In order to relax the energy crisis, the beaming effects and their possible observational evidences are also discussed in GRB's radiations.Comment: 10 pages, Latex.     Growth suppressive effect of pegylated arginase in malignant pleural mesothelioma xenografts

    BACKGROUND: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a difficult-to-treat global disease. Pegylated arginase (BCT-100) has recently shown anti-tumor effects in hepatocellular carcinoma, acute myeloid leukemia and melanoma. This study aims to investigate the effects of PEG-BCT-100 in MPM. METHODS: A panel of 5 mesothelioma cell lines (H28, 211H, H226, H2052 and H2452) was used to study the in vitro effects of BCT-100 by crystal violet staining. The in vivo effects of BCT-100 were studied using 211H and H226 nude mice xenografts. Protein expression (argininosuccinate synthetase, ornithine transcarbamylase, cleaved PARP, cleaved caspase 3, cyclins (A2, D3, E1 and H), CDK4 and Ki67) and arginine concentration were evaluated by Western blot and ELISA respectively. Cellular localization of BCT-100 was detected by immunohistochemistry and immunoflorescence. TUNEL assay was used to identify cellular apoptotic events. RESULTS: Argininosuccinate synthetase was expressed in H28, H226, and H2452 cells as well as 211H and H266 xenografts. Ornithine transcarbamylase was undetectable in all cell lines and xenograft models. BCT-100 reduced in vitro cell viability (IC50 values at 13-24 mU/ml, 72 h) across different cell lines and suppressed tumor growth in both 211H and H226 xenograft models. BCT-100 (60 mg/kg) significantly suppressed tumor growth (p < 0.01) with prolonged median survival (p < 0.01) in both xenograft models. Combining BCT-100 with pemetrexed or cisplatin conferred no additional benefits over single agents. Serum and intratumoral arginine levels were effectively decreased by BCT-100, associated with cytosolic accumulation of BCT-100 within tumor cells. Apoptosis (PARP cleavage in 211H xenografts; Bcl-2 downregulation, and cleavage of PARP and caspase 3 in H226 xenografts; positive TUNEL staining in both) and G1 arrest (downregulation of cyclin A2, D3, E1 and CDK4 in 211H xenografts; suppression of cyclin A2, E1, H and CDK4 in H226 xenografts) were evident with BCT-100 treatment. Furthermore, proliferative factor Ki67 was downregulated in BCT-100 treatments arms. CONCLUSIONS: BCT-100 suppressed tumor growth with prolonged median survival partially mediated by intratumoral arginine depletion resulting in apoptosis and G1 arrest in mesothelioma xenograft models.     The Association between Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Gut Microbiota Composition in Premenopausal Women

    The aim of this study was to investigate the association between cardiorespiratory fitness and gut microbiota composition in premenopausal women. The participants consisted of 71 premenopausal Finnish women ( aged 19-49 years). Gut microbiota were analyzed using flow cytometry, 16S rRNA gene hybridization and DNA-staining. Maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) was assessed by respiratory gas analyzer and body composition by Bioimpdance. We found that participants with low VO2max had lower Bacteroides, but higher Eubacterium rectale-Clostridium coccoides than the high VO2max group (p < 0.05 for all). VO2max was inversely associated with EreC (r = 0.309, p = 0.01) but not with other bacteria. VO2max also negatively correlated with fat% (r = 0.755, p < 0.001), triglycerides (r = -0.274, p = 0.021) and leptin (r = -0.574, p < 0.001). By contrast, EreC was positively associated with fat% (r = 0.382, p = 0.002), dietary fat intake (r = 0.258, p = 0.034), triglycerides (r = 0.390, p = 0.002) and leptin (r = 0.424, p = 0.001), but negatively with carbohydrate intake (r = -0.252, p = 0.034) and HDL (r = -0.26, p = 0.028). After adjusting for age and dietary intake, all the significant associations remained. However, after adjusting for fat%, the associations between VO2max and EreC disappeared. Our results suggest that cardiorespiratory fitness is associated with gut microbiota composition, independent of age and carbohydrate or fat intake. The association between VO2max and EreC, however, appears to be mediated by body fatness

    Search for electric dipole moments at storage rings

    Permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) violate parity and time reversal symmetry. Within the Standard Model (SM) they are many orders of magnitude below present experimental sensitivity. Many extensions of the SM predict much larger EDMs, which are therefore an excellent probe for the existence of "new physics". Until recently it was believed that only electrically neutral systems could be used for sensitive searches of EDMs. With the introduction of a novel experimental method, high precision for charged systems will be within reach as well.     A patient with asymptomatic severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and antigenemia from the 2003-2004 community outbreak of SARS in Guangzhou, China.

    An asymptomatic case of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) occurred early in 2004, during a community outbreak of SARS in Guangzhou, China. This was the first time that a case of asymptomatic SARS was noted in an individual with antigenemia and seroconversion. The asymptomatic case patient and the second index case patient with SARS in the 2003-2004 outbreak both worked in the same restaurant, where they served palm civets, which were found to carry SARS-associated coronaviruses. Epidemiological information and laboratory findings suggested that the findings for the patient with asymptomatic infection, together with the findings from previously reported serological analyses of handlers of wild animals and the 4 index case patients from the 2004 community outbreak, reflected a likely intermediate phase of animal-to-human transmission of infection, rather than a case of human-to-human transmission. This intermediate phase may be a critical stage for virus evolution and disease prevention.published_or_final_versio

    Biocompatible FeOOH-Carbon quantum dots nanocomposites for gaseousNOx removal under visible light: Improved charge separation and Highselectivity

    Development of biocompatible photocatalysts with improved charge separation and high selectivity is essential for effective removal of air pollutants. Iron-containing catalysts have attracted extensive attention due to their low-toxicity and high natural abundance. Here, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) modified FeOOH nanocomposites fabricated using a facile hydrothermal route showed enhanced NO removal efficiency (22%) compared to pure FeOOH. Moreover, generation of toxic NO2&nbsp;intermediates was significantly inhibited using the nanocomposites, demonstrating high selectivity for final nitrate formation. Photo-electrochemical results showed that both charge separation and transfer efficiency were significantly improved by CQDs addition, and the lifetime of photo-generated carriers was increased eventually. Density functional theory calculations further elucidated that the suppressed recombination of photo-induced electron-hole pairs was due to enhanced electron migration from the FeOOH to CQDs. A NO degradation mechanism was proposed based on detection of the reactive oxygen species using electron paramagnetic spectroscopy. In addition, the nanocomposite showed good biocompatibility and low cytotoxity, ensuring minimal environmental impact for potential application in large-scale.</span
