    Provision of reinforcement in concrete solids using the generalized genetic algorithm

    A generalized genetic algorithm has been developed to find the global optimal reinforcement contents for a concrete solid structure subjected to a general three-dimensional (3D) stress field. Feasible solutions were examined based on the genetic algorithm, and the heterogeneous strategy used ensures that all of the local optimal regions are searched and the most optimal reinforcement content found. The effectiveness of the proposed approach has been validated by comparing the steel contents evaluated using the present method with those obtained from other available methods. A more economic design is achieved by the proposed algorithm. The method developed provides the designer with a valuable tool for the determination of reinforcements in complicated solid concrete structures. © 2011 American Society of Civil Engineers.postprin

    Developing an EEG-based on-line closed-loop lapse detection and mitigation system

In America, 60% of adults reported that they have driven a motor vehicle while feeling drowsy, and at least 15-20% of fatal car accidents are fatigue-related. This study translates previous laboratory-oriented neurophysiological research to design, develop, and test an On-line Closed-loop Lapse Detection and Mitigation (OCLDM) System featuring a mobile wireless dry-sensor EEG headgear and a cell-phone based real-time EEG processing platform. Eleven subjects participated in an event-related lane-keeping task, in which they were instructed to manipulate a randomly deviated, fixed-speed cruising car on a 4-lane highway. This was simulated in a 1st person view with an 8-screen and 8-projector immersive virtual-reality environment. When the subjects experienced lapses or failed to respond to events during the experiment, auditory warning was delivered to rectify the performance decrements. However, the arousing auditory signals were not always effective. The EEG spectra exhibited statistically significant differences between effective and ineffective arousing signals, suggesting that EEG spectra could be used as a countermeasure of the efficacy of arousing signals. In this on-line pilot study, the proposed OCLDM System was able to continuously detect EEG signatures of fatigue, deliver arousing warning to subjects suffering momentary cognitive lapses, and assess the efficacy of the warning in near real-time to rectify cognitive lapses. The on-line testing results of the OCLDM System validated the efficacy of the arousing signals in improving subjects' response times to the subsequent lane-departure events. This study may lead to a practical on-line lapse detection and mitigation system in real-world environments

    Antigenic cross-reactivity between severe acute respiratory syndrome-associated coronavirus and human coronaviruses 229E and OC43

    Cross-reactivity between antibodies to different human coronaviruses (HCoVs) has not been systematically studied. By use of Western blot analysis, indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), antigenic cross-reactivity between severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and 2 HCoVs (229E and OC43) was demonstrated in immunized animals and human serum. In 5 of 11 and 10 of 11 patients with SARS, paired serum samples showed a ≥4-fold increase in antibody titers against HCoV-229E and HCoV-OC43, respectively, by IFA. Overall, serum samples from convalescent patients who had SARS had a 1-way cross-reactivity with the 2 known HCoVs. Antigens of SARS-CoV and HCoV-OC43 were more cross-reactive than were those of SARS-CoV and HCoV-229E. © 2005 by the Infectious Diseases Society of America.     Hydrogen peroxide treatment induced rectifying behavior of Aun-ZnO contact

    Conversion of the Aun-ZnO contact from Ohmic to rectifying with H2 O2 pretreatment was studied systematically using I-V measurements, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, positron annihilation spectroscopy, and deep level transient spectroscopy. H2 O2 treatment did not affect the carbon surface contamination or the EC -0.31 eV deep level, but it resulted in a significant decrease of the surface OH contamination and the formation of vacancy-type defects (Zn vacancy or vacancy cluster) close to the surface. The formation of a rectifying contact can be attributed to the reduced conductivity of the surface region due to the removal of OH and the formation of vacancy-type defects. © 2007 American Institute of Physics.published_or_final_versio

    Intraâ abdominal chylovenous bypass treats retroperitoneal lymphangiomatosis

    BackgroundRetroperitoneal lymphangiomatosis (RL) is a rare form of primary lymphedema featuring aberrant retroperitoneal lymphatic proliferation. It causes recurrent cellulitis, repeated interventions, and poor life quality. This study aimed to investigate proper diagnositc criteria and surgical outcomes for RL with extremity lymphedema.MethodsBetween 2012 and 2018, 44 primary lowerâ extremity lymphedema cases received lymphoscintigraphy, magnetic resonance imaging, and singleâ photon electron computed tomography to detect RL. RL patients underwent vascularized lymph node transfers (VLNT) for extremity lymphedema and intraâ abdominal sideâ toâ end chylovenous bypasses (CVB) for chylous ascites. Complications, CVB patency, and quality of life were evaluated postoperatively.ResultsSix RL patients (mean age of 30.3 years) had chylous ascites with five had lowerâ extremity lymphedema. All CVBs remained patent, though one required reâ anastomosis, giving a 100% patency rate. Four unilateral and one bilateral extremity lymphedema underwent six VLNTs with 100% flap survival. Patients reported improved quality of life (Pâ =â 0.023), decreased cellulitis incidence (Pâ =â 0.041), and improved mean lymphedema circumference (Pâ =â 0.043). All patients resumed a normal diet and activity.ConclusionsEvaluating primary lowerâ extremity lymphedema patients with MRI and SPECT could reveal a 13.6% prevalence of RL and guide treatment of refractory extremity lymphedema. The lexicographic product of two graphs GG and HH, denoted by GHG\circ H, is an important graph product.     An asymptomatic case of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) occurred early in 2004, during a community outbreak of SARS in Guangzhou, China. This was the first time that a case of asymptomatic SARS was noted in an individual with antigenemia and seroconversion. The asymptomatic case patient and the second index case patient with SARS in the 2003-2004 outbreak both worked in the same restaurant, where they served palm civets, which were found to carry SARS-associated coronaviruses. Epidemiological information and laboratory findings suggested that the findings for the patient with asymptomatic infection, together with the findings from previously reported serological analyses of handlers of wild animals and the 4 index case patients from the 2004 community outbreak, reflected a likely intermediate phase of animal-to-human transmission of infection, rather than a case of human-to-human transmission. This intermediate phase may be a critical stage for virus evolution and disease prevention.published_or_final_versio

    Wettability decay in an oil-contaminated waste-mineral mixture with dry-wet cycles

    The dependency of soil particle wettability on soil water content implies that soils subjected to drying-wetting cycles become wettable with wetting and water repellent with drying. While this has been demonstrated widely, the results are contradictory when water repellent soils are subjected to a sequence of cycles. Added to this, past wettability measurements were seldom done in batches of samples collected from the field at natural or dry water contents, with little appreciation that slight particle size variations, different drying-wetting histories and fabric (as required by different wettability measurement methods) may alter the results. This note presents soil particle wettability—soil water content relations by means of an index test following staged drying and wetting paths over a period of 8 months for an untreated, oil-contaminated anthropogenic soil (a mixture of slag, coal particles, fly ash and mineral particles) from Barry Docks (UK), a site formally used for oil storage, which is to be remediated and redeveloped for housing. The results revealed a decrease in the water repellency and increasing mineralization and bacterial activity with the wetting and drying cycles.postprin

    The NeuARt II system: a viewing tool for neuroanatomical data based on published neuroanatomical atlases

    BACKGROUND: Anatomical studies of neural circuitry describing the basic wiring diagram of the brain produce intrinsically spatial, highly complex data of great value to the neuroscience community. Published neuroanatomical atlases provide a spatial framework for these studies. We have built an informatics framework based on these atlases for the representation of neuroanatomical knowledge. This framework not only captures current methods of anatomical data acquisition and analysis, it allows these studies to be collated, compared and synthesized within a single system. RESULTS: We have developed an atlas-viewing application ('NeuARt II') in the Java language with unique functional properties. These include the ability to use copyrighted atlases as templates within which users may view, save and retrieve data-maps and annotate them with volumetric delineations. NeuARt II also permits users to view multiple levels on multiple atlases at once. Each data-map in this system is simply a stack of vector images with one image per atlas level, so any set of accurate drawings made onto a supported atlas (in vector graphics format) could be uploaded into NeuARt II. Presently the database is populated with a corpus of high-quality neuroanatomical data from the laboratory of Dr Larry Swanson (consisting 64 highly-detailed maps of PHAL tract-tracing experiments, made up of 1039 separate drawings that were published in 27 primary research publications over 17 years). Herein we take selective examples from these data to demonstrate the features of NeuArt II. Our informatics tool permits users to browse, query and compare these maps. The NeuARt II tool operates within a bioinformatics knowledge management platform (called 'NeuroScholar') either as a standalone or a plug-in application. CONCLUSION: Anatomical localization is fundamental to neuroscientific work and atlases provide an easily-understood framework that is widely used by neuroanatomists and non-neuroanatomists alike. NeuARt II, the neuroinformatics tool presented here, provides an accurate and powerful way of representing neuroanatomical data in the context of commonly-used brain atlases for visualization, comparison and analysis. Furthermore, it provides a framework that supports the delivery and manipulation of mapped data either as a standalone system or as a component in a larger knowledge management system
